The first layer was done in the same color as the canvas paint then topped with the gold paint color. The reason we did this is to cover the appearance of any gold paint bleed which would have resulted in a blurred calligraphy design.

Why didn't you use this thick gold colour first time with sponge? ?

I didn't know that sponge is for stop paint bleeding
Sponges don't absorb a lot of paint so that reduces the chance of paint bleed under the stencil and you'll end up with crisp lines. :)
