    I replaced the timing belt on a Jetta Diesel a few years ago. Once I figured out how to set the pump timing all was well. The hair I pulled out never did grow back. I should have been a Gynecologist.

    Hello.
    What do you do when after you have run the engine twice and the belt, previously centered on the sprockets (the injection pump and the camshaft), it moves to the engine side on the sprockets? (Very close to out of the injection pump sprocket)
    I have already pulled it all to the outside (opposite side), but after turning the engine it always returns to the engine side.
    Before the one that was in operation, it was perfectly centered on the sprockets.
    I noticed that the only guide is the tensioner, and apparently he is pulling the belt out of the center of the sprockets. Is the tensioner defective or did I do something wrong? (the tensioner is new and original).
    So I'm afraid to start the engine ...
    Greetings from Portugal

      If you look at the gears, you can see the old "wear marks" where the belt was sitting. It is OK if the belt is a little off of the center position (towards the engine side). As long as the belt does not go "past" the gear edge, it is OK. Yes, the only thing that is keeping the belt centered is the rails in the tensioner. If the belt walks off too far and starts to rub on something, then you have to check if the injection pump is sitting correctly (not tilted).

      @@EXOVCDS Hello,
      Thanks for your response.
      In principle I discard the injection pump, as the old belt was well positioned, the new one is almost slightly wanting to come out of the sprocket, and it is noted that it also moved in the crankshaft and camshaft, in relation to the position of the old belt .
      Has this problem never happened to you?
      Couldn't the new tensioner be "too close" to the engine?
      or could I be installing it the wrong way? but it seems like such a simple thing to do (it is new and original)
      greetings
      Rui Santos

      @@ruipaulofsantos If the pump has not been moved, then yes, the reason for the belt moving closer to the engine, is probably because of the tensioner (sitting closer to the engine). As long as the belt does not go past the teeth / edge of the cam or pump gear, then you can leave it like that. Start the engine and monitor the position of the belt. If you are not happy with the position, install the old tensioner to verify that the tensioner is the issue (if the belt sits better with the old tensioner, then use a different "new" tensioner).

    I'll have to watch this on again as I was getting a little lost abut the cam sprocket can freewheel as you're tensioning the belt. Sounds like it can still can freewheel afterwards. I must have missed something on this one....

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 років тому

      +stuzman52 Yes, it is supposed to freewheel until after the belt is tensioned... that way the camshaft does not move out of the TDC position. Once the belt is tensioned and the crank is set to TDC, the cam sprocket is tightened down and the injection pump sprocket is tightened down.

      +Thomas EXOVCDS Okay, I got you now Thomas. For some reason, I missed the part about tightening up the bolt. Duhhh, oh me! Thanks for the feedback...

    I just had my ALH in the shop for a injection pump leak I got it back and no leak but IQ was off and it had a shudder so I adjusted it in VCDS good for a weak but I noticed the pump sound like a lot of clicking and it threw a code for the quantity adjuster so I took it back with a new Bosch reman pump to have them put it on got the car back pump seems good no odd sounds but the engine sounds like lifters tapping it has never made this sound before it is back in the shop and he did not take the valve cover off for verification of top dead center because I asked him so I’m thinking my cam timing is off
    Any thoughts?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  2 роки тому

      Valve cover does not need to be removed to verify TDC... a cam lock tool is required. Cam & pump gears need to be free to move when adjusting belt tension (at the same time, cam & pump are locked into position so they can not move). Take the vehicle to someone who has all the tools and is familiar with the engine.

    Hi! Did you tension the belt without the top roller installed? Thanks

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 років тому

      Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

    • @britishgurl13
      @britishgurl13 7 років тому

      Does it make a difference? The belt will be a little more tensioned once the roller is put on. If you tension without the roller, do you rotate the engine before installing the roller? Have done this job several times and each has been successful, but always trying to learn. Thanks!

    Hey Thomas, I have a 2002 tdi alh engine with idle problem, the idle should be round but some times (1/2 of the time) it freaks out (like irregular idle) but the arrow doesn't move.
    I shorted the hose from the fuel pump and it's a little better and shorting the hose helped for a better start ( when i leaved the car in the garaje 5-10°c for more than 2 days i couldn't started it only while moving (i know it's not good for car).
    I specify that when irregular idle happens it shakes the car too.
    The battery have 4-5 months.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 років тому

      +Andrei Bolojan Could be an injection pump problem (irregular idle)... the hard starting could be related (fuel drains back).

    • @andreibolojan1039
      @andreibolojan1039 8 років тому

      +Thomas EXOVCDS can an old fuel filter cause the idle problem?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 років тому

      +Andrei Bolojan I don't think so... but since it is old, might as well change it to see if it makes a difference.

      Did you use the cam & injection pump lock tools? Did you leave the cam sprocket & injection pump sprocket loose when tensioning the belt? After tensioning the belt & tightening the cam & pump sprockets... did you turn the engine 2 turns and check that the lock tools fit again? Did you check / adjust pump timing at 80c?

    It is ok if tensioner is little bit over two marks or on higher mark?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому +1

      Too tight is not good... a little is ok (the belt will stretch / relax), but if you can get it to where it should be, then that's best.

      @@EXOVCDS today i repeat procedure with tensioner. I took it between two marks. After 20km it is ower again.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому +1

      Send me a picture... I need to see where the marks are at. Otherwise... like I said, give it some time to settle, it may very well start to move back to the normal position.

    • @3jasom
      @3jasom 5 років тому +1

      @@EXOVCDS i solved this problem today:D marks on tensioner is not always on one line because tension in timing belt depend on compression in cylinders. Tension in belt increase with compresion pressure together and this change marks positions on tensioner pully. Marks on tensioner is on one line only if first piston is in TDC. Thanks you for willingness! Good luck!

      It's a snap-on one... will have to get back to you on that. I believe there are cheaper units available (does not come with compressor, which I'm sure you know).

      Air Lift is a viable option, I use one constantly with now issues. The one perk to snap on tool that is used in the video, you do not have to disconnect any hoses when switching from evacuation to fill. Part # of my Air Lift system is 550000 and is made by UView. If you set on Snap on products the part is RADKITPLUSA on my receipt. Hope that info helps if you're thinking of purchasing.
