    In terms of species, modern humans are Homo Sapiens Sapiens and Neanderthals were Homo Sapiens Neandethaliensis, so we were basically just different subspecies of the same species, kind of like wolves and dogs. Most people with ancestors from outside of Sub-Saharan Africa have some Neanderthal DNA, and depending on where you come from, you could also have up to 6% DNA from another species of human called Denisovans. Especially Aboriginal Australians and Melanesians. Fun fact: The first Denisovans that were found all had around 17% Neanderthal DNA themselves and an additional 4% from some unknown other species of human. Additionally, they all lived alongside other species of human, like Homo Erectus, who was the first species of human to venture out of Africa and was pretty ancient at this point, and also Homo Floriensis, who were tiny, island-welling humans. So, yeah, what it means to be human has certainly changed a lot. If I had a time machine, one of the first things I would do is to go back to that time, to see how different subspecies of humans interacted with each other.

    Are you talking at the end about QI presenter Sandi Toksvig, the legend that is the "Togs". She's Danish/American and it took years to coax her into the cage and tame her into the HUGE character she is today (a stature joke). We are keeping her as payment for Denmark inflicting on the UK, Vikings, The Dane law, Lego and Carlsberg beer among very few other things.

    Neanderthals (and Denisovans) were (as far as we can tell) never very numerous, and tended to live in smaller groups more widely separated than did the more recent immigrants from Africa (i.e. us). It may be that in large part they simply re-merged into what became the much larger Sapiens population.

    British tv presenter Alan Titchmarsh was made up as a neanderthal for a documentary series, The British Isles, A Natural History. He got a few glances when he walked down the street, but not much more than that. It was cleverly done.

    The big question is how did humans as we are now evolve so quickly. Like Nick said, ancient humanoids were around for a vastly longer time period than we have. As far as I know no one can explain how a complex species such as us can have evolved so much in such a short space of time. And not all of us have evolved at the same speed, some of us are building spacecraft while others are living in grass huts and hunting with spears.

    • @terryhunt2659
      @terryhunt2659 2 дні тому

      That's all a matter of learned culture and the snowballing of knowledge, not physical evolution.
      Someone (I think David Attenborough)in the 1960's said something to the effect that, "In New Guinea, the grandsons of stone-age head-hunting cannibals are piloting airliners."

    QI is THE best programme. Quick wit and some interesting facts. I think they are up to letter T - SandiToksvig is the host and is as smart and quick witted as Stephen Fry. The format is aways the same, the comedians have changed over the years except for Alan Davis who keeps it rollling and provides lunacy if nothing else is coming.

    This is a very recent discovery. In 2009 Alice Robert's documentary series ,"The Incredible Human Journey" episode 3, she said so far no Neanderthal DNA has been found in humans. But subsequently I saw the headlines about the mixing. The series is about humans leaving Africa and spreading around the world. Only on daily motion now ;)

    What is the brain classified as?
    The brain is an organ, and a very unusual and complex one at that. It plays a role in every one of our functions, controlling many organs, our thoughts, memory, speech, and movements.
    The skin is the largest organ of the body. The skin and its derivatives (hair, nails, sweat and oil glands) make up the integumentary system. One of the main functions of the skin is protection.2 Nov 2023
