i feel great to have one of these boomboxes. ever seen a 17 year old with a ghettoblaster? probably not. lol i've taken it to my school, where i got hella attention with this new era. i wish this stuff would come back.
uhh, yes. I was 10 and walking around with a jam box, one of the first, they made a big thing of it saying "Stereo" up front and center on the box. Stereo was a big deal in a portable.
One of the boxes shown - the one witb three speakers across the front and the tape deck at the top left is a Panasonic 8443. I've had one for a coyple decades now. Every once in a while i threaten my kids I'm going to walk around the neighborhood with it on my shoulder.
That's one of the first ones I ever got, sadly I bought it needing some repairs and just never got around to it again as I bought too many bigger ones to play with ;)
Look, I have been telling you people, these are not boomboxes in the video. Y'all be calling a jam box, a boombox. No one before 1985 were calling those boomboxes, they were a radio, or a stereo, or a jam box. The big ones at some point were called ghettoblasters. It wasn't until they were making them shorter and deeper with CD players, not so tall and flat, that they even came up with the term boombox, why? because the extra depth gave the speakers more room to boom. The tall and flat ones are a friggin jam box alight? I was there, with my 1979 JCPenney jam box, a couple years later getting outclassed by my cousin's Hitachi Jam box, MTV, Monday night at the raps, Whodini, Run DMC, no one ever thought to call it a boombox.
ok,thad right. Got my own aiwa cs 440 jambox at 1981. In Finland. Sold that to my neighbours few years later. Still there at their yard barn. These rare jamboxes are coming back, love it!!
I got my self a sweet 1986 Mag the one in the vid with the 2 large and 1 med in the center. Its like the second or 3d that flashes on the screen. I use it in my shop when I work on cars and bikes. OH the bass. And it works great and with the L/R input jacks i can use my smartphone mp3s. But mp3 sound quality sucks out of it. Need to switch to a hirez digital autio quality for the best out the box experience.
Last week, I brought my JVC M90 at downtown to blast music and take pictures. When I was in a Starbucks just getting coffee while the boombox was powered off, you have no idea how many looks and stares I got from the customers. It's kinda funny to me because they were staring at it and some were asking me questions as compared to someone that has a muscle car or an exotic car. It's nice to put smiles on people's faces and make their day.
Hence why I've had my M90 and few other big dawgs out in the back seat of my 75 Olds Delta 88 convertible at the neighborhood car show. Some people enjoy the boxes more than the car. And honestly I'm more nervous about people messing with the radios moreso than I am my car ;)
@@m40dot so you keep your big boomboxes in your car and leave them in there? Isn't that really risky though? Yeah I totally agree with you, there are others that love boomboxes much more than cars. I guess its because you dont see boomboxes everyday just like how you see cars everyday.
@@ajrg91 Well the car show is our neighborhood one across the street from my house that I actually run. So I park my car and have went back and grabbed some of the big boxes to pair with my big car. M90, Sharp vz2000 and Conion C100 are the good triple threat that I've had in the front and back seats, or out front on ground in front of the front bumper of the car.
@@m40dot I see, so its pretty safe there I assume, and you got the C 100, wow. The vz 2000 seems more affordable than the other 2. Idk which is better between the M90 and the C100 cause they are both labeled "King of Boombox."
@@ajrg91 I think I have about 6 of the C100 variants right now, including the Gold C100 which is the only one of them upstairs as it's of course the best spec. i used to have that big conion c 100f ghetto blaster back in '84. paid only $250 wholesale price. i bought it off a box truck selling ghetto blasters parked along side busch blvd. in tampa florida. the guy had all kinds small and large ghetto blasters on display outside and inside his truck and i wanted to buy the biggest one.
Nice. I didn't have them till longer after. I think I have 5 C100s right now, and the Canadian Clairtone version of it as well. And another 45 or so others that lean to the bigger ones like it seemed like wanted in 84. Sharp VZ2000 w the vertical turntable is maybe the tallest and heaviest.
Great vid! Today's Bluetooth speakers have NOTHING over an 80's boombox. No style, no flashing lights, can't be heard for blocks, and limited media options. Just a bunch of boomy bass, if that.
I really love boomboxes and I got my own collection thanks to you guys in the boomboxery community. The only thing I dislike about these old ghettoblasters is once you put the volume very loud starting at the halfway point, the sound gets very piercing and kinda hurts your ears a bit.
@@ajrg91 Yeah that's because most of their sound is midrange, like guitar and voice. You can't leave the bass maxed when you raise the volume, so you have to live with a bunch of midrange sound instead.
