    Written by unsung, legendary blue-eyed soul man Jim Ford. Sly Stone once called Jim "the baddest white man on the planet." He should have been a massive, massive star. Try reacting to "I'm Gonna Make Her Love Me" or "It's My Life." The man lived with Bobbie Gentry before she became a star and it reflected badly on him that he tried to take partial credit for the song, "Ode to Billie Joe." But, he really was a great singer-songwriter in his own right. But drugs pretty much destroyed him.

    • @randymccloud5743
      @randymccloud5743 9 місяців тому

      Drugs did not "destroy" Bobby Womack. That is a very false narrative. Bobby recorded, and toured right up until the time he became too sick to do so. He died at home, at the age of 70 suffering from cancer...diabeties...Alzheimer's, as well as other non-drug related health issues. He stopped using drugs in the late eighties. He was very candid about his heavy drug use in the 60's, 70's and wrote about it in his memoir. He had a long, and very successful career before....and after his drug use stopped.

    Background and Inspiration:
    The song was loosely based on Bobby’s brother’s carefree behavior. It was originally recorded as a funny tribute to his brother, bass guitarist Harry Womack.
    Harry lived a carefree life and often expressed a desire to live on an Indian reservation. The song playfully captured this aspect of his personality.
    Tragically, Harry Womack was killed by his girlfriend during a fight in 1974. The song’s tone shifted from lighthearted to poignant after this devastating event.

    Bobby comes from a talented family. He and his older brothers formed a group called the Womack Brothers when Bobby was only 10 years old that featured his mother on organ and his father on guitar., who performed mostly gospel songs. Bobby married Sam Cooke's widow only three months after his murder. His youngest brother Cecil married Sam Cooke's daughter and sang as a duet Womack and Womack. Cecil co-wrote the song T.K.O. in which Teddy Pendergrass turned into a number 2 hit on the Billboard R&B charts, renamed Love T.K.O.. You should give a listen to Womack and Womack. T.K.O. and Starbright are a couple of my favorites.

    Bobby released a country album in the 1970s. But other than Charley Pride (& Ray Charles to a lesser extent), until recent years other Black singers had a hard time breaking into country music. Not a singer, but harmonica player DeFord Bailey did perform at the Opry early on starting in the 1920s. Bailey didn't make that many recordings though.

    Bobby was amazing! If you like him, listen to Ali Woodson, former lead singer of the Temptations. Their song, Treat Her Like A Lady, is a song that you guys, especially Amber, will love!
