We need a MG L-Gaim, Mamoru Nagano was the first to draw a functional Inner frame, without his contributuon, mechas would be filled with nonsense stuff and giant springs like the early drawings of the Gundam inner parts, Nagano created the Internal skeleton idea, it would be nice if the L-Gaim mk1 got a master grade, at least the Mk2 got a R3 kit
I’ve seen 2 Metal Armor Dragonar 4 packs where you get four 1/144 kits for about $50 dollars U.S. and I’ve also seen 2 other kits from another one of those series that comes with 4 kits each as well. I’ve also seen P-Bandai do Aura Battler Dunbine kits as new releases in the last decade or so. And I think I’ve seen a newer version of L-Gaim that was also released in recent years. So I think that Bandai is trying to make these series more popular at least with the model kits.
Love the historical context here! I definitely need to go searching for some of those series, I've already watched all the Gundam media from the 80s so I'd really love to scratch that itch. Great video!
In my experience, the Layzner kits are the toughest to find (though there's a nice modern Real Robot Revolution kit of it). If you watch any of the animation, Layzner is also the way to go -- half way through, they just give up on sci-fi things and turn into Fist of the North Star...

Hey! Been a viewer for a good few months but haven't commented before. I picked this video because it's still one of my favorite that you've put out! I really appreciate this retrospective of Bandai's model kit history and seeing how the design and techniques developed and carried forward to the modern day. It's a perspective that's not common with other gunpla reviewers who just tend to default to old = no merit/value. Your format is very informative and it really helps me appreciate just how well-designed and engineered kits are these days now that I have a better grasp of Bandai's design decisions from the past thanks to videos like this one. I have an original L-Gaim Auge model. I built it in high school and painted it to match my 40K Eldar army. I will be stripping it and rebuilding it to match the show I think. I was at the big Hobby Town in our area (October 2023) and saw Xabungle kits on the shelves. I may have to go back for a couple.

Very good retrospective. It's amazing how Gundam launched this sub genre of SF modeling and how it exploded with all the companies doing it. Yet Bandai didn't rest on their laurels and continued to push the envelope.
Bandai really learned so much with these shows. Although they weren’t a huge success, when Zeta hit the airwaves they had a whole host of technologies that catapulted them where they are today.

The staff basically gave up half way and then the show became all Fist of the North Star. It's so insane and amazing at the same time, like it was a different show
much surprised that the xabungle line is amazing by today's standards, even the 1/144s have excellent panel / rivet details, along with gun turrets, pitons and cockpits. only downside (of the product line) is that it's not yet snap-built despite having pegs which were probably used for alignment at the time on a different note, I was half-hoping to see a ~monthly post, didn't quite expect a total hiatus

Always love toys history. Also, it's interesting that sometime Bandai will upgrade the sculpting of old kits but also a shame that the original sculpt would be unobtainable.

Wow, Vifam kits really aren't re-printed too often (no reprints since the mid-90s I believe) so that's a bit of a rare kit. You made the right call to pick both kits up whenever you did. I wanted to get a kit from each series for the video but even in Hong Kong, there are limits to the sort of old stuff I can dig up :') Very glad you enjoyed the video, I love making everything in the Feature series!

It's been about a year and they haven't all sold yet so I might have to go get some more now... The 1/144th Round Vernian w/ Sling Pannier I got is dated 2006 on the box. It has a little hole punched info card inside and an ad for some kind of PS2 game.

Either Patlabor and Cyber Formula are so rich in their own histories, I think Cyber Formula is less documented in English circles. I'll definetly do more of these sorts of videos now that I know I can do them 😂 I went into this not even knowing if this would even come together at all
Patlabor first OVA was released in 1988, and the movie which came a year afterwards was a big hit. I remember Bandai released some of the best model kits (no glue required) in those days, and I still have them. The opening soundtrack was so cool. Kawai Kenji wrote the music for Patlabor; you may recognize his name from Ghost in the Shell, Ip Man, and many others. Bandai did not make GPX Cyber Formula model kits. It was Aoshima. The kits are mostly molded in single color, so you need some painting skills.
Wow I love this video!! I bought the L Gaim 1/144 four pack over the summer and thought those designs were so much fun. I knew about Xabungle and Dunbine, but I'd never heard of these three other lines. Time for me to look for all of these on ebay!
Very glad you found your way to this video:) The Vifam and Layzner kits are surprisingly reprinted quite a lot. I've even seen some Vifam kits in the background of Canadian Gundam's warehouse.
So Gundam wouldn't be what we know it as if it wasn't for these other Mecha series? Hopefully we get new kits of Dragonar since they are essentially gundam's with a different name.
Bandai really wants to branch out beyond Gundam, and each time they try some new gimmick that ends up added back into Gundam kits I actually would love an HG Dragonar... or Layzner... or heck, even Xabungle.
P-Bandai has been putting out some new kits from Aura Battler Dunbine in recent years. Have you seen any of them before? About 15 years ago I also saw some of the older models and the details were pretty amazing.
It looks like you could _kind of_ approximate that rough patterned plastic with a low grit sandpaper? Especially if it's painted over afterward. Still a pain, no doubt, but modelers back then wouldn't have been totally screwed.

You're absolutely right that Code Geass was an amazing success -- though a bit different from what Bandai wanted. The CD sales and product sales were through the roof, but for models it didn't make much of a splash. They found much more success much later with high-end figures but the poor thing still lives under the shadow of the immovable salea titan that's Gundam Kyoukai Senki is their next attempt -- maybe 9th? 10th? time is the charm
Lei time to tell, hope kyoukai seki have good writing story. If have really good story like Code geass, probably will the fourth . I forgot name of the series but in 2013 if i remember sunrise make another attempt to make another real mecha genre but not biggest success like code geass
It is your opinion. But for those who grew up in the 80s would strongly disagree with you. SPT Layzner indeed has strange story line mixed with characters as if cross-over with Fist of the North Star. However, the mecha designs have influenced anime such as Votoms, Gasaraki, and even Eureka Seven. Takahashi Ryosuke is behind all these creations.
Votoms came before Layzner, though I get what you mean. I absolutely agree Mr. Takahashi is what wins a lot of fans over in all his works, though I think he's the director. Just his work for the opening of Layzner is already legendary. Kunio Okawara should be the mecha designer for Layzner. He also did Votoms a few years before too

The role of 監督, which is a combination of director and producer, has full responsibility and vision of everything. The distinctive smaller scale "meka" design (rather than big robot like gundam) came from Takahashi san because he wanted realism. When I was a kid, I loved SPT Layzner, Panzer World Gallient and Dougram, which were all produced and directed by Takahashi san.
L-Gaim's products probably sold the best of all the six Sunrise + Bandai works in the 80's, I think I did mention the series as an icon of real robots, maybe it didn't come out clearly. Mr. Nagano definitely made his name with L-Gaim. Bandai keeps trying to sell L-Gaim products but they never seem to sell enough to continue for long (e.g. try tried with High Complete Model, High Grade, R3)

the robots from the Xabungle series reminded me of many of the designs in Battletech, an American real robot franchise

I disagree. Heavy Metal LGaim was the best in those days which gave fame to Mamoru Nagano who developed Five Star Stories
