When my first marriage was falling apart and we were all about to move I was in a parking lot with my oldest daughter in the car and this came on the radio. I put her on my lap and sang those last verses to her. I cried then and I'm crying now typing this. Bruce's songs speak to real life, real people, and the very real pain so many of us experience.

I feel you. I've done all three of my boys like that. I worked 3rd shift in the textile mill for 19 years across a railroad track. We still have a wonderful small town, but if we don't get a republican in we all gonna be under Communist leadership.

Americans, you should be proud of this man. There is the real spirit of your country and culture in his lyrics, but his songs are understandable for the people all over the world. He's your national bard, not only a singer. Greetings from Poland!

@ric Gikonyo this is a result of the Cold War. Russian and Chinese subversion tactics are being used to destabilise and weaken the West. Its sort of like releasing a biological weapon that only began showing symptoms years later.

WOW. You see this song in your head. Bruce Springsteen was doing concept albums before it was heard of. The man is a national treasure. I hope he never passes away.

Love this song for sure. But, to be clear Pink Floyd AND many other psychedelic bands were doing 'concept' albums at least a decade before Bruce. He didn't create it.

I'm 55 years old, and child of working class family. But all that doesn't matter. Everyone can see a part of his own life in the stories that Bruce tells in his songs. It makes me calm in hard times. He's like a friend who is always there.

I remember Bruce told a story before he sang this song, it was about his Dad going to work, to make money to buy A turkey for Thanksgiving, then to buy Christmas gifts, then Shoes for school, My Dad a Union Electrician lived this life, I remember wondering why My Dad had to get up and go to work on Freezing Cold days in Buffalo NY, and I cold stay in my warm bed, Dad was working class, Salt of the Earth, and could fix anything, RIP DAD, See you on the other side.

My dad signed a 20 year contract (as a 15 year old) to join the US Navy during WWII as a Filipino National...limited to choice of jobs and max ceiling rank of E-6...sworn to secrecy during Bikini Island nuclear testing, he still has keloid scars that seem to have NEVER healed. He refused to seek a VA disability for injuries that he could not speak nor write about. A year ago, he got his 1st helicopter ride...a life flight to Sarasota Memorial for an fall...doctors there also thought he suffered a mild heart attack...shut everyone up including my sister the nurse (she knows everything, just ask her) by walking TWICE around the entire ward floor instead of down the hall & back...he is still tough as nails !

Really? I remember him saying,"I was twelve going on thirteen first time I saw a dead human being. It happened in the summer of nineteen-fifty-nine. Bruce is a legend. And this song is the one that hits me the most. I was a kid in the early 80s in the Quad Cities when the farm crisis hit the agricultural machine manufacturers like John Deere. Thousands laid off. I remember the downtown stores shutting their doors. Just like Bruce writes in his song. Thank you, Bruce, for being the voice of a generation.

Same man. My Dad worked for John Deere in Ottumwa at that time. I remember sitting on his lap steering the wheel in this old Ford flatbed saying, get an education son. The factory jobs like mine won't be around when you're my age. my Grandfather died walking out of that factory. My father died of cancer from the chemicals talking about going back to the factory when he got better, knowing damn well he wouldn't. In a way it's sad, but there is something said for that type of dedication. Not only my Dad and Grandpa, but my Great-grand father, Grandmother, and two of my uncles dedicated their lives to that place.
Even at 4 and 5 years old I remember everyone so worried about losing their farms and jobs, and on top of that the droughts and tornados were so bad during that time southeast Iowa was a mess.

This man didn't just write songs, he wrote social, cultural, geopolitical and political history in verses from people's view, not historians' disconnected from reality. Unlike today's music, his lyrics can be studied to get an insight into our history, collective/individual sentiments, struggles....

Just compare the lyrics of this song to the lyrics of more recent d songs like WAP.
There is simply no comparison. Bruce told stories about society, culture, and politics. What does WAP say ? Not a f’ing thing.

thanks you all. I arrived on the 13th of August. we have two mandatory weeks of quarantine at my folks house. my dad has been in the hospital, got out for the weekend, and is going back in on Monday morning for a minor surgery.
but it was something else to get 'home' and hug my parents for the first time in 10 years. my daughter is so happy to be here, she saw her first deer yesterday.
mom is frazzled. I'm trying to do what I can to help. dad's health is bad. I'm not sure if he does get better, the Dr's say he won't and that the key is for him to not get worse.
thanks for your well wishes. it means alot :3

In the mid eighties my Dad/Foster Dad, my big brother and I were waiting for the truck to arrive and we had this album playing while Dad was reading his Louis Lamour book and to our surprise he put his book down and as this song was playing he got a year in his eyes. We were aligned across the warehouse door with Dad in the middle and when the song finished,
    " This is your hometown"
That's when this song became my favorite song after that and when I play this song it brings me back to Bella Coola. If you ever get up to Bella Coola you'll see why. And I now can only picture my Dad and brother now as they both got to go home to Creator.

During Covid 19 I still work, from home, but as a friend of mine in Brazil wrote we've all fallen down the rabbit hole. I rediscovered music I took for granted when young -- a bunch of friends in March 2020 began sharing inspiring videos music books films; there well may be a second wave but the lesson
I learned was look out for your fellow man. Lost contact with my only living relative a sister entirely my fault; can't change it, just do my best by everyone else. I find the sheer power of this 3rd album of Springsteen (Kennedy Center Honors don't miss Jon Stewart and Sting!) a huge boost; also My Back Pages live Harrison, Clapton Neil Young Dylan Tom Petty missed some people -- collaboration unique, and so on...

I've never left my hometown. Born and raised in a town with under 20k population. I married my high school sweetheart, sent her through college and, together, we've raised our family and built a successful small business. We've seen many others leave, only to return a few years later. Don't get me wrong, I've been to every major city in the United States and I'm sure that they can be great places to live. Personally, I wouldn't want to live anywhere other than my hometown.

My dad worked as a stock person for the A&P during the Great Depression. He was allowed to bring home almost spoiled food from work and he made enough money to keep the lights on and to pay tuition for night School at Newark College of Engineering. He kept his mom, dad, and brother off of public support, and in 5 years he graduated as an electrical engineer. What a great father figure...his example motivated me to work three jobs to make sure my kids would graduate without college debt. They both played soccer for Towson and now they too are making the sacrifices necessary to properly provide for children. Sadly, no matter how hard they work the costs of raising a family rise faster than salaries. Ironically, the people who work three jobs don't get the deductions for college expenses as it is income-qualified. The world Bruce champions honors independence, hard work, sacrifice, and a true moral compass. Sadly, my grandchildren will have to find their way through a very different world. We are a divided nation that just can't abide by the new commandment Jesus gave us the night they took him ... "love your neighbor as I have loved you." Through his lyrics, Bruce reminds us of the human struggles that define our lives, and through Grace, we find our way.

STRATMAN firdaus I could not agree with you more. In fact Knopfler4 is my absolute favorite. There are may be 2 handfuls of truly brilliant songwriters and these 2 gentlemen are at the top. And Knopfler is a genius with the guitar. He has his own unique style and sound. He plays from the bottom of his soul. Flying fingers and a lot of sound don't always a genius guitarist make. He moves me miles with his music.

MissDistarr60 Spot on. Music and guitar playing is not a sport, as most seem to propagate by stating oh! such and such is better because he plays "fast" or is more "technical" etc.
To me its all about how much passion and true feeling one can release through the instrument and the music. Mark Knopfler who is not only gifted with tremendous virtuosity but at the core of his playing and music is pure soul, passion, blood, sweat and tears. Thereby it hits the depths of your soul when you listen to his genius. Sorry to ramble on...

Beautifully done - and closed. Usually when a song ends on a fade-out on a record, it's because the artist hasn't figured out how to close it. Bruce Springsteen did a good job - and made the live version just as powerful as the recorded version.
Like Lyle Lovett says, the best ones last. And this song will. Thirty-five years later and it still resonates in the heart.

    A tear to the eye.
"Foreman says these jobs, are going boys, and they ain't coming back..."
Just think of what we've squandered for our sons and daughters. Left with nothing but a bunch of glowing screens for everyone to stare into.
Sitting your son on your lap in a car nowadays will result in men with guns taking him from you. We've done a grave injustice to our fathers, and to our children. Some days I can't believe the things I have to say to my son to try and help him understand this world.

    • @SelfReflective
      @SelfReflective 8 років тому +27

The song was written in 1984. I can't understand this, those were supposedly the good old times, Reagan was reelected with 60%, it was morning in America, and yet this song was written then. How can you like this song and then, I'm guessing, but my guess will be right, be 100% percent the political agenda of those years?? This is cognitive dissonance, it is simply nostalgia, pining for the days of our youth, when things were simpler, for us, not for our parents. When we were carefree and young and everything seemed possible. Why not accept that, instead of constructing this Utopia in the past that was never real? The young of today will create a world of their own design. They have access to knowledge and skills that was miles beyond our reach. Let us not sink into depression and self-pity because we have grown old and realized our mortality. It was good to be young once, then. It is good to be young today. The world will go on.

no 1984 was a patch up job of the real good ol times... they got a couple of military contracts but once those dried up they really took everything ... where I live now there was a shirt factory that my wife's mom and dad and extended family worked at ... the guy that owned it pulled everything up took their pensions and everything ... that was around 2000 ..

Feel sorry for U cause you could not read the actual policies of a republican governement which are very much like the neoliberal policies in Latin America, We are now having a government who rules for the 5% of the society and rest of population cannot afford utilities, food and rent. Welcome to the real world.

This ballad brings the "Deer Hunter" images to my mind and a lump to my throat every time I listen to it. The two were several years apart. Maybe it was because they were both germinated in the same melancholic era of my youth that's dwindled in the rearview of my memory lane.

When I Was a 9yo Boy In 1965, My Dad Would Let Me Sit On His Lap While Driving Down The Street In His Chrysler Newport In Our Hometown.

Exactly. And, neither will they get the feeling of the soul of a small town! (If they're from one) The town I grew up in went through a major recession, with the closing of the only work it offered. Then, what was left of it; Walmart went in & ruined independent shops on Main Street!
