Pfff . . . those star fruits are far from being ripe. Star fruit will turn orange, then it will turn red, but only if it is still on the tree. Star fruit is like plums. When it is ripe, it is really sweet. The stuff you seen in grocery stores are far from being ripe because you can't harvest fruit when its ripe. It would go bad before it reached the store, but the green fruit will not fully ripen. We had star fruit trees growing up.

I was in Jamaica in March, 2016 and had star fruit for the first time. It was tangy, sour, sweet all at the same time and the yellow ones were too, lol. But did enjoy them.

So the ones that are not quite ripe, can they be ripened at room temperature afterwards or not please? Found them in the store refrigerated and they are not quite yellow enough. Thanks!

Growing starfruit here in Gainesville, Florida. Have the tree up near a southern wall. Surrounded by a Barbados cherry tree and a mango tree, so wegll protected from the cold that occasionally comes through.g Just picked three large ones today, with blossoms for others still covering the tree.

Hi.... Mr. James, carambola can actually be eaten when it's green i do it when I was still kid here in the Philippines. And its not toxic as you ask, however it would taste like sour so a salt is a perfect partner for it.

Exactly. We have plenty of carambola in Brazil specially in south Bahia, I used to drink gallons of the juice everyday during the carambola high season in the summer, very refreshing and full of vitamins. It's juicy and sweet when ripe close to the grape texture. We also make what we call "compota" it's a carambola preserve, it become sweet and sour and the carambola turn black and wrinkled like a raisin. I miss that fruit :(**

He should trim the edges off the points. Even though it all edible, the points tend to be a little on the over tart side. Just slightly trimming those edges can make it taste a lot better.
