This kid is going to remember all of these tips that he's learning from the ol' man in this project and hopefully will serve him later on down the road. Its great to see knowledge and wisdom being passed down from older generations to the new.
Such a rebuild expert ! Can never under-appreciate mechanics like this man. Thanks for shareing your genuine HD expertise/ teardown video. 77' Ironhead owner
I just got passed down a 77 and im 22 years old...i love working on bikes, but the more i watch this, the more I feel like Im in over my head 😅 and tho im younger ive been tinkering on cars and bikes for several years. This motor is just so wild. Either way ill never get rid of it since it was passed down but im sure this will be a difficult build. Been sitting outside near lake elsinore for 14 years. Only 8k original miles tho-bike is complete. I wonder how much shit im gonna have to go through to get it purring again.
@@xander4301 too much information at once will overwhelm you, don't look at it as a whole , break it down into each individual system, you'll be surprised at how much you'll be able to do just take your time, you got this. 😎✌✊
this guy is really cool for helping these kids out, these motors are litterally going to be better than the day they rolled of the assembly line. Easily the best ironhead mechanic ive ever seen on here and i just spent a year rebuilding a 1960 XLH chopper. Kids fucking sandles gotta go though
Tatro.. I love these videos. I have a 79 xlh which has been abused for many years and I doubt I even have the knowledge of your young padawan. Thankfully, as does your friend, I also have a yoda-like figure who stands above me with an air of a slightly annoyed, slightly amused schoolteacher. More ironhead videos please!
I would not be t too surprised, if all the gears are damaged cuz he keeps throwing every thing to the concrete floor. Now I understand why he likes to work on the ground.... Iwas only waiting for the motor to drop... lol
The 68 I had was a XL kick and electric start. It was also a 900cc I wouldn't mind a 1000cc either but I just want a basic stripped down bike running good and reliable but not much to it!!!
Tatro, I appreciate the work you do. I am currently tearing a 75' down and wanted to know if you would share your process of tanking the bottom end? You mentioned solvent and everything looks great after coming out. Will hot tanking destroy the gasket where bottom end halves meet? Just trying to get an idea of my options as my crank and rod bearings are nice and tight but quite a bit of sludge built up from sitting so long.
mine was in many pieces. Scattered all over the place in the big shop. It was fun learning how it works and how it went together. I did have help from a friend that owned the body shop.
Hey man, I enjoy your videos and hope you keep them coming! I’m currently rebuilding the charging system and ran into a problem installing new clutch basket and was wondering if you could help?? I know your very busy but If you could take few min to reply would be awesome! My 85 sportster xlx1000 is new to me but has been rebuilt!
Thank you for responding, the problem I’m having is when I got bike the charging system wasn’t charging so I chased is back to the stator and clutch basket! The magnets were completely dust packed in around and behind stator so I got new stator and clutch basket with new magnets! I hate that design! I tried to get the new style basket with magnets incased in the basket! But they were back ordered! Anyway when I slide the new basket on shaft it don’t slide on far enough to get my spacer washer on shaft! I can only get locking clip on! There’s a small build out below that shaft On the front plate of transmission gears and my magnets are rubbing that!! I can see wear marks from the old basket on that build out! It’s like 5/8 inch round and sticks out like a half inch? Does that hold one of the shafts inside that the gears ride on? Anyway any advise is greatly appreciated! And if you tell me how to fix it I will wire you $100 on my word! I hope you don’t think I’m an idiot lol… I can’t find anyone here in Maine that knows a thing about ironhead motors! The dealers don’t lol! I tried to buy a pressure plate tool at LA Harley in Lewiston, maine. and the guy says I don’t think we even have one in the shop!!! I’m like really you don’t do clutch work here lol… anyway I’m Neil and appreciate your time! I hope you understood any of that????
it is best to contact me by email for more detailed help on your project. aftermarket parts don't fit correctly lots of times and dealing with it is just part of the job. i would need pictures to see what you think you are hitting against. start by checking how every part fits together with each other and than move on to the assembly. tatro
Just to let you know x.l.h Harleys if they sit for a long time they will stop charging they have to be polarized again then they will charge again it very simple to do
You need to get the special tool.to.put the clutch back.to.gether the 2 fingers go behind the clutch basket then you turn thr main bolt in to hold presure in the Center of the clutch without this tool you won't be able to reassemble it clutch with.out it i have tried .imposable your hands have to be free to start starting the nuts
I have a question. I have a 2010 Heritage 96 with stock compensator. It needs to be replaced due to bad design by HD. Imagine that. The engine has a nice set of cams and runs pretty strong. Would you upgrade to Screaming Eagle as HD sells or go with a Baker? Some say Baker is the way to go. You think it is better than SE?
Hey Tatro. How did you get that SHAFT EXTENSION compension sprocket. 40377-74 off. I really like to know, i have one on my sportster 73. Henrik Elholm (Denmark)
if it doesn't come off it isn't going to come off. there is no tool to pull it off. i press them off when i press the crank out of the cases on the rebuild. tatro
Tattoo I have a 1972 Electra Glide with a stock Shovel head in it it’s got 39,000 miles on the odometer. It’s bent both exhaust valve rods at different times both times when it was idling and the it backfired and quit tuning an old school shop told me the top end needs rebuilt it ran like a top until the valves bent what would you look at to fix this problem. I appreciate your help on in Disabilty so I’m not rich.
who cares, just take it apart and see what is wrong. i would guess a loose valve seat, guide or the valves are hitting each other. fix it now or fix it later. tatro
All that scratchin business on the inside...could it possibly have been from not enough oil changes or too many miles between? or maybe from no oil filter in the system? I had a 66 Sporty myself bout 30 yrs back & it didn't have an oil filter on it.
This kid is going to remember all of these tips that he's learning from the ol' man in this project and hopefully will serve him later on down the road. Its great to see knowledge and wisdom being passed down from older generations to the new.
that goes for the old farts too. its never too late to learn.

Where can I find a tool to get that spring off like yours or similar and is it necessary to pull that spring to get the assembly off? Thanks
Borrow one off a friend who rides harley then make one pretty simple
Shower shoes, perfect machine shop foot wear.
i got a 72 never felt the need to take it apart..she runs and runs

I Had a 1975 XLCH Sportster and the only thing was it blew teeth off the idler gear twice, but that was it no more problems.

no gasket, just sealer on the case halfs. take it apart all the way and reseal it. no leaks or a leaky pig, your choice.

i don't have anything here to show you what to do. the clutch is the same as the 4-speed evo bikes.

tucker's bike master brand sell a solid motor sprocket that eliminates all the oem crap.

How do I contact you to ask questions?
phone, email or stop by.

its in the videos.
tatro
The Shaft Extension is left om the shaft (sprocket shaft), how did you pull it off. Thanks.
1000 Ironhead, 1 video back, homemade tool.
I have this tool no problems at all, it's the last one. it is the last part, I'm trying to explain, the shaft extension there is left.
if it doesn't come off it isn't going to come off. there is no tool to pull it off. i press them off when i press the crank out of the cases on the rebuild.
tatro
Where are you located,I have a similar project
Makes me cringe when I see Flip Flops in a workshop.
