    I grew up in a "High Risk" community where frequent drive by shootings & assaults occured on an almost daily basis. I'm a student in various combative martial arts including Arnis/Kali before being educated on the drawbacks of castle doctrine in my state, i typically carried a variety of lethal instruments on my person at all times. With that being said, I can attest from my own personal experiences that a well landed strike to a shallow bone target such as the clavical, forearm, or knee caps area's will almost always succeed in either disarming or immobilizing your attacker. Obviously you'll want to adjust your fighting system to work with your instrument & it's weight, it's range & it's mechanism. 👍

    Surprised i'm at 6:20 mins in (about ½ way) and he's not mentioned what was the whole point of baton use in law enforcement - that the priority is WHERE u hit and that the 1st priority is the outside of the knee.. . . So even though an extendable baton isn't heavy on the end, it doesn't need to be... (2nd priority would be collar bone... but u want to avoid that in case u miss) - All because you DON'T want to end in a situation where ur repeatedly hitting someone who's ramped up on drugs, alcohol or adrenaline or mentally ill... You don't want to resort to hitting someone in the head, ever... and anywhere other than outside of knee or collar bone isn't as pain-complying....
    One thing i actually found with extendable baton is the *psychological effect!...* When they HEAR THAT HEAVY METAL CLICK of it extending, they usually drop their weapon!

    I'd be interested in your thoughts regarding weight versus maneuverability. A piece of rattan moves a lot faster than an expandable or fixed length baton. And another factor is what is the target? Are you going for a hand that's holding a knife or stick, or are you trying to take the legs out? I was with animal control so I preferred using a piece of bamboo that was split like a shinai but not wrapped at the striking end and I would be going for the legs so as not to seriously injure the nice pit-bull(s). that raises another issue for law enforcement. That dog has a head like a football helmet. I've seen a .308 round go through the scalp, graze the skull, come out the other end and the dog was still running around☠️ so go for the legs.I always appreciated how PD and the sheriffs department (OCSD) backed us up with the agency assist every time. Stay safe out there 💙

    • @wicklowabby7977
      @wicklowabby7977 Рік тому

      I'm certain that you meant .380 or perhaps .38 ACP bouncing off the skull... I can assure you that the .308 (7.62) round would easily penetrate the skull of a rhino (or the equally thick trump supporter) out past 100yds.

  • @EgaoKage
    @EgaoKage Рік тому +11

    14:08 Another reason to practice your techniques slowly is to "reverse engineer" the effects of adrenaline. When real threats are present, and dying is an immediate possibility, adrenaline will speed you up beyond your body's built-in safety limits (whether you like it or not). And not just your physical speed; your mind will speed up too. If you do train at full speed, and then find yourself in a real threat situation, you'll probably find that your techniques aren't as effective as you expected them to be; everything will feel "off". How often have you heard it: _"it was like everything moved in slow motion, but I was at normal speed."_ Well, time is a constant. It didn't slow down. You sped up! So train slowly to account for this factor. :)

    Can we stop calling a baton a "less lethal" option? How is a baton a less lethal tool in a cops hands but if I swing it at someone it is "assault with a deadly weapon"? A baton is a hand to hand weapon.

    • @RustyShackleford556
      @RustyShackleford556 3 роки тому +21

      The difference is that cops don't use them to kill people, it's a control and subduement weapon. A civilian using a baton, given that they're not in a situation in which they're expecting to be subduing a riot, is using a baton as a deadly weapon.

As for your example, cops beat the shiiiit out of that guy. BUT, they didn't kill him because they weren't trying to. If they wanted to kill him they would've just caved his damn skull in with those batons, which is what happens when a civilian is using a baton on someone: a deadly assault, not restricted by doctrine or training. Just move to Texas and you can carry (and use) whatever you want :)

They act like they get a free pass to torture people while pretending they are morally superior. I've seen a cop continually hit a handcuffed sitting man in the knee until his kneecap exploded into little chunks. It's a deadly weapon and they use it like one.

    • @charlesholliday8600
      @charlesholliday8600 2 роки тому +9

      Not to say a baton is right for you and any given person; However, you can choose how hard to hit a person. A gun is not able to be modulated in how hard it hits. A knife is harder than a baton to use to deter only. The baton is not the problem, the depth of training is. There should be an end to people, especially those who don’t have any training, claiming what weapons I can use. Those freedoms remain even when someone else doesn’t understand my use of it. As far as Rodney King goes: what happened was wrong, but his example shows how they can be used less-than-lethally. Even so, what the cops did was wrong. Just like throwing his name out as if it somehow added to the conversation.

    Working security I used both the wooden batons with electrical tape wrapped around as a baton stop instead of the thicker rubber ones. Tho I wished I could have gotten the type one cop I new used. It was some sort of thick thread that was weaved to roll up when put into the baton ring. But unroll and lay flat when you take it out . Making it as if you had just the wood with nothing on it. Sadly it was sent to him and he had not idea where that person had gotten it.
    Also carried an ASP for awhile. Est thing about it was being compact on my duty belt. Did not like the balance of it. Best thing on it was extending it usually got everyone's attention real quick.

    It all boils down to certified training. An officer is trained to use a baton as a less lethal tool and is certified periodically on its use while a civilian might not be unless he/she takes this type of training and is certified on its use. That’s why any type of weapon in the hands of a civilian that potentially can cause death is looked as a deadly weapon since at the time of the incident it cannot be assessed if the civilian is trained or not 🤷🏻‍♂️. Still regardless of who you are the presence of a baton that is being used by anyone could be assessed as a lethal mean that requires an escalation of force or show of force 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@FunkerTactical For sure, but you can only get so smart when still being weak and insecure, always demanding backup or using lethal force prematurely. Female cops, manlet cops = disgrace.

      @@Sannidor you're not wrong I've seen the same thing in corrections with a 120 pound dude getting knocked into another planet by a 200 pound muscular felon. If they can't display any aptitude when it comes to hand to hand they shouldn't be working they're a liability to themselves and others. It was the inmates that ended up having to save the dude. They really need to up the standards.

      I’ll take my competent female officers over my boneheaded gym rats every day.
      Use of force accounts for less than 1.8% of what we do. Of the entirety of those uses of force, how much you can bench press only needs to comes into play in a few select cases.
      More often than not I have to account for overly zealous meat heads bull-rushing into a situation and using excessive force when they could have easily deescalated with verbal skills. Seems these same officers are the same ones that can’t hit the broadside of a barn with their projectile weapons either.
      My best tracker and sharpshooter is a female officer, and absent knowing what you look like, I’d be willing to bet good money she’d submit you in less than 60 seconds.

      Have you seen a woman fight on mma? physically weak doesnt necesarily means vulnerable. Cops are taught some self maneuvers that dont rely purely on your raw strenght, and those are pretty efective. Plus with other non lethal weapons, like tasers and the like, its good enough. Better to have 1000 thousands normal cops in a city than 500 hyper muscular and strong ones.

    And yet we civilians cannot own such “ Less than lethal “ tools to defend ourselves, as an option to firearms….especially in DummyCrap run state. 🤨🤷‍♂️
