  • Ketosis is a therapeutic physiologic state induced by eating a keto (reduced-carb) diet that can treat, and often reverse, a wide range of illnesses from type 2 diabetes, to psychiatric conditions like bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia. A medical keto diet can be a very powerful intervention, but, sometimes, people are told that their other health conditions, such as gout or high LDL cholesterol, would make following a keto diet unsafe. In most cases, even with other health conditions, ketogenic therapy can be highly beneficial.
In this video, Dr. Bret Scher goes over some of the most common conditions that many people falsely believe would interfere with safe implementation of a keto diet, including: gallbladder removal, bariatric surgery, gout, high cholesterol and heart disease. He explains that following a keto diet with these conditions is, in fact, safe, if approached in the right way with clinical supervision.

Why would I work with my healthcare team as he said I should if I have some problems on a ketogenic diet? These are the same establishment doctors who shun carnivore and keto in favor of the flawed food pyramid most doctors tout. These same doctors say consuming seed oils and processed foods are fine and moderate alcohol drinking is okay. Sorry, I will not take their advise. I have done my own research and never been healthier. My former doctor said I had a fatty liver and nothing I can do about it but live with it. There are many other things they told me I had to live with and maintain with pills. I look at most doctors now as shamans.

Has any doctor EVER asked about your diet when you complained about a health problem? I can't think of a time. Ever. Just blithely prescribing pills to suppress symptoms. That's not healing medicine. It's a criminal cover-up!

We have many people in our support group with no gall bladder and they just needed to take it slow with bumping up the fat slowly. Now they can do 80% fat or higher with no problems. The body is an amazing thing!

We've come a long way from "what is keto?" Or "I thought ketosis is the same as diabetic ketoacidosis ?" To "can I do a ketogenic diet?" Or "is keto right for me?" Is an indicator things are kinda moving in the right direction. How much worse can it get before it gets better. My prediction is that more people will eventually realize they cannot medicate or drug or quick fix their way out of the current sick care system.

6+ year carnivore here. Gall bladder removed 14-15 years ago. You can eat high fat but you will have to slowly titrate. I try to eat as high fat as I can and still get diarrhea every now and then. Having diarrhea is not a bad thing if you only have it occasionally. You have to find your own limits and push it to the edge. Fat is the most important macros and should be the focus of anyone starting a ketogenic diet. This is not Atkins and it’s not about just shoving a bunch of meat down your gullet! Eat as much fatty red meat as you can till it stops tasting good. Listen to your hunger and thirst cues also.

My husband and I tried keto, but were always craving carbs and couldn't stick to a keto diet. I like The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet book by Donald Hensrud. This book teaches to measure portions of protein, carbs and fat to keep calories ideal and teaches to have a serving of fruit and nonstarchy vegetables with every meal. Lost thirty pounds and have kept it off for 3 years following this diet.

    Hello, i have one question:
I have heard that your ketones should be at least above 2.5 mmol/l in order to treat psychotic symptoms.
Does it make a difference if I do for example a ketogenic diet with an 2:1 ratio combined with exougenous ketones to reach that goal or does it have to be an 3:1 or even 4:1 ratio?
I know that exogenous ketones does not have exactly the same effects such as ketones produced by your own body (specificly on your mitochondria), but I heard from a few people that it can also be effective to combine with exougenous ketones in order to reach the right amount of ketones for therapeutic effects.
Maybe you can give me an answer on this, would be really helpful!
    Thanks! :)

I'm not sure there is a clear level that is required for psychiatric benefits. Some feel better at higher levels, like above 2.0, and others see improvements even below 1.0. So it's clear there is more to learn. And we arent sure how exogenous ketones may add to the therapeutic benefit. Working with a trained clinician (like a coach, therapist, dietician, etc) can be really helpful to test these questions on an individual basis.

    Dear @Metabolic Mind,
I have heard you discuss how some individuals may experience temporary hypomania or mania when transitioning into a keto diet, with symptoms typically subsiding by week 3.
I am curious to know if someone accidentally goes out of ketosis or off the diet for a day or two, and then resumes the keto diet, whether they are likely to experience the temporary phase of hypomania once again?
    Thank you for your insights!

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  Місяць тому

That's an area where we have to rely on individual reports and limited clinical experience, but it does appear that some people can get "mildly hypomanic" transitioning back into ketosis after being out for a short time, like a few days. Although we don't have data on this, it is likely that the risk is lower compared to an initial transition, although not zero chance.

Thanks for your question. That's tough to answer without knowing more details. Some people report feeling more energy and thinking more clearly when in ketosis, but this is not a universal finding. Some recommend trying ketosis for 2-3 months to see if someone feels any different. But everyone's journey and experience is individual.

Thanks for your comment. Perhaps you and your healthcare team can come up with a plan to ensure you are getting enough protein and doing resistance training to maintain or even add muscle mass. Following DEXA scans or other measurements of lean mass can help determine if you are achieving your goals rather than assuming you will lose lean mass. That might be a good discussion to have!

It seems this video is being put in the feed of hardcore ignorant people determined to maintain all the myths. I can tell toy that you can thrive on a total carnivore diet. In fact, you will find it easier than trying to keep to 30 carbs a day. That gets to be very tricky. Also don’t eat artificial sweeteners or artificial anything. If you love beef, just eat it every day. Bacon and eggs or sausage and eggs for breakfast. Eating carbs causes insulin resistance, which shows up for most people as fluid retention.
