Those style beds with the folding sides are super common in asia in general (particularly on JDM Kei trucks). I dont understand why they arent more standard in the US, theyre so useful.
Because the big american trucks aren't utility vehicles. Their bed is too high to be practical. They are mainly used to satisfy the ego of their buyers.
here in Guatemala you can also see those things. These types of beds are made by third-party companies. The "originals" are very rare accessories that few dealers have.
That would be perfect to haul things around on my ranch! From weeds to a bale of hay and weeds to dump in my junk pile. What would the price out the door be?

So long as you replace voltage with like voltage, a battery replacement shouldnt affect the electronics at all (so, replace 12 volt with 12 volt. I think LiFePO4 batteries are probably the ideal upgrade. Theyre a bit heavier than lithium, but still more energy dense and lighter than lead. More importantly, LiFePO4 handles temperature changes a lot better than lithium. Super hot or super cold days can degrade a lithium battery. A lot of lithium EVs use a temperature controlled enclosure for the battery to keep them healthy. The batteries on these are quite exposed to the elements though, and LiFePO4 are pretty tough in bad environments.
You would have to contact your county office to get info on low-speed vehicles and their legality. Most likely these would be legal in the beach counties, but not up north near the city.
I like the concept of these. A durable shockproof dentproof rustproof plastic utility truck with a indestructable bedliner coating could be produced. A pro model could offer the choice of marine grade stainless steel for all the metal parts. Strong doesnt always have to be big even. The fold down pickup truck box for this truck does look much more durable than the previous version. Can the fold down walls be removable for those not needing them to boost range? Are they willing to offer a choice of battery configurations from low range dollar store grade batteries, all the way up to the potentials of thorium? A emergency LoRa device can help for safety reasons even beyond the range of cellphone towers, it's a very simple ultra low powered radio device that only costs about 25 bux, and should be in the dashboard of all vehicles, because frostbite never really produces afterlives. Produce a Haynes/Chiltons type manual for it, even produce some walkthroughs of all the possible repairs and maintenance schedules, and see a boost in sales by simplification.
The fold down bed sides are pretty common in asia. I dont think I've seen anyone take them off completely for a permanent flat bed, but there's no reason why you couldnt. The hinges arent like, 'quick disconnect', but each hinge is nothing more than one fairly accessible bolt. So yeah, given 10 or 20 minutes with a socket setup, you could probably take the sides off completely fairly easily.
