Shireen's screams still give me chills and I've watched this dozens of times over the years. The actress said she had her mother drive her to abandoned places and empty parking lots so she could practice her screams without disturbing anybody lol. But man, so brutal and just another reminder that no one is safe in this story.

When I said Stannis is depressing, THIS episode is what makes his story arc depressing. • @Sweet_Venom0027

I disagree. I think that he is a great battle commander but he isn't really suited to be a king, he's too rigid and domineering to do so. It also doesn't help that his seemingly favorite advisor is one who advocates burning people alive for their religious beliefs that conflict with her own.
If It was him and Renly then they would have been great together. The rigid and strong force behind the warm and welcoming smile, too bad they couldn't just compromise. Davos helps temper a bit of Stannis' rigid way of doing things and he was very useful in getting aid for their cause but he wasn't really trained to rule or be a hand. Imo anyway.

This to me is the most terrifying thing. Not only the mere act of murdering your own child in the most gruesome way imaginable. But the way everyone reacts.
Stannis is broken, you can tell. He is a shadow of his former self. He's (in my opinion) simply moving forward because if he doesn't he is left with nothing more than the fact he has betrayed everything. If he stops moving, all the terror was for nothing. That is a terrifying mindset to have. Evil for evil's sake is chilling, someone who revels in it. But Stannis truely depends on it. That's mortifying.
His Wife simply breaks. You can tell throughout the series she is a woman intimidated by the circumstances of her life. She is an easy victim to the cult the Red Woman establishes. Stannis was not the kindest husband, but I believe in his own, rigid way, he was good to her. As good as he could be, which was better than most in Westeros. So she had a life devoid of love or passion, but at least she had security, stability, and much like some other women in the show, a daughter. I see her as a mirror to many other women in GoT. Her relationship with her child is an interesting mirror to Cersei, her downtrodden attitude and manipulatability an interesting mirror to Sansa. For all the discomfort her scenes may have caused throughout the show and the general unlikable nature she mostly had, at the end we see her for what she was. A firghtened, helpless woman in a world that gave her very little, and took what little it did give away.
And Melisandre just smiles, convinced she is right. So convinced in her Lord of Light she disregards the pleading, screaming child. She disregards the horrified look of most of the onlookers. The discomfort even among her most devout. It doesn't matter, nothing actually matters to this woman, other than her faith. She is right, and that is enough.
This scene is a microcosm of human misery and cruelty. It's amazing for what it is. Sadly, what it is is terrible. And way more relatable than it should be for us.

In the books though Stannis left Shireen, Melisandre and Sylese at castle black then marches for winterfell. In the sample chapter of Winds Of Winter He let's Ser Justin Massey know Shireen is his heir and the sellswords are to follow Shireen if he dies at winterfell and that happens when he is closing in on winterfell. His men are already freezing to death in the books at said point and he plans on sacrificing someone else to lessen winter. I don't want to spoil anything for Major but I am pretty sure she gets burned alive in the books just at castle black and I am sure you know the reason why Melisandre would do that especially with how the book ended. @@girlnettles This is true but the biggest difference is the way the show portrays it. The show portrays Stannis as some zealot who is power hungry for the throne. The writing in the show was super lazy and garbage and it seemed like they wanted to push Stannis aside to make room for their "main character" Jon Snow to win this fight instead. So they conveniently have everything fall apart for Stannis in one episode and make him burn his daughter to make the viewers hate him/justify pushing his arc aside to make room for the protagonist to take it over.
Even if he does end up sacrificing Shireen in the books, it's going make sense. It won't be for ambition to sit on the iron throne like the show portrayed it, he will genuinely think he is saving the realm. I think he will beat the Boltons and later fight the white walkers. When all hope is lost, he might burn her in an effort to save the continent. It's going to be steadily built up and done in a tragic way (weighing the life of his daughter against the survival of the realm), not some garbage thrown into an episode to make you turn on the character.

It breaks my heart how Shireen pleads to her father. After everything he's ever said to her, it would have been so hard to believe he could really do this. She must have held out hope she could get through to him, right up until the end. The betrayal of watching your own parents watch you burn… I can't even imagine it.

I don’t even think Stannis was seduced by the power and would do anything for it. Melisandre told him he was the prince that was promised, the chosen one from the Lord of Light sent to save everyone in the world. The things Melisandre has shown him and been able to do has him completely convinced of the prophecy.
He believes he has to make the ultimate sacrifice for a greater good and that it is his duty to do that to save everyone

Much live to you major for toughing this one out. It was hard to see them take out Shareen. I had a feeling when they sent sir Davos away, it gave them opportunity to do something to Shareen. She so innocently wanted to help her stressed out father, but never saw that they would sacrifice her...just sickening. Man the sons of tge Harpy are treacherous. I'm glad that Jorah keeps returning to seek the queen's forgiveness. As far as his grey scale, I believe that his diseased skin has to make direct contact onto uninfected skin. That's why he caught it because those disrased guys were completely covered in it and may have touched his bare skin. I want to say that grey worm was safe somewhere still recovering from his injuries. Thank you for not shutting it down. We're in this together my brother.

37:03 - I think both genders get it bad on the show. How about Unsullied - 8000 men castrated and thousands before. Considering how often swords clash in this land, at least women are not expected to fight and some safety is provided for them.
Something tells me that if Stannis had a son instead of a daughter, he would still burn his son at the stake for his Fire god (who is indiscriminate towards genders, only wants blood).

You get to process the horror of shirreen's destruction for a week. Then you come to the next episode and can gird your loins, and ready to see the aftermath, but then move on. Well, I also had to mention something about this in a comment above, since there seems to be a lot of misconceptions about the amount of violence directed at females. If you really examine all the victims, you’ll see that it’s actually quite balanced. Despite what many have said about women being prominently hurt in this seres, men actually get it just as bad. We simply don’t notice it when they do, because we have become so accustomed to seeing violence committed by men against other men. This show does not discriminate, and no one-male, female, adult, or child-is safe. That’s one thing that set it uniquely apart from so many others at the time.

@@MermaidInTheWater Unfortunately many people have, including some in the comments here. My apologies if I've misunderstood you, but what point is there for you to specifically mention the horrors of what happen to women, if you didn't think this show directed more violence against them somehow? I'm only saying that this series depicts horrendous acts of violence against anyone & everyone across the board, indiscriminately. If you agree, then we're actually on the same page.

    • @MermaidInTheWater
      @MermaidInTheWater 2 роки тому

@@Eclectic-ey1di what? I mentioned it because that’s what major talked about in his video. I never said anything about violence only happening against women. We all see the same show and see all the violence against everyone in it. Clearly major is affected by the violence against women and I found his comments about it touching. I don’t see the point in you trying to correct everyone when they mention it as if we somehow think this is only happening to women?

@@MermaidInTheWater There's no need to be so defensive. I'm not attacking you, or Major, or anyone. But there were indeed numerous others here that did say that the viloence in this show was directed more at women; and the critisms I have are valid. Having said that, Shireen's death was the worst in the enitre series for me. One that resonated for many days after I watched the episode. It was told there was a point to not making that the end scene.
It was meant to "feel" so "pointless" because it doesn't do anything for anyone. It was pointless!
Ned's beheading, red wedding etc ended the episodes because it had "purpose".

Yeah, you’re going to get upset but you’re also going experience happiness. The mix of good and bad, even when the bad is super terrible, is what makes this series/story so realistic. This show never fails to find an opportunity to punch you in the gut. One of the toughest moments in the entire show man. Hope you can stick through it, you gotta be finished by August so you can watch the new show with us in real time.
Also, my guess is the grayscale is only contagious by contact wherever the skin is infected. So as it spreads, you become more infectious. The stone men were covered head to toe in grayscale, so even their fingers can spread it, where Jorah just has it on his arm at this point, which I'd imagine touching that infected area probably would infect you. And as for Jorah's sleeve, it was a pretty loose sleeve, so as he's swinging his arms fighting off the stone men, it's very possible his sleeve was moving around too, so incidental skin on skin contact is likely.
