I always took “U” to be Kendrick talking to himself. The poem leading into the song states “found myself screaming in a hotel room”, and you hear the house keeping knocking on the door before the second verse. It’s Kendrick voicing the internal self loathing he struggles with, his survivor’s guilt, how he misuses his influence like in “These Walls”.
This was the first album I listened to when starting my rap journey. Still to this day 5 years later I have not heard anything better. Absolute masterpiece.
Great reaction to a one-of-a-kind masterpiece! I had Complexion, Blacker the Berry and You Ain't Gotta Lie on repeat this year. A lot of people think deep, complex music is trash. It's sad.
I’ve listened to over 3000 albums and I’ve never found anything better than To Pimp A Butterfly… the only albums that come close are Animals, wish you were here , loveless, use your illusion1, remain in light, in rainbows, ok computer, physical graffiti, the queen is dead, good kid maad city and it’s a big difference… I’ve never thought a hiphop album would be such a masterpiece
If you haven’t heard the EP Untitled Unmastered, you should check that out too. It’s a collection of songs that didn’t make the cut for this album but they’re still phenomenal. Also, there’s a single version of the song “i” that is the studio recording without the live concert elements, interruption, and poem. I love all of that in be context of the album, but sometimes I just need to jam out to the full song by itself. And he did a great live performance of that one on SNL that you can see on UA-cam still.
This is gonna be slightly off topic but, based on this reaction, I think you'll hear and appreciate what I'm hearing in _Luther_ from his new album. Luther has my whole heart. To me, it sounds less like a straightforward love song and more like a song about his love of hip hop and the beauty and potential he sees in black people, black music, and black culture... which he so badly wants to protect from the forces that seek to colonize it. Nobody else seems to hear Luther that way but it jumps _all_ the way out to me. And I think most, if not all, of his love songs are about hip hop, along with most of his verses that appear to be directed toward a girl (regardless of what kind of song it is.) 🎶Take your enemies in front of god, introduce `em to that light, hit 'em strictly with that fye... This a vibe, do your dance, let em watch... In this world, concrete flowers grow... I wouldn't give these nobodies no sympathy... If this world was mine. Even when they're listing things like "'rari, crown, wrist, froze," these are common fixtures in rap music and hip hop culture. One of the slickest lines "...drip, pound on the way home," sounds sexual but to me it seems like swag (drip) and speakers (pound), as in listening to good, black music in the car. That song literally makes me tear up. It's very endearing to me, his earnest wish for people in places like Compton to see themselves the way he does. 🎶 Better days coming for sure... I'll take away the pain, I'll give you everything... I just wanna see you win. 🤎
Well first , it’s so crazy because I just dropped my gnx reaction and Luther is my favorite song. Secondly , this is why I make these videos because I didn’t have this perspective but that makes so much sense. His music is always referring to a concept or idea rather than just a person or thing. I love ppl who go this into depth that’s fire! Thank you ❤️
You probably have the most underrated comment on here because after i read it i went back and listened a few more times and i see the vision you have and it makes sense... gloria was a love song to his pen! Beautiful analogy frfr
@@serfranklin6022 Some German dude gave it to Kendrick, that interview was never released. Kendrick then took permission from late Afeni Shakur to use it for his album. The album was supposed to be called To (2) Pimp (P) A (A) Caterpillar (C) as in '2PAC' but later he thought it was too on the nose and changed it to "To Pimp A Butterfly".
Started listen to Kendrick cuz of the rap beef and tpab EASILY my favourite album of all time, also originally the album was gonna be called To Pimp A Caterpillar (Tpac) to honour Tupac
1:28:55 that’s exactly why when it came to this beef with Drake, Kendrick was so much more believable. Because he’s laid it all out for us, good and bad.
I honestly think 7 Minute Drill was one of the best songs in the beef this year, but saying TPAB put people to sleep was bonkers. I bought this CD the day it came out, put it in my car, and didn’t take it out for at least a year. I listened to it on repeat more times than I can count.
Its not. While Kendrick has sent subliminals here a.d there at Drake, "you aint gotta lie" can easily be applyed to the people who wanna fit in with groups of people to look cool, but really they dont belong. It happens all the time living in the hood and can cause people to get pressured into doing things they couldnt.

Your right
It's surprising to me that there are so many hip-hop fans who skipped TPAB. Such a classic album.
This album still has one of the craziest intros in hip-hop!
Facts
This album got out in Harvard Vault and Library of Congress
True. And the Pulitzer for DAMN wouldn’t have happened without TPAB.
This was the first album I listened to when starting my rap journey. Still to this day 5 years later I have not heard anything better. Absolute masterpiece.
Fax bro best album of all time possibly
Rapsody is criminally underrated. No one really reacts to her on here, and she's one of the best in the game, with no qualifiers.

The Tupac interview was actually an unreleased interview that someone gave Kendrick :). He talks about it in one of his interviews about the album.
Pac's mom gave it to Kenny, and gave him the ok to use it in the record
