Cant wait for the TPAB reaction it’s my 2nd favorite album of all time. Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is 1st
Can we all agree Gnx is a mixtape and not levels of his previous album 😅
@@Cee_Hit’s better than uu not including his actual mixtapes but I don’t think gnx itself is a mixtape
@@KOTS355 I was basically saying gnx is easily his worst project 😂
it's really not better than untitled unmastered.... Which was neither an album or mixtape, just half finished songs.
I know gnx is released as an album but it's not on the level of Kendricks previous projects and sounds like he just ran with the 'not like us' wave. Tbf it's probably a West Coast sounding album he's always wanted to make to have some of his friends feature on it.
@@Cee_HI really like GNX. Not every album has to be overly thematic and lyrical to be great. The only skips on there are GNX and Peekaboo imo. I’d say it’s a solid 8 out of 10. If anything, it being his worst just speaks to how good of an artist he actually is and how solid his catalog is.
OMGGGG there’s nothing quite like listening to this album for the first time. can’t wait for your reaction to TPAB!!
same, I keep checking back, lol
Grasping Sing About Me on a blind first listen is by no means an easy task if you didnt listen to section 80 first
Shows to how smart this man is. Just subscribed.
I mean it's not easy if you have no reference to any rap whatsoever 😅
Sing about me is other people talking to Kdot about him
@@SmittyD33 I think that's very evident 😂
@@Cee_H He didn't catch it, I'm at that point in the video and as I type this he's parsing over the Section.80 line and wondering if Kenny's talking to himself. I don't know if he puzzles it out later, but as he listens I feel he MIGHT get to it.
This is the best review I’ve seen and I’ve watched a lot. You’re breaking down the songs and learning the themes perfectly to the point it moves you emotionally which is what it was intended for. Keep it up man you’re brilliant
I appreciate this a lot!!
how this nigga didnt even understand sing about me....
In sing about me, im dying of thirst,
the first verse is from the perspective of his dead friend’s brother
the second verse is from the perspective of Keisha’s sister from “Keisha’s Song” on Section.80
the third verse is kendrick.
@michaelbeveraggi also he didn’t turn her down she faded away because she died from being a working girl , she said she don’t need a doctor to tell her how she feels physically
Alsoooo the woman talking at the end is Maya Angelou
@@alsknbullwrm she is a poetess right?
@ yes she was a famous poet and author
@@alsknbullwrm yeah i am familiar with some of her poems like " I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"
Watching his journey from Section 80 to Mr. Morale is beautiful. The growth is obvious and now he's at a place where he doesn't need anyone's approval.

you are not ready for the experience of hearing TPAB for the first time man! that album changed my life
24:40 hoooly shit “3s in the air, I can see you are in sync” I just realized that line is probably a reference to the outro of Section.80 “HiiiPower” where he says “everybody put three fingers in the air” a reference to the then recently released and skyrocketing in popularity book The Hunger Games where the three fingers up are and act of solidarity.
Love the video man! You’ve gained a new sub!
You’ve managed to grab most of the concept on a first listen which is impressive but I feel like you got confused at some parts so here’s a little recap and facts about the album, cause it’s a masterpiece that deserves that much attention.
The album is called good kid MAAD city and then on the cover it’s written; a short film by Kendrick Lamar which is essentially what it is, a film.
The story goes like this, and it all happens in one night:
Kendricks and his homies are rolling around freestyling and having fun in Backseat freestyle, all while having that lust for money and making it in life which is what money trees represents. They are young, hungry and ignorant which makes sense as to why he’s speaks like he does in those 2 songs. Then, art of peer pressure unfolds as he’s still with his homies and they’re getting up to no good. They rob a house and barely escape police, then his friend suggest they get alibis, which is when Kendrick borrows his moms van to go see sherane, and Poetic justice happens in his head basically, I like to imagine it’s what he’s feeling when he’s headed there lol. He gets there and gets jumped by the 2 guys, asking where he’s from and his grandma stay. Kendrick then goes on to Good kid which is just the way he’s feeling about life in Compton. He says “I got ate alive YESTERDAY” because he probably got jumped the day before too, that’s just life in Compton for him. Good kid is him realizing he’s a good kid, quite literally. Then MAAD city is his angry reaction to the jumping. It’s Kendrick knowing what the maad city is and means, and it’s him telling us that he’s done some serious evil shit, all while being conscious of what it means, and explaining the realities of Compton. His homies get him after the jumping and he gets influenced to just drink to forget or feel better, which is how swimming pools ties in. Swimming pools is a song that portrays all the bad of alcohol, which is ironic because it’s mostly known for being a party and drinking anthem lol, even myself knowing the meanings of the song drink to it with friends. His friends then proceed to go get revenge on the guys that jumped Kendrick in Sherane’s hood. Kendrick’s friend’s brother gets killed, and Kendrick talks from his friend’s perspective in sing about me’s first verse. It’s crazy because that friend ends up dying as well, as heard at the end of the verse. That part always gets me. Second verse is about Keisha’s sister from Keisha’s song on section 80 where a young prostitute named Keisha gets murdered, and her sister’s perspective on all of that. Third verse is Kendrick speaking from his own perspective and addressing those 2 issues directly. After his friends brother dies, Kendrick and his friends run into an old preacher and get right with god basically, accepting him in their lives to escape the violence of Compton, which is the exact same passage from the start of Sherane AKA master.. Real is just Kendrick’s thoughts after all of the story, and his parents popping back in to address the tragedy and give him wisdom. Song ends with the tape being pulled out, cause it’s canonically the end of the “movie”. Bitch don’t kill my vibe is present day Kendrick speaking on the industry, and Compton is a victory lap, because he made it out alive, and is now thriving, but he’s still showing love to where he came from.
It’s a long paragraph and an oversimplification but this album is worth being studied and it’s up to you to tie all the pieces together, since a lot of tracks and moments tie everything together, and you get a good idea of the timeline of everything.
I do recommend listening to the deluxe as well, the songs are great and some fit the vibe and message of the album but didn’t make sense to include for the overall narration of the album.
GKMC is the longest charting rap album of all time, still charting after 12 years.
Can’t wait for TPAB, in my opinion the greatest album ever made. Album literally saved my life. It’s very complicated so we don’t expect you to get it all in one listen, but take your time to digest and study it, cause it’s truly what I believe to be the best album of all time, from a conceptual and message standpoint.
Bro 3 hours? that crazy. you should listen to To Pimp a Butterfly, it manages to exceed this
@JamilaCrockett it is debatable to a lot of people but for me tpab very clearly takes the cake

This guy is really sharp. I like his breakdown of this album a lot.
Mostly, but sing about me was a struggle.
@@shaunwilliams101 ofc, that's like one of most complex songs to break down on a first listen, especially without further context from Section 80
@@forcicri93but he did really well
amazing reaction man, stuck around for every hour of it😄looking forward to the tpab reaction now
You NEED to react to Section.80, his last album before the major label contract was signed, he was so hungry on there.
Also, To Pimp a Butterfly is probably gonna fry your brain a bit, so if you want, you can look at the lyrics through Genius, where you can click annotations for concepts you don't understand. I hoghly recommend it for that album specifically.
That feeling that you got at 2hrs 30 at the end of Real is the exact reason why Kendrick has so much hate for Drakes fake shit. Because this was Kendrick’s real life, he fought really hard to be that good kid in a mad city and to make something of himself and he sees Drake playing dress ups and it (rightfully) pisses him off
recently had a situation that almost spiralled into me doing something that I'm sure you can guess without me saying, and calling my mom before it made me stop. Real makes me feel something every time I listen to it. the difference between Drake and Kendrick is that level of connection you get personally - Drake feels surface level *at best*.
Drake along with 95% of other rappers. Difference is Drake never claimed to be gangster like other rappers just alot of association with them
@@Cee_H Ever heard Money in the Grave ? If in that song he doesn't claim to be a gangster idk what he's saying.
@@zelighty8994 how can he claim to be a gangster when the whole world knows he was a teenage acting star who lil wayne found and signed 🙄
When he's talking about getting people hit or whatever to that nature he's talking about his money and connections he has and his security on presidential level..
And 95% of his catalog is girl talk, boss talk or party related. I didnt think people in the world are foolish enough to believe Drake was out on the streets like 50 cent but clearly youve proved me wrong 🤔
@@Cee_H So your first claim was he never claimed I showed you one of his most popular songs where he is claiming to be a gangster. You never argued the case that we shouldn’t believe him, when everyone who does 10 min of research knows he lies constantly about his upcoming. And for the record only, the people that do believe Drake’s facade are his fans.
Love the time you take with the music and the words, this is art that deserves that respect and your experience with it had me hooked. Can’t wait to see you experience more my brotha!
Sing about me was hard to get through... I was yelling at my fone like "nooooo start it over and listen!" Once you get it tho it hits harder man really enjoying this reaction.
I've heard this album more times than I could ever remember, but I always feel such an emotional resonance when watching people react to it for the first time. It's such a trip! I am excited to follow you on your Kendrick journey if you choose to continue down the path of his albums. But I also want to say all his old EPs and mixtapes are worth reacting to as well! His full musical journey is incredible and it keeps on coming!
Okay here's a broad chronology of the album I threw together:
The story starts en media res (in the middle) with Sherane. Kendrick going to her house before seeing her two cousins posted up outside
Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe, Backseat Freestyle, The Art of Peer Pressure, and Money Trees all take place *before* the events at the end of Sherane. This stretch of songs serves to familiarize us with this Kendrick, and, importantly, his influences and outlook on the world around him before the events that Sherane would kick off.
At the end of Poetic Justice we pick up *right where* Sherane left off, with Kendrick being grilled by Sheranes cousins. It's implied that he's going to get jumped. Good kid seems refers to a different situation where he's jumped, but it's generally agreed that this is referencing him getting jumped by Sheranes cousins.
good kid, and m.A.A.d City are basically one piece in two parts and they see Kendrick reflect on the chaos of his environment and how he's forced to be an unwilling and even unwitting participant in its most negative aspects. In the skit at the end we pick up after Kendrick has been jumped, with his friends giving him liquor to take the edge off, emotionally and physically. This lead us naturally into Swimming Pools.
At the end of Swimming Pools we see Dot and his friends retaliation for him getting jumped ("I hope that bitch that set him up out there too"), and the death of his friend Dave. This is the pivotal and climactic moment of the album.
SAMIDOT kind of takes a detour and explores the tragic conclusion to the life of Dave's brother (as well as the sister of Keisha, a character from section.80). In the context of the story, the song ends with Kendrick and his friends being confronted by a older woman seeing the hatred and violence in their hearts in response to Dave's death. She tells them they are dying of thirst, that they need faith, and convinces them to be saved.
Real Kendrick internalize what he's learned and come to grips with the world he lives him. GKMC is fundamentally a coming of age story, and this is the moment where Kendrick the Boy becomes Kendrick the Man, so to speak. His dad calls him and gives him some emotional and poignant pieces of wisdom that further solidify the change in the young Kendrick and in his world view.
Compton is a capstone to the album, and at the end were taken back to the very beginning of the story: Martin just went off, and Kendricks gotta go see Sherane. He should only be gone for about 15 minutes...
God I fucking love this album.
HOLY SHIT NOWAY THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT TO BE INSANE IM HYPED!!!
On “Sing about me”, he’s talking in a perspective of other people in his life-
When the girl fades out, she actually died from aids because in the bar she states she went to the DR and she physically feels great, but then she fades away after stating that she will never go away…. Deep shit.
52:39 "halle berry or hallelujah? pick your poison" basically means that it doesn't matter if you choose to chase women or be super religious.. its poison either way and trust me from someone that grew up in church, this bar hits so hard
UR DOING A KENDRICK ALBUM???? OMGOMGOMGOMG SCREAMED
Why does nobody catch that she starts to “fade away” after she said “I’ll never fade away” repeatedly😭
She?
it took me lot of listens to get it too😂
@@lucasaraujo9595Kendrick’s rapping as Keisha from section 80
Everyone catches that lol
Amazing video, glad you didn't skip basically any of the music but still was able to give your detailed thoughts, can't wait for your TPaB vid, that's gonna be great. Although Sing About Me definitely feels like the climax of the narrative, I like to think of Real as like the epilogue especially his dad's phone message and then I envision Compton plays as the credits roll since it's considered a short film, it doesn't super fit in terms of the general sound of the album but fits thematically and always awesome to hear Dre again.
Swimming pools has a SICK video with it!!! You must check it out sometime. Kendrick is one of my favorite artists because I lived in Oakland for a long time and he pulls from both the LA rap scene and he also utilizes Bay Area slang and in money trees he mentions E40 (earl stevens) and listening to a lot of early Bay Area rap. He is so funny, earnest, intelligent and inspiring. Great reaction!! ❤
You should definitely listen to the rest of his discography, I watched your video and then started listening to his new album and maaaaan. Kendrick Lamar is an inspirational artist seeing how far he’s come.
Section.80 is definitely his start and feels way more put together like like an albulm rather than a mixtape so definitely check it out. Youll love it for sure. As multiple people ?
have said, Tpab(To pimp a butterfly), Untitled Unmastered, DAMN., then MMATBS(Mr Morale and the Big Steppers). His new albulm that was just released is his only "mixtape sounding" albulm which could be one, but overall its really a fun westcoast-pop albulm and I belive he will drop a more serious albulm soon after he performs at the superbowl or before.
I’m here for it for sure. Love how there isn’t 70 edits. You’re just taking every moment naturally. This is how Dot intends the albums be consumed.
Kendrick said in an interview that the remix with Jay-Z came about when he found out through Jay-Z's longtime friend that Jay was a fan of GKMC. After hearing this, Kendrick tracked Jay down and asked him to appear on the remix. The remix came out about 5 or 6 months after the album was released.
In the interview, Kendrick said that he was so excited that it took him a day to write and record his verse because he knew he had to go for it with Jay-Z being in the remix.
"Halle Berry or Hallelujah" is just a way of saying are you a bad person or are you a good person to put it simply, and Money Trees is a track about fighting the urge to be a bad person, yet your circumstances in life might entail you to break a few laws in order to earn enough money to survive. These kids don't want to do these things, but they have to. And that goes back to the name of the album, a good kid in a mad city. That's pretty much the main theme of it. Kendrick presents himself as someone who even though he was involved in the gang life and had to do bad things to survive, he's just a normal good kid on the inside and battles with himself constantly over things he's done in the past, just like most kids do when they end up in the gang life when they would rather not have to do those things to survive. He feels bad for doing certain things, but those things were a necessity or else he might not be here right now.
To answer your question, yes. He is.
LOVE THISSSS YOU JUST GOT A NEW SUBSCRIBER!! I loved how you took your time and really were invested into the album.
Yes...yes he is in fact the best. He's right there with Nas, Andre 3000 and Eminem in terms of rappers who have it all - lyricism, cadence, creativity, presence, cultural impact. Kanye and Jay z as well in terms of star quality and cultural impact. But there's very few in the history of music that is capable of doing what he does. Hopefully you react to all of his albums because there so much there to explore ;)
As a Christian, your SAMIDOT reaction brought me to tears man. That song is SO powerful and it’s so awesome that you can feel the power of the Lord through Kendrick’s writing even though you aren’t religious. I respect that so much brother❤️ amazing moment
KENDRICKKKKKKKK
MUSTARDDDDDD
Really enjoyable to watch you go through this absolutely incredible album. You seemed to be picking it up, but in Sing About Me, the first verse is from Kendrick's friend Dave's perspective, the one whose brother was shot during the interlude of Swimming Pools. As implied by the gunshots, he did in fact pass before this album dropped. The second verse is from Keisha's sister, who is described on Section. 80 in her song. Verse 3 is Kendrick reflecting on his life. Kendrick is one of the greatest artists ot our time, definitely continue with his discography, either Section.80 or TPAB next
Fun fact: the lady who taught them to pray at the end of "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst" was voiced by Maya Angelou.
I’m so excited for this!! You’re in for a journey Michael.
Phenomenal reaction my man. One of the best Kendrick reactions I've watched. You got a new subscriber
2:07:33 He's referencing the movie Boyz n the Hood, a must watch imo
"Halle Berry, or hallelujah"
It's the ethos of the entire album. The main question Kendrick is asking and seeks to answer: how does one live according to their values and morals in an environment that punishes the good natured and rewards the destructive? I.e. how does a good kid survive in a maad city?
The Halle berry, hallelujah line is an analogy for this choice. Dots saying that, in this world, you can either live comfortably (Halle Berry) or live righteously (hallelujah), but you can't have both. "Pick your poison, tell me what you do." They both have their downsides. Like he said "everybody gone respect the shooter (i.e. the 'Halle berry' choice) but the one in front of the gun (the righteous; the 'hallelujah' choice) lives forever"
Seriously one of the best type of these videos I've seen, I really hope you do more of Kendrick!
Man watching you first listening to this brings me back to 6th grade when this came out, you earned a subscriber. Glad to see you digging into the meaning and also enjoying the beauty of this masterpiece
Please drop the series 🙏🏼 been waiting since this video dropped
The first 3 verses in *"Sing About Me/ I'm Dying of Thirst"* is Kendrick rapping in 3 different perspectives (his best friend's brother, the sister of an stripper who he dedicated a song to on Section 80, and himself), Kendrick uses the different perspectives to convey the horrible situations happening in his hood while also wondering if HE will be remembered after he passes away (the "Am I worth it?" line is so powerful). Then the 2nd half of the song is Kendrick wanting to escape that life and break the cycle of senseless violence, which tells us why he puts so much effort as an artist in his music, his music literally saved his life and had a positive impact on his community.
OMG I AM SO EXITED FOR THIS JOURNEY AND FOR YOU TO GET TO TPAB!!!
I just watched the whole video. I absolutely love your input on the album! I cannot wait to see you react to another Kendrick album! I'd love to see you do TPAB next, but Section.80 would be very cool too!

Bro!!! I just subbed… def looking for more kendrick breakdowns… his albums are amazing
I don't know where you read that Section 80 is just a mixtape but it's wrong, it's his debut album, and this is his second. But GKMC is where Kendrick really popped off and became well known for sure.
The first verse in Sing About It is from the perspective of the brother in the skit just before (“they killed my brother”). Sounds like he was able to get revenge for his brother but was eventually killed himself in retaliation.
The second verse is from the perspective of Keisha’s sister. Keisha being the girl Kendrick rapped about on Section 80 (Keisha’s Song)

This is the first video i've seen of yours. Banger!
yea you gotta do Section 80 and all the rest of his albums. This has got to be the best album reaction I've ever seen. You really listen, pay attention, understand the poetry and writing, and even are not scared to not completely understand things and just try to give your best conclusion on the pieces you are given vs. looking everything up or even pretending to know something like other reactors do. It was especially cool to see you work through the meaning of Sing About Me/i'm Dying of Thirst. You started getting it as the song unfolded. Great reaction!

you're so lucky to hear this for the first time
Hey, I’m from Portugal and I loved watching your reaction. Good work❤
I'm So here for this. You're new to him??!!
Kendrick (and his former label) don’t subscribe to the idea of “mixtapes”-every project, even earlier compilations, was treated with the same weight and intention as an album. The best way to experience his work is chronologically, as the narratives build on one another and unfold linearly. Don’t get caught up in whether it’s labeled an album or not-just focus on the content. That’s what truly matters.
Wow, why did I cry with you at the prayer???? wow. It hit me the exact same time, then I saw you have to take a moment. Yeah, this album is genius.... and surprisingly moving. BTW, the female voice at the end of Sing About Me was Maya Angelou.
i'm so so glad you're doing these chronologically. have a blast :)
God bless you, bro. I really enjoyed this reaction. Your emotional response to this masterpiece was genuine and heart-felt.
Hoping this video gets enough views and traction that you record your reactions to his other albums Kendrick themes and growth in every album still amazes me to this day and I’ve listened to all of them thousands of times
I'm hear because of the algorithm and I'm just gonna say... You're gonna LOVE the next few albums if you keep going, Kendrick has a crazy discography, and it's all different. Great video, I'm excited to see the others!

I’m really glad I got a long ass commute, coz I thoroughly enjoyed watching/hearing this full listening experience. You caught on pretty quickly to most of the nuance happening which is cool. The older I get the more I’ve also noticed myself getting emotional about things the way you did here in some places. Very relatable. Great album, instant classic.

Probably the most down to earth reaction seen. No frills, no antics - sheer perceptiveness. Really good work bro. Do more
Just finished this whole review and I gotta say I wish you had more hiphop album reviews but you def gain a supporter of you 🤞🏽peace and love
His parents real time messages on this album makes me love and appreciate Kendrick all the more. His transparency is so relatable to many of us that lives in the hood. This is why he’s my #1 artist of all time.
Something interesting you may not have picked up on- Pharrell is the feature on good kid, and he also features and produces on Alright from TPAB. In the beef with Drake on Euphoria he says, “i don’t like you popping shit at Pharrell, for him I inherit the beef”. Likely due to Pharrell helping him out since the debut album and them becoming close and doing multiple songs together.
1hr went like nothing. Appreciate the reaction n the time you took for this album!

Definitely am!
It's not often than I really enjoy a reaction to an album, but man, this felt like listening to it with a friend. Idk, you're a chill guy, I like your comments and vibe.
I cried the first time I heard this too... His mother saying " And I love you kendrick" hat broke me because I miss that from my mother. RIP mom
