There was a secondary NBA on NBC theme in the final two seasons that they would sporadically use going into commercial breaks....Kind of a slower, more dramatic piece, it didn't fully replace the Roundball Rock theme, and I've never seen it uploaded on YT or whether it was a Tesh composition or not, but I'd be able to hum it.....

Pop eventually became a mediocre head coach for a non-scholarship D3 school. Pop was there for around 7 years when Brown was named HC of the Spurs. On a whim, Pop called Brown and asked if there was a spot on the staff. Brown surprisingly made him lead assistant. About 5 years later, the Spurs named Pop GM in what was considered a bizarre, underwhelming hire. Pop named Bob Hill head coach but fired him after just 2 years and named himself HC despite having only a few years of NBA experience (as an assistant). Pop was absolutely despised by Spurs fans for his first 2.5 years until the Spurs won the '99 title, at which point all was forgotten.

Let's remember something, all the footage from the 89s they used is owned by the CBS that passed it on to the NBA who only owns the teams and NBC had to make sure that they also had the clean feed of. Just another day of broadcast politics lol
Pretty interesting they picked these two teams considering the Spurs finished as the 2nd seed but were eliminated in the 1st round. And the Lakers finished as the 3rd seed and lost in the Finals.
NBC and the Roundball Rock theme music was the reason why I watched NBA games! NBC Sports was at a low point in 2002 after broadcast rights changed hands to the awful ABC... all they had was the Olympics, which has been a bad investment for them (sans the summer Olympics in Beijing 2008). When NBC Sports gets the NBA broadcast rights back, they should dump the Olympics. Nobody watches it or cares for it.
I sure do miss watching the NBA on NBC! It's crazy to think, they only had the league for 12 years, but, in that stretch of time, how many great memories and moments there were! The NBA on ABC/ ESPN is terrible! There is no other way to say it. The presentation, the music, the commentators... Everything. And to think, they've had the NBA for nearly 20 years! I wish the NBA would go back to NBC.
And I wish it would go back to CBS before that-- CBS had it for just 17 years, while ESPN/ABC has had its horrible excuse for "coverage" for over 2 decades.
Coming fall 2025, the return of the NBA on nbc. NBC will have regular season games on Sunday nights after the NFL season and Tuesday nights throughout the regular season, wild peacock will have 50 regular season games on Monday nights. NBC will now be the exclusive home of the NBA All-Star Weekend, the NBA opening night double header and the NBA MLK Day games. NBC and peacock will have 28 1st and 2nd round playoff games with the majority of those games on NBC and one of the Conference Finals 6 times. Unfortunately NBC won't have the NBA finals this time as ABC will continue to have the NBA finals. And yes, NBC got roundball rock back. Not only the NBA on NBC coming back, but the WNBA is also coming back to nbc, only this time WNBA will also have games on USA Network and peacock.
Would have been interesting to see where the lakers would have gone if Magic never got HIV? Wonder if it would have been Michael vs Magic multiple times in the finals. Magic had like 4-5 more years left

It belonged to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Next decade belonged to the Spurs and the Lakers.
Eventually, the Spurs won a title in the 90s.......1999. And not under Larry Brown, but Greg Popovich.
