- Опубліковано 9 чер 2024
- Video games are meant to bring joy, challenge and an overall satisfying experience to us as players. Here's a list of video game levels where the developers completely missed on those fronts. These levels are so widely hated by players that making it through any of them without launching a controller is a thing to be commended.

Once again, thank you so much for the shoutout, Jules. Cheers! ☺️👍
Elizabeth from Bioshock: Infinite is a classic example of a companion who actually helps out no matter the situation.
Elena Fisher too
"All you got to do is follow the damned train CJ"
Seared in memory is indeed the right expression, damn you Big Smoke !
While the game itself may be divisive, Garrus Vakarian from the Mass Effect series has always been solidly by Shep's side.
I am pretty sure Garrus will be on the list regardless of whether this comment "make it" as he is just *chefs kiss* companion and video game bro.
Best video game companions? Dog meat from fallout is among the most iconic in my opinion
I was thinking the same.
I was going to say Dogmeat but one of the best companions is the dog from secret of evermore; they actively battle, help find ingredients for alchemy spells, changes into 4 different types of dogs (including a futuristic toaster with a laser that pops out), change their play style to be defensive or aggressive, and you can switch between you and your dog! Every dog companion after has to live up to this good boy's standards
Once I reached laser toaster dog, I pretty much played as the dog exclusively, only switching back when the controlling the human was necessary for advancing.
tbh the RC helicopter missions were far more difficult than the train one in GTA
I honestly enjoyed the Library in Halo when it originally released, thought it gave the game a nice horror feeling
Ah. I stopped playing GTA Andreas around 2007, but forgot where. Thanks for reminding me.
I feel like I was the only person who was waiting on the speederbike stage from Battletoads, because for ages THAT kept being referred to as the hardest single board in a side-scroller
That damned TMNT level still haunts me 20+ years later.
It's the reason I wouldn't want to play that game again assuming that I still own that copy.
I first had TMNT when I was 5 and hated that level so much...didn't beat it until four years ago when I was 34 🤣
Ada from Fallout 4 is one of the best video game companions I've ever had. More so when you build her the right way.
Then she is pretty hard to stop and as an added bonus, she doesn't constantly jump in front of you and generally get in the way.
It almost makes Wrong Side of the Tracks worse knowing Big Smoke betrays you in the end. It’s like “Did you actually try to get those guys, Smoke?!”
The first time I played Psychonauts it was on non-steam PC version with no controller. I got stuck on Meat Circus for a decade.
Best human companion is alistair in dragon age - iconic character and far reaching effects throughout the series depending on the choices you make. Plus his lines with Morrigan are some of the funniest in game. Long live the king 🤴
BioShock Infinite is maybe the low point in the series, but know what's not a low? The first time you're out of bullets and Elizabeth throws you a new clip. A companion who saves you time looking for ammo in the middle of a gun fight? She gets my vote for best companion for sure!
Hk-47 from star wars knights of the old republic has got to be one of the best companions in all gaming. The way he refers to you and every other sentient being as "meatbags" is simply sublime.
As someone who currently has 30,000+ hours in FFXIV any and EVERY solo instance in FFXIV that includes the words 'In the following battle you will play as...' as it's introduction.
As a kid my friend and I didn't know what hell slalom was. It took us days just to get everything else marked off the list. My friend figured out what slalom was when he just gave up and was driving around wildly.
It’s all in the name, the Companion cube.
I practically jumped out of my skin with happiness at post-credits moment in Portal 2 when GlaDOS gave me a gift I never could have hoped for.
I think the best video game companions are your own party from any on the monster catcher type games (Pokemon, Digimon, Nexomon, Temtem, Jade Cocoon, etc.) Because those whole games are completely based around your companions and there wouldn't even be a game without them.
Weird one for best companion: Anna, the sat nav in Forza Horizon games. She knows my name, she lets me know about nearby events, and she tells me exactly where I need to go
Vetra from Mass Effect Andromeda, she’s a beast once you get her loyalty unlocked.
The best companion has to be Torgal in Final Fantasy XVI.
Not only does this good boy help you fight and heal your wounds, there is nothing cooler than him going Godzilla mode later in the game.
Plus, you can pet him whenever you want!!
My favorite companion is Wrex from Mass Effect, what a loveable bulldozer!
The Blob from A Boy And His Blob is quite the companion. It can turn into a ton of useful things to help the player character complete the game.
Funny enough for Lion King, I had no difficulty passing can't wait to be king level. But the worst one for me was stampede level. Because of how they converted what is essentially 3D scenario into 2D, it made it so hard for me to properly gauge how far wildebeests were and how quickly were they coming in. It literally turned it into level of pure memorization for me, because I just couldn't play it in reactive manner. Like carpet level in Aladdin at least had only few points you had to memorize, but most of it I could do in reactive manner by just following what I was shown. But stampede was completely impossible without just fully memorizing whole path of where I need to be and when to move and even with that, I had issues with timings stuff right.
Though I do have to give shutout to carpet levels in a way the easiest most difficult mechanic, which is when hands would show you to go either up or down... for some reason I made mistake of trying to do both and ending in the middle way more times than I would like to admit... and at the same time, it was so simple, but for some reason totally messed up with my mind. :-D
Also for Kingdom Hearths, got the games when they got to PC, but their storytelling, because you have to do all side games made me give up after first. Because then you got that castle of forgetting or whatever and I really disliked how mechanics played there... Hence why I never started KH2. They really should make relatively brief story catch up videos for mainline entries. Because there are bound to be more of those side games I won't like, but numbered entries don't give you all information you need.
Best companion for me was Big Black in Skate 2, my man always has your back when you're just trying to skate without all the hate
I didn't get passed the tutorial stage of Driver, but I did complete the underwater level of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, by the time I did, I think I was fed up with that game.
Best companions is a tie between the Mass Effect and Baldur’s Gate 3 rosters. Each has so much depth and development to them. I’d probably have to side with ME, just because some of them have a trilogy worth of development.
As a specific partner character though, Midna stands out as the absolute best Zelda companion character by a long, LONG mile.
Can’t Wait To Be King is a nightmarish level in a hugely under appreciated game!
My favorite video game companions are the Marines collective from Halo 2 you can give them the best weapons and they will have unlimited ammo so much fun riding around in the warthog with a passenger who has a rocket or a sniper
That 2nd level of lion king was my introduction to "rage gaming" as a child. Fun times.❤
I Loved the dog in Fable 2. I even saved him over the thousands of townsfolk. 10/10 good boy, would do it again.
The tutorial level in Driver wasn't hard, just because people didn't know what 'slalom' meant is no excuse.
I've been hearing "How are people expected to know what a slalom is???" for years now. Meanwhile I was like "I knew that from like... age 4. But then again, I watched things like the Winter Olympics and stuff like that where you had TWO slalom events. Not to mention stuff like Epyx's "Games" series which actually had slalom events. But I also saw the word used in commercials and other things. So I'm just surprised at people NOT knowing it.
Omg! It's gotta be Dogmeat from Fallout 4.... He's such a loyal companion who never gives up on you..... Also ... You know.... The Fallout series haha
Also.... You're a legend, Jules! I definitely subscribed and look forward to every video :)
For me the best companion I ever had was 9S from first NieR:Automata's playtrough. Even now after all those years after playing it, his attitude makes me want to look at everything in brighter colours (that means before his character convertion in 2nd half of the game)
That damn SNES Lion King level...
Best companion? Navi of course! Who could ever forget her iconic “Hey! Listen!” that’s been seared into every gamer’s memory forevermore? Seriously speaking though, any of the three companions from Diablo 3 could make this cut, but I just love Kormac the Templar, so much character growth and development, yet every step of the way his self-serious banter and remarks are always hilarious. And of course, he’s a beefy tank that will rush to your defence without fail and, since his AI is not designed to focus on dealing damage, he won’t accidentally provoke the wrong enemies. And the way this adult fortress of a man becomes a bashful school boy in the clutches of puppy love whenever Eirena is involved, priceless!
Top adorable NPCs that turned out to be comoletely EVIL!
Best video game companions? As much as I'll get flack for saying it, Prince Tricky from Star Fox Adventures. Memorable to a point. Very useful in getting through specific areas. And you can change his pattern by just playing catch with him. I made him a neon green in my last playthrough
Best companions, Dog meat , Your Palico from the monster hunter series, and the mimic tear from Elden Ring.
Fallout New Vegas
With Boone the game turned into a Call of Duty kill cam compilation
"Is it Time"
Great companions? KOTOR's HK-47. His description of love is beautiful... in a macabre way.
Best video game companion would be Daxter from the Jak and Daxter series.
What happened to the deep cuts? That’s what made FGS unique. These entries we’ve seen on endless videos before. I’m pretty sure Jules has done this subject at least twice on WhatCulture.
The only companion that came to mind for me was Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite she is so helpful giving you ammo as well as her time rift abilities I want her on my side, didn't make the last mission any easier but the rest of the game was so much simpler with her
I'm sure Mass Effect will be well represented in companions, but I'm going to say Koromaru from Persona 3.
Clearly, the best companion is Your Dog. Fable, Fallout, Dragon Age, Haunting Ground, etc. ... There's good boys, and then there's the Best Boys.
They may be chatty beyond reason, but the best companions you can have, are the ones whom you choose. Pawns from Dragon's Dogma! No matter what kind of player you are, you can always have pawns that supply you with room to play how you desire to. :)
Mona/morgana from Persona 5 is a pretty awesome companion. How many other companions can turn into a bus?
I loved Midna from twilight princess as a companion. Her development was amazing
Minsc & Boo from the Baulder's Gate series. The unofficial mascots of the first two games.
Amplisa (or any Rouge Archer) in Diablo2. I got really attached to my first archer sidekick and never changed her. And in all 4 play throughs, I got the same one, Amplisa 😂
Best companions... Idk, a part of me wants to say Elizabeth from Bioshock: Infinite, a different part of me wants to say Riley from Call of Duty: Ghosts, and another part of me wants to say Sparx from the Spyro series
Elika from the prince of Persia reboot is one of the best companions.
I liked the jet ski levels in Uncharted. Yeah, the watercraft didn't control well, but I loved using the grenade launcher on all of the enemies
For the best video game companion I'd definitely say Huie from Haunting Ground is one of the best!! Best doggo helps Fiona with puzzles and does his best to protect her!!
Best companions? My first thoughts are Dogmeat from Fallout and Agro from Shadow of the Colossus.
Definitely not the best companions? Ashley and Sheva from Resident Evil.
Best companion has to be yes man from fallout new Vegas. While he is just an box for most of the beginning when you finally come across him he’s, a) hilarious since he has to agree with whatever you do, and b) gives you the option to use the security robots for yourself and rule the wasteland
Great list, although I've seen the same lists quite a few times. I've never had any problem with the Mafia race, beating it when the game first came out on my first time and every replay as well. Now, last time I replayed GTA: SA, I was expecting to replay Wrong Side of the Tracks a few times and hear Big Smoke's famous line. However, I beat it on the first try and was kind of disappointed that I did.
My favorite video game companion is Sparks the dragonfly stay golden. My flying health bar
Oh hey, the Library. My pick still technically made it in.
How about a list of the 10 best water levels in video games. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow comes to mind for this list.
Best companion characters: have to get mention for Pymm or the Pixie in Secret of Mana. 🔥🔥 You can set their weapons, set their attacks and magic.
Best companion definitely goes to Nick Valentine. The base game is great add the DLCs tho you become a side character, and he becomes such a focus point.
The best videogame companion is def Dogmeat in ANY Fallout, but specially in Fallout 4 where you can ask him to search for loot
If he counts, Atreus is the best video game companion. I thought he was going to be annoying & in the way, but he ends up carrying a huge part of the story and being crucial to surviving Nifelheim
For best companion, I would go with bode or Merrin from Jedi survivor as you can sit back and let them deal with the enemies
Huge props for not mentioning the low hanging fruit of OoT's Water Temple, or Sonic 1 Labyrinth Zone. Tired of seeing those two mentioned EVERY time.
This might be a personal thing but I’ll always love tali as a companion she’s just so amazingly wonderful
Best videogame companion for me is Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite. One of the best AI sidekick.
Here is an idea for a list: Top Ten Video Game "Top Ten Worst Levels" Videos That Had the Exact Same Ten Games That This List Featured.
Bounced off the whole series after uncharted’s upstream level. Library on halo is fine, always be moving forward, if you’re stopping to avoid enemies, don’t, just keep running and gunning.
Bastila Shan from Knights of the Old Republic.
Garrus from Mass Effect Trilogy
Serana from Skyrim
Dogmeat from Fallout
As soon as I heard that damn line from San Andreas, I immediately started twitching.
I would have to go with Sparx in the Spyro games. He was a staple, being the health indicator in the original three games. By the third game, they give him dialogue to add personality. Unfortunately, he had less than stellar moments in "The Legend of Spyro" games.
Mafia L's Fair Play in the definitive edition had me switch back to easy from Classic and lose out on an achievement because of it.
The race is just impossible
Thr Driver tutorial was 90% easier on PC with a keyboard. I wanted to throw my controller the first time trying it on PS1.
I mean Tails from Sonic games isn't the best companion you can receive but he is one of most iconic video games companion ever.
Best video game companion is hands down Nick Valentine from Fallout 4. I love Rose of Sharon Cassidy from New Vegas, but Nick is the only synthetic I want at my 6.
Fawkes in fallout 3 was the best companion ever. I mean, once you encounter him the 2nd time, he can and will kill everything before you even see it. Easiest game win ever. Runner up in the series: ED-E from new vegas
Manhunt that stupid subway level. It was so hard when I was younger!!
Where is the entry for the Battletoads jet bike level? Or the level after that, the Pit. I would put those up towards the most hated level for me.
I fluked Wrong Side of the Tracks the first time I played so wondered what the fuss was about until I tried a 2nd play through.
Ive always loved the library level tbh haha
While not a traditional companion, I say Johnny silverhand from cyberpunk 2077. Once he’s “in your head” he provides some of the better bits of commentary on what’s goin on in the world and acts as a moral ‘beacon’ for v to base themselves of off an know if they’re going too far in their search for glory in night city
daxter is the best video game companion in my opinion, he may get slightly annoying sometimes, but it makes him more lovable 🤣
I only played Unchartes for the first time a couple years back on PS4 and i hates that dammed river so much. Oh and that one tomb where the swinging braziers had a janky ass hit-box that would knock you off/fridge you even if you were nowhere near you.
Other than those two parts i'd say it was a nearly perfect first game.
In regards to Kingdom Hearts the one level i got stuck on, and probably shouldn't have been because its relatively simple in concept but i just kept fail, was the ice cream clapping game in Birth By Sleep. I had to get a friend to do it for me.
Also the on-rails shooter mission on the Drill Platform in Jak 2 can get in the bin. I have no idea why that mission is so hard, i gave up my Hero Mode run once i reached that level, i just cannot do it.
Best video game companions, rex and boone fallout new Vegas, well mostly Boone due to the fact that the enemies don't know what hits them.
Oddly I feel like the only one who LIKED the Atlantis levels in KH2 (it was the first games Atlantis that wasn't good since it was a water level and those tend to suck)
I don't know if it counts as a level, but the final boss on Drakengard 3 forces you to do an annoying rhythm timing section that lasts 7 or 8 minutes. There aren't any checkpoints, so one mistake and you have to start the whole thing over.
Dogmeat is the first companion I think of.
Hands down D dog the goodest of boys! Want to know where all enemies and lot is to plan your attack boom he got you. Fail in your stealth odds are he rips their throat out, want to be lazy and have him do all work well sit back with some binoculars and enjoy the show. No complaints no back talk no babysitting
I know this is not a traditional companion but the Caragors in Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor are tops in my book. Besides being the ultimate mount, when riding a Dire Caragor, up to 5 lesser Caragor will follow you forming a pack. They would absolutely tear ass in battle. I would always travel with one and found myself protecting them in battle. I definitely formed a bond with them and would get upset if my Dire Caragor would die! 😂
If a Caragor is not eligible for this list, then I will go with Dogmeat!
Battletoads stage 2 (hoverbikes) < TMNT stage 2
Trip from Enslaved. Massively underappreciated companion and game.
the bike levels in Battletoads games
You could have at least warned a person. Number 8 brings back so many. Terrible memories trigger warning people 3:01
Hmmm...i would have to say Futaba and Rise from persona series. Healing, stat buffs, and saving your bacon from time to time, telling you weaknesses and strengths of your enemies. I haven’t played P3: reload yet to suggest Fuuka, who wasn't too useful to me in the original/FES.
