I grew up starting on the NES, SNES & Genesis. I know punishing difficulty but being in my mid 30s now, I’m exhausted after work and the parenting thing. I don’t have the energy or patience to sweat playing & rather would just enjoy games on easy or “story mode” as many games call it now.
thats why i love save states. can make it thru sections that are very difficult without having to do the entire thing over and over again.
Right there with you brother. Even my trophy hunting days are done cause I don't have time and/or energy.
Unfair difficulty was never good.
Old games that were designed to be too hard are not perfect games
In the original NBA Street, the ref will call you out and tell you to increase the difficulty if you completely stomp your opponents on easy mode.

Double Dragon 2 on the NES does this. You can only do so many levels on easy mode and then it ends. I can't remember if the game mocks you afterwards.
Earthworm Jim on the Sega CD had an ending that basically mocked you for playing on easy. It had some worm facts, then some inside jokes from the developer.
I always remember putting the Genesis'/MegaDrive's Mega Turrican on easy mode, and after level 2 it just... stopped. The end. Easy mode was just the same game but most of it was missing. There was no outward mockery but boy did I feel mocked.

i got the first one on its original ds release before it was called zero escape (atleast the US version)
The only time i call people out for easy mode is when they criticize a game for being to easy when they're on easy mode, like bruh, that's you're fault, not the devs. That, or when they try to brag about how good they are compared to others, or crap like that.
Other than that, play how you want.
I mean it’s just a game that you play locked away in your home, it’s recreation, not a measure of your character and you’re not going to put this on your resume when applying for a job.
It’s a form of entertainment. It’s a pretty embarrassing thing to brag about.

What about Body Harvest on the N64, on easy you could not complete the game, it let you play all the levels set in the past, then you had to up the difficulty and play all over again to continue to the levels set in the future to save humanity.
Playing on easy mode is fine. Announcing it to the world as a point of pride, however, I don't understand.

Streets of Rage 3 coincidentally caused me to rage as a child when I discovered you couldn't get to the real ending on easy.
Timesplitrers 2 locked out parts of levels until played on harder difficulty...if i remember correctly

Touhou. In some games you just cant play last level on easy. + Sometimes have a comment about your skill from characters. And bad ending if use continue yes.

go take a look at the agarest series. it straight up tells you when you are selecting difficulty. I should go back and play that game again.

Fight N Rage. The game is already hard enough to beat without using continues. The last few stages are brutal.
If you do manage to beat the game on Easy mode, you cannot unlock any rewards. You have to go through the painful Normal And Hard mode to even unlock new features like computer controlling player two and new costumes

X-Men for the Sega Genesis. You couldn't finish the game on Easy, as it would stop you in a cut scene and literally tell you to go play it on a harder difficulty. Game Over. Never finished it but I played the crap out of Easy mode out of spite. Imo the game was ok.
Golden Axe 2 removes access to final stage/dungeon in easy mode.
If someone with arachnophobia is triggered by seeing a spider,on the screen of a device that they are holding in their hands,then maybe they have bigger problems than fear of spiders. Just because I have a fear of old people doesn't mean that I crap the bed when I have a zoom call with my grandma.
