The Satanic panic is a moral panic consisting of over 12,000 unsubstantiated cases of Satanic rituals starting in the United States in the 1980s, spreading throughout many parts of the world by the late 1990s, and persisting today.

to be fair, Sabbath and AC/DC were both TRYING to sound (and probably more importantly, to LOOK, with album covers, t-shirts, posters, etc) like they came direct from Satan- That infamy and "scary" factor were the best marketting tool they ever had (apart from people like Iommi, Butler, and Angus Young being incredible musicians, obv). I'm pretty sure that BOTH those (absolutely legendary) bands have had giant "Satan" props, as part of their touring live show, at one time or other.
Ozzy and Bon Scott were both pretty open about deliberaqtely acting outrageous, including seeming "Satanic", because the fans loved it, and BECAUSE controversy sold records.

Having lived through it I can tell you those years were very intense. It was for me the beginning of the end for me in the church because I found I could no longer trust what I believed, Nearly everything was perceived as demonic or Satanic, especially in the charismatic churches I was involved in at the time.

Can’t believe I never watched this one! Justin is hands-down one of my favorite people on the planet. Im so proud of what he has been able to accomplish and for overcoming the significant challenges he experienced when he was younger. As a grown up misfit and goth/raver kid who grew up in a conservative, rural midwestern town and spent many hours in the library after school with my face buried in obscure books about the Western Mystery Tradition, I feel like his experience easily could have been mine, and I empathize with him deeply. The good his work on Esoterica does, as well as your work here on MV, is incalculable and extremely important. Misinformation and conspiracy theories/mass delusions run rampant and spread faster than ever in our hyper-connected, always-online society, and often these narratives dominate in part because they simply fill an information vacuum in the space, and educating the public is the best way to combat it and prevent future moral panics in society.

When we refer to "satanic panic" as a moral panic, we are saying they were justified. It wasn't a moral panic it was victimization of people thought to be outside societal norms.

I watch Justin's "Satanic Panic" episode on Esoterica. I remember being "invited" to the local Pentecostal Church only to called up to have the pastor attempt to cast demons out of me. Because I listened to heavy metal music I guess
As far as back masking, Ozzy has trouble remembering his lyrics forwards let alone backwards. I grew up in 1970's I agree about "Black Sabbath". LSD Lucifer, Satan, Devil

Yup I remember the Satanic Panic back in the 80’s when I was still a Christian and that stuff was nuts! For example I had bought my 2 girl’s each an original Cabbage Patch doll when they first came out for Xmas and all I kept hearing at my church from EXTREME fanatic’s was that Cabbage Patch dolls were possessed by demons! I was told to burn the doll’s and cast the demons out of my 2 young daughters and cast them out of my house! Of course I did no such thing but that stuff was complete insanity for a lot of people. My oldest son was an avid D & D player and he was all Goth…he was a Metal head, wasn’t a serial killer, he didn’t eat babies, and never believed in the Satan nonsense…he was a great kid!
Great video…Thanks Derek and Dr. Sledge.

I was lucky enough to be around normal folk during this time, but I did have one friend whose Mom was absolutely CONVINCED that her parakeet "Mr. T" was a "barometer" of when Satan's influence was in the room. So my friend could in other words not openly listen to rock music that made the bird squawk. We of course both saw the bird freak out for unknown reasons while Christian music was gracing the dining room.

The fact that rock stars were put on trial for alleged claims about their musical content reminds me of the petition to get Congress to investigate Cuties (the little women in French) and to this day I still wonder how many people have seen the French film and like there's only one video review For Harriet that actually saw the film and gave a review of bullying and the affects of social media on young girls everyone else who reviews the film talks about things that never happened in the film and it was on those claims that people asked Congress to review Cuties the film director and Netflix.

29:00 Ozzie Osborne did put backwards talking in his songs - didn’t he? One song was about an alcoholic friend of his who committed suicide. That is what the trial was about. The “message” was there. The point was that a song “suicide soliton” should not be held as a cause for a teenager dying.

Hahaha yes! My dad tore off my Kiss poster in 1980 because he heard Kiss stood for, “knights in satans service”. I saw wives dumping out their boxes of Tide because the Procter and gamble symbols was satanic. I turned all of my records backwards and only one had back masking on it. The Beatles while album. It was not satanic it was a car accident and someone yelling “Paul’s dead”.
There was no internet all this garbage spread via gossip. I remember thinking, “isn’t God more powerful than satan? How is backwards music lyrics going to over power my prayers and get me to sacrifice goats to satan”? Haha, it was so real to people back then. Now Ozzy had a tv show…..

By some inferior comments made by Bradly B.. Who Isn't the brightest spark. In regard of the conversation with Derek.. Interesting so far(Lost interest at the 36 minute mark). Back to what I was about to convey. Bradly B.. "Heavy Metal came and gone".. "Not a cultural phenomenon". Do you have half a Clue what you are talking about? No.. No you Don't. Then you go onto say about the Beatles and Elvis.. What you should have said was.. They were your preference now. You are completely Off. Heavy Metal is alive and well.. Maybe to you and your closed minded world that you live in you choose not to listen to Metal.. But I will tell you.. Heavy Metal is a cultural phenomenon and Heavy Metal is alive and well.. And I am a proud Metal head. I ask myself why I'm even wasting my time typing this out when Bradly B will likely never see this comment as he is probably one of those hit and run people.. Meaning? He joins chat for 30 minutes.. Makes a few comments.. Never logs in again and will never bother to read this comments section.
