As a Canadian woman 61 years old I often have remembered over the decades my mother putting rags in my hair as a very little girl and as delighted to find your video good for you thank you
I remember being very young and my mother did this. I hated it and as soon as I could dare I told her I did not want it any more. Then I hit grade 4 and asked her to please do it again. I am 68.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I was the hair director for a Victorian musical and many of my cast members used your method as reference. They did rag curls every night for 14 days straight. Thank you again for being a piece of inspiration!
my mom taught me this when I was 7 and I do this everyday, except my rags are shorter, so I don’t wrap the bottom all the way back to the top. Instead, I tie a knot around the hair at the root, twist around like so and then twist each individual one rag curl into a sort of “cinnamon bun” and tie the ends together. I only use four, so it takes about less than ten minutes once you get used to it, and run my fingers and separate the curls through to create a natural curl look Hope this helps!
When I was little, I had very long hair, and for special occasions, my mother would rag curl my hair. It's very effective and you can sleep on them more comfortably than regular curlers.
This is the tutorial I have been needing for years ! I have always wanted to get natural looking ringlets with no heat and nothing ever worked for me ! Just now I tried it on dry hair for about 2 hours and even then it worked beautifully! Thank you!
My mum used to do this with my hair. If you put half of the rag hanging down over your head, wrap the hair around it then wrap the covering part of the rag from top to bottom and tie at the bottom. Then it´s not bumpy to sleep on x
I’d love to try it out on my own. My mom did my hair in rag curls for our susqecentenial , I wore my great aunt’s old party dress - it had a lot of fine lace and bead work. I looked just like her ( she passed away very young in the early 1900’s influenza epidemic. It was kind of eerie in a way when my great aunt Elenor told me how much I looked like Kathleen. ) the rag curls made it look historically accurate. It was an honor and a privilege to wear the dress and have my hair done that way .
My mom was born in 1938 and her mother used to curl her hair with rag curls when she was 4-5 years old. She said they were very painful to sleep in, but they were the most beautiful ringlets I've ever seen in the pictures. My grandma was a perfectionist. I'm guessing she probably wrapped them up more so they were more on her head rather than hanging down vertically, so that probably made them even harder to sleep on.
Try cutting each strip in half length ways to make the knot at the top thinner. My grandmother used to do my hair in those and it was easier to sleep in. Love that you tried it though.
This video reminded me of my childhood in the 1950’s. My Mum or older sister would put mine and my younger sisters hair in rags on a Saturday night or when there was a special occasion. I notice others have commented that wrapping the opposite way to how you demonstrated gives a more comfortable nights sleep. Of course that also depended on how many rags were put in and how tight they were wrapped. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Kindest regards.
I’ve been into period pieces recently and got inspired by the old curly wigs. Those ringlets are irresistible and I feel like this style is a fun and wearable way to hint at that time. Love it.
Wow, I just uploaded a tutorial for rag curls like these on Wednesday; it's like we read each other's minds! I did mine in two layers: one on top of my head and the other low enough not to get between my head and the pillow. It was comfortable to sleep in, but my curls ended up really poofy and not as tidy as yours. I also did a tutorial where I started wrapping the hair from the ends, and I got looser curls that were mainly curly at the bottom. :-)
My gram used to do these on my hair when I was a little girl.. she passed on from cancer in 2010.. so, tysm for posting this, I've always wanted to know how to do them myself...
I'm a 34 year old Canadian girl, and my mom used to do my hair like this in the 90s. :) I came back to this tutorial because I am being ms Frizzle for Halloween tomorrow! Haha.
Oooh!! Ok, this is very different from every other rag curl vid on YT that basically starts from the bottom and rolls straight up tot eh scalp. Very nice change of pace!! Can’t wait to try it! Thanks!!!
Some people just enjoy being negative. It’s their only form of joy. They have a screw loose somewhere…and some are just jealous (I’d bet those 1,800 and however many since these 3 more years have passed are jealous of her), and they attack everything that makes them feel inferior, (which is everything and everyone, and the first and main trait of a bully-extreme insecurity and jealousy, that’s what bullies are made of, a great thing to know when one wants to deflate a bully… if they call somebody stupid, it’s because they feel stupid; if they call someone ugly, it’s because they feel ugly; if they call someone weak, it’s because they feel weak; and so on), rather than be happy for others. They also have a screw loose, and can’t just enjoy themselves, so they try to drag everyone into their own mire, where they wallow.
I'm so glad this tutorial is still available!! I used your method a few Halloweens ago and it worked beautifully. Doing a similar hairstyle this year 😊 (Goth Victorian doll before, Little Red Riding Hood this year). Thank you!
I've always loved this hairstyle. Ever since I saw a picture of a woman in my social studies text book. I've always wanted to try it but haven't had a reason to lol. They look very cute on you! Thank you for the tutorial :)
Thank you so much for the tutorial!!! I have always loved Victorian rag/sausage curls and wanted to try them. I followed this tutorial years ago with my mother, but they didn't turn out as well. I tried to attempt them again now and they are perfect and beautiful. I was able to use them for my regency outfit and it's amazing. Again, thank you!
When i was 14-15 years old, i used to wear this look at school, which is ridiculous, now that i think of it :D i used to make these curls by twirling my hair around my fingers, strand by strand, and tthe spirals lasted for ever, because my hair is naturally wavy/curly. They looked exactly like they do there with the rag method.
So pretty. I listen to a lot of 19th century audiobooks lol so this is perfect. I love your look it suits you. Now if only someone could come do this for me it would be so relaxing 😌 I’m too lazy !
Hi thank you so much, my son is playing Pirelli in Sweeney Todd tonight and this was the only way that held a curl in his super long hair! *Also straight to the point thanks for no long talk at the beginning😃
Love the Victorian music in the background. My hair is quite curly, but thin and responds well to straightening methods; hopefully this works for me. Thanks so much ♥️
Tip: when you finished forming your rags, pin them to your head and tie a scarf over your head with the rags under the head scarf. This makes sleeping much easier.
these curls seem similar to shirley temple curls. I am the hairstylist for a theatre production set in the 1800's and my director wanted these kinds of curls. Since we don't have the time to do no heat styles, I might do this with a 3/4" curling iron.
My grandmother did my hair like this in the 70’s as I liked my hair this way while I watched Dark Shadows thought I was too young to watch it! LoL I was 5. The show was set in 1752. I have a historical retreat and a Bridgerton Ball in September going to try this . Great regency hairstyle!
This is pretty much how I do my second day hair lol I have curly hair, so if I leave it down in its natural curl on washing day with some setting lotion in, when I get home I dampen it down, brush and put it in rag curls (I usually do 12, and with thicker rags). I also spiral wrap it. In the morning I look like I spent hours under the dryer or with a curling iron in my hands.
My mother used to rag my hair. I was born in 1971 and every event she would do this. I had waist length hair and every single school photo was me with curls lol
Im a male and my hair is perfect ringlets naturally! Its both a blessing and curse! Blessing because they look amazing and i get compliments on them! Curse because people don’t think they are mine and they criticize it or ask me how i do it and what i used
My mother used to do this to my hair, we called it "rolling on rags". My great-grandmother swore it made your hair grow faster (I'm not too sure about this, lol), and you can then wear the curls or brush it out and have very wavy hair. My mom would sit me down and have me hold the end of the rag on top of my head with one hand while she spiraled the rag down and back up, then tied the ends as you did. I think she usually did about six rolls. We never put any products on the hair, just freshly washed and still pretty damp. Rolled it in the evening, and slept on it, then took out the rags the next morning. I have been wanting to do this again but wasn't sure I could do it by myself. After having seen your video, I will have to try it! We always used cotton rags (usually torn from an old pillowcase or sheet), and I think maybe the plain cotton lets your hair dry faster than the stretchy t-shirt material.
Splendid! It's very similar to the method I use, when making curls for my miniature dolls wigs the only difference is that I won't need to wind my hair round a knitting needle as I do for the dolls.
My Mum used to do this on my hair when I was a child. Good memories! Her method was a little different though. She would used smaller rags and roll them up rather than wrap my hair around the rag. It would come out more wavy than ringlet curled.
I grew up this way 40 years ago. Ringlets for days. Thank you and thank you for getting straight to the point I love it. Sometimes my mother would use wet paper bag strips
I am 68 and my grandmother would do this to me when I was a single digit child. I had very thick hair down to my knees. They were fun to do and virtually painless. Now I still have very thick hair but I have dreads past my butt now.
Thank you so much for this video! My grandmother used to do this to us when we were little. By the time I wanted to learn how to do it her hands hurt to much to do it. It's something I want to pass on if I ever have children. I just discovered your channel and I love it! Could you do a tutorial on Helen of Troy?
Looks beautiful! Such a much better outcome than many vids I’ve seen with very inconsistent curls. And brushing it through is definitely a good finishing touch. And you can also curl to the roots, do upper and lower sections, and go high on the upper ones, straight up if possible, or as close to that as possible, and go low on the lower ones, (it will all blend in the end), and possibly avoid having them at face height for sleeping. I think it’s cute both ways, like it is here, and with a whole head of curls to the roots (which could be separated even further)…a bit more time consuming. I like that the ends are tucked in and curled. I really don’t care for when people leave their ends out. It looks weird to have curly hair with 1-3” of straight ends. I don’t get it at all when people do that. The curl should go from whatever starting point, then all the way to the ends. Nicely done, and good tips for a successful and consistent outcome! Thanks! 😊
I wonder if there is a second type of curl that you can doif you sort of pull up the curl closer to your head. My mom says it is a loosed curl. But you did a really beautiful job!!! Love your creativity!
i need my hair to grow out longer but i will try this, my great aunt told me this is how they used to do it in war times. now i finally found a video for it. it turned out very pretty for this lady oh and i have a victorian portrait of a girl with the exact same curls so i presume thats how she wouldve done it
I love the way you show how to do your hair you get straight to the point well done have short hair different lengths can you please show me how to do my hair thankyou Lila
This would have been perfect for Lilian Gish! I was also thinking it would look cool to French twist from the top of your head and then do the rag curl to get those 20s waves into the curls! Thank you for the tutorial!
Remember my Mum doing this to my hair when I was 10. I use to have very thick hair compared to my sisters that frizzed with curlers but rags didn’t fizz my hair. I use to walk in a bouncy way to make my ringlets bounce. When I wasn’t doing that my friends were taking turns patting them in the air.
When I was a bridesmaid this is what the hairdresser did on my hair. It looked so nice but we parted the curls so they weren’t completely defined ringlets
I used o do these back in the 90's growing up, my mom would do that rag curl because my hair was so thick it would just be a smoother way to keep them from going wild. Lol I didn't know it was Victorian though, kool! 😁
I know this is an old video but I would love to see you do it again but with a hair style! Ladies did this to make amazing updos and such ☺️ no one just walked around with hair like this
As a Canadian woman 61 years old I often have remembered over the decades my mother putting rags in my hair as a very little girl and as delighted to find your video good for you thank you
I just did my 16 yr old daughters my nana use to pull rags in my hair sit in the sun n sleep with em I’m 45. But memories come fludding back
I rolled mine..all over my head with strips of sheets...All my brothers friends were using coke, orange juice and Tomato juice cans...
My Mum is 74 and her Mum used to put her hair up in rags. But Mum couldn't remember how it was done. I love the look.
I remember being very young and my mother did this. I hated it and as soon as I could dare I told her I did not want it any more. Then I hit grade 4 and asked her to please do it again. I am 68.
Me too!!! 😊
My Mother used to curl my hair that way. Glad you younger ones are doing it again. You are a beautiful young lady.
Yes!! It’s such a lovely look, and so affordable too!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I was the hair director for a Victorian musical and many of my cast members used your method as reference. They did rag curls every night for 14 days straight. Thank you again for being a piece of inspiration!
My grandmother used to curl my aunt's hair in the depression this way. I've been wanting to figure out how to do it. THANK YOU!!!!!
my mom taught me this when I was 7 and I do this everyday, except my rags are shorter, so I don’t wrap the bottom all the way back to the top. At the root? Or do you mean at the end of the hair?
OMG. I just watched Viv Hair Therapy and she did your tutorial. I didn't think I could do this style with my texture. I love it you both. Thanks
That's where I just came from to watch this too :)
Me too!
Same!
That's how I got here, too. Ms. Viv looked gorgeous!
Same kinda, I was already subscribed to this chick haha
When I was little, I had very long hair, and for special occasions, my mother would rag curl my hair. It's very effective and you can sleep on them more comfortably than regular curlers.
Mine did too! I have a photo of me with my family at a studio taking a family portrait…the photo is in black and white :)
This is the most straightforward, helpful tutorial I've seen on no-heat ringlets. Thank you and BTW your accent is amazing :)
This is the tutorial I have been needing for years ! I have always wanted to get natural looking ringlets with no heat and nothing ever worked for me ! Just now I tried it on dry hair for about 2 hours and even then it worked beautifully! Thank you!
Hi elli mam u r so cutie
My mum used to do this with my hair. If you put half of the rag hanging down over your head, wrap the hair around it then wrap the covering part of the rag from top to bottom and tie at the bottom. Then it´s not bumpy to sleep on x
yep much easier method and you get more curls, also you can do it with paper towels!
That's exactly how my mum used to do my hair when I was a kid!
My gran used to do my hair like this when I was a child
My Mother did this to my hair as well every evening.
Sorry I don't understand what you mean
I’d love to try it out on my own. My mom did my hair in rag curls for our susqecentenial , I wore my great aunt’s old party dress - it had a lot of fine lace and bead work. With this method, I suggest to oil your ends especially if they are damaged because your ends will look dry
Oh, good tip! I have very dry ends, and whenever I do rag curls I brush in a tiny bit of sweet almond oil at the ends.
@@horseenthusiast9903 before or after you let the curls out dry?

Straight to the point and you've got a pleasant voice to listen to.
I'm a 34 year old Canadian girl, and my mom used to do my hair like this in the 90s. :) I came back to this tutorial because I am being ms Frizzle for Halloween tomorrow! Haha.
It looks adorable you look like a doll my mom had dolls with curls like that
Oooh!! Ok, this is very different from every other rag curl vid on YT that basically starts from the bottom and rolls straight up tot eh scalp. Very nice change of pace!! Can’t wait to try it! Thanks!!!
My mom used to wrap my freshly shampooed hair like that when I was a child (1961-1964). She used an old bed sheet and tore it into long strips.
Why would 1800 people given this a thumbs down? She is absolutely beautiful and this is a great method she shared - - - and her hair is gorgeous!!!

Ha ha my mum used this method in the 70s but did not use rags she used torn up strips of JCloth. Great video and your hair looks stunning.
Proving once again - RAG CURLS ARE THE BEST CURLS! Bravo.
I'm so glad this tutorial is still available!! I used your method a few Halloweens ago and it worked beautifully. Doing a similar hairstyle this year 😊 (Goth Victorian doll before, Little Red Riding Hood this year). Thank you!

I've been curious about these rag curls since I watched a movie 4 years ago. That was SO interesting to learn
Tip: when you finished forming your rags, pin them to your head and tie a scarf over your head with the rags under the head scarf. This makes sleeping much easier.
Where has this technique been all my life?
I have the straightest hair in the world and nothing has ever worked so well.
This is game changing!
Thanks for the lesson! I go to American Civil War-era events and needed info on how to style my hair the right way. (1860's Victorian)

This is great no-heat curling! (It's best if you do more than one layer ;) )
Hi sierr mam u r so cut
My grandmother did my hair like this as a kid all the time! Super uncomfortable to sleep in but I loved it!
Thanks for posting! I've always wondered how they curled their hair!!!
I did it, can't wait to untie them tomorrow to see the result
My mother used to do this to my hair, we called it "rolling on rags". My great-grandmother swore it made your hair grow faster (I'm not too sure about this, lol), and you can then wear the curls or brush it out and have very wavy hair. My mom would sit me down and have me hold the end of the rag on top of my head with one hand while she spiraled the rag down and back up, then tied the ends as you did. My mom used to rag curl my hair, in the 50's. Thank you for sharing.
This is definitely one of my favorite channels here on UA-cam. You are just so classy and informative👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
+Renata Morgenstern Thank you so much! :)
yeah I agree :)

I absolutely love ringlet curls! I always had trouble with the ends and wrapping the rag back over the curl when I tried this method in the past.
Thnku so mch. I am trying that first tym at my engangement..so thnks a lot for a helpful video.😍🥰
Thank u so much for trying this method! Please keep trying heatless curling methods and share them with us.
My grandmother and aunt used to give me rag curls when I as a kid ❤️
Thank you so much for this video! My grandmother used to do this to us when we were little. By the time I wanted to learn how to do it her hands hurt to much to do it. It's something I want to pass on if I ever have children. I just discovered your channel and I love it! Could you do a tutorial on Helen of Troy?
Hi clare mam u r so cut and attravtive
Loepsie I am a huge fan of yours .. and the reason is little bit weird but sweet. Love from India❤️
Looks beautiful! Such a much better outcome than many vids I’ve seen with very inconsistent curls. And brushing it through is definitely a good finishing touch.

Nicely done, and good tips for a successful and consistent outcome! Thanks! 😊
it looks very beautiful
Finally, something cool I can do with my long hair! 😁
I get these naturally when my hair becomes greasy and it annoys me too much but this style looks so beautiful on you 💕
I love hair ❤❤❤❤
I wonder if there is a second type of curl that you can doif you sort of pull up the curl closer to your head. My mom says it is a loosed curl. But you did a really beautiful job!!! Love your creativity!
i need my hair to grow out longer but i will try this, my great aunt told me this is how they used to do it in war times. now i finally found a video for it. it turned out very pretty for this lady oh and i have a victorian portrait of a girl with the exact same curls so i presume thats how she wouldve done it
Ty 💕 the good old days, RIP Mom
I saw this on anne with an e and i was so curious how they did this
I love ur hair after curling:D😊

awesome hair style
I love it!!! Soooo gorgeous!!!!
This would have been perfect for Lilian Gish! I was also thinking it would look cool to French twist from the top of your head and then do the rag curl to get those 20s waves into the curls! Thank you for the tutorial!

When I was a bridesmaid this is what the hairdresser did on my hair. It looked so nice but we parted the curls so they weren’t completely defined ringlets
My grandmother did them for me and I loved it but I can never do it correctly
Your voice is so deep .I really like it.
My mum used to do these on me as a child all the time!
Gorgeous.
I just liked this video...... it's too good 👍👍👌👌
Love your voice. And the hair.
I used o do these back in the 90's growing up, my mom would do that rag curl because my hair was so thick it would just be a smoother way to keep them from going wild. Lol I didn't know it was Victorian though, kool! 😁
I love this look
Beautiful . What a pleasure to see
With this hair style you remind me of a porcelain doll. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I can’t wait to try!
Such a nice curly hair I have never seen this type of curly hairs
Yes I try it
These type of curls look way better than the typical overnight curlers method.
Thank you, This is what I have been looking for my whole life, I just didn’t know it. 😉
love this curly hair
It looks really hard
I tried it and I actually works yay
I want to do this!!
I know this is an old video but I would love to see you do it again but with a hair style! Ladies did this to make amazing updos and such ☺️ no one just walked around with hair like this
Agreed. Sometimes I just leave the curls as is, but I actually want to start styling them with accessories too.
