This was recorded for the EARTHSPAN album 1972 but inexplicably not used. Licky then left the band. It's available on a cd called "Tricks of the Senses", a compilation of rarities. There are alternate takes and a couple of gems like this. I love listening to her but it's always with mixed emotions; joy and sadness. I hope she is well and doing fine but it seems unlikely. She was last seen hitchhiking in Arizona 1987, with Robin's hand-painted psychedelic acoustic guitar. Her sister later hired investigators to find her but they came up empty. She's not been seen or heard from by anyone since that time. Sadly, it seems that this lovely woman's life ended badly. Oh, I'm from New Jersey, USA. I always loved seeing the ISB at the Fillmore East in Greenwich Village. ISB always had the best audiences! (The worst were for The Grateful Dead).
Well, greetings gordonviolin. As a ISB devotee of 44 years, I too haven't heard this tune, ever! Am a RW devotee as the years have marched on. When I'm having hard times, Each Moment, Painting Box or Dust Be Diamonds can soften my heart. At my husband's memorial in January, the first song played was "First Girl I Loved". It had to be. Signed, True Blue
Fantastic! As a big (huge) ISB fan, it’s always lovely to stumble upon something I haven’t heard before. Especially a song this beautiful & effectively simple. 🌎💦🔥🌬
love the incredible string band, love this ,love licorice [always in my thoughts], magical song, they did do this on 72,73,tours ,is also radio session ,on across the airwaves wonderful album , so emotive
being a 40plus years fan, I have never heard this lovely song.....thank you for posting...will try to get the CD....any single ISB ladies out there who want to connect with a true-blue RW devotee...also fiddle player......
This is new to me -an ISB fan of (very!) longstanding - beautiful - thank you for posting. "The book of life is open to us There'll be no secrets left between us"
never heard this one beautiful as ever, first time I heard of the stringband was in 1980,I was stacking peat in peeblesshire scotland and someone pointed out a house which had been lived in by them, ive never seen the band but I went to see robin in 1985 magical
The oboe brings The Third Ear Band to mind. I too have never heard this before. The ambience is of the time but the recording sounds contemporary. If it is the Trembling Bells then thankyou to them for the magic. I am old and The Incredible String Band are deep inside ma heid.
I actually know Robin well, and I thought I knew all the ISB songs but never heard this one before! It reminds me of the Third Ear Band but with lyrics and a singer! Amazing!
well hello, what a nice surprise to hear from you ! I am just delighted ! sorry to hear of your husband's passing, hope it was peaceful for him and you. each time I think I have a "favorite" RW song or album, something else great pops up...it's just about all great, isn't it ?...special to me though is Myrrh....and HBD...where are you ? I am in the U.S.....central North Carolina....best wishes, Gordon
Thank you for posting this wonderful recording, do you have any other information about it? I thought I'd heard all the ISB stuff. So wonderful to hear Likky's wonderful voice again.
Yes I'll believe, You're in trouble, Yet I see you as life's lover, How long? (5x), ->x2 Ah the breathing of youth, Secret temple, x2 Open the gates. I trust you, 2x, Yes I'll believe, You're in trouble, Yet I see you as life's lover. How long? x5
I have been a hard core ISB fan since the late 60s, having seen them perform a couple times.. i am questioning whether this is in fact ISB... I never heard this before. But there are tonal qualities, rhythms and the song structure is very atypical of ISB, anyone one have more info about this piece?
It is Robin Williamson paraphrasing Shakespeare from his play, 'As You Like It', i.e. 'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players...'.
Never heard this before! A Likky song, I guess. I had read that in later days she contributed some songs but had never heard any. I just adore the golden days of ISB. Saw them several times, although they lost me a bit in their later Scientology days.
Don't think this is the String Band. I think it is Trembling Bells a Scottish band who do a lot of ISB stuff, often accompanied by Mike Heron and his daughter. They are as you can hear very good. Their version of Maya is if anything even better than the original.
William... What you write about Trembling Bells is correct! I saw them at a small hippie fest in Kent in 2016 When Mike got up and joined in on the first chorus of Maya, It was a real thrill... They were great on their own and really did justice to the ISB songs
How lovely to see so many ISB'ers on here. If only we all lived near each other and could meet up and find kindred spirits amongst us.
I live on the Aland islands. Where do you live?
tennessee,USA. we are everywhere!

Thanks for posting this. I believe it ws written by Likky. It's always good to hear her.
Wow. That Likky was ever-haunting. She is in her best voice here -- sad it was her last recording for the ISB.

So very odd the way that she just disappeared in the desert like that.

Is that an oboe or a shawm?
What a delight, an unheard and beautiful ISB song with Licorice in the lead. Is there more from this album?
The song (written by Lic) was lifted from a compilation album, Tricks of the Senses.
So beautiful😭
Listen to Maya, Robbie sings it and I heard it in my youth. I never forget.
I actually know Robin well, and I thought I knew all the ISB songs but never heard this one before! It reminds me of the Third Ear Band but with lyrics and a singer! Amazing!
liki. she haunts me.

Licorice Allsorts - The most deeply moving chapter from Roses book. 😢
I hope Licorice will be there to sing us all home....
This is the essence if the ISB

Beautiful and thanky....Liki did the right thing: disappeared from the Machine
Never seen some of the photos before
This is beautiful but which song on Earthspan would you remove to put this in it's place? I wouldn't change Earthspan for the world.
these guys brother is the incredible bongo band. it's true. look it up.
Thank you. Allthis world is but a play, be thou the joyful player. Who said that?
It is Robin Williamson paraphrasing Shakespeare from his play, 'As You Like It', i.e. 'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players...'.
Imagine having such good songs that you ... ho hum ... decide not to include this on your record !
if i feel like it, i'll make lyrics in the comments if i cant find it personally on line!

+William Armstrong The Incredible String Band - "Tricks of the Senses" (Rare & Unreleased 1966-1972)
+William Armstrong You can clearly hear it's Licorice's voice ! :)
William...

No, William Armstrong you're wrong. Is the real Incredible String Band with Likky
