@@progger53 Don't know about Renaissance but Clannad went too new age relatively early in their career and stayed there...but their very early stuff is very good
I' ve been searching for this song, its one of my favourite songs, and I listen to a hell of a lot of music. I knew it but not who it was by..finally Ive been able to find out about the group who created it and who it was who sung those sublime vocals. It has to be one of the most incredibly beautiful, musically sophisticated and yet relatively unknown numbers in the history of music. There is so much to rave about, I won't go on anymore only to say thank you for posting it (LadySonja) and thank you Alison O'Donnell for that vocal and all who were part of its creation.
I came across Mellow Candle some fifteen years ago. I think David Tibet (of Current 93) name dropped the band in an interview and so I looked it up and "Sheep Season" was the first song I found and fell in love with it, though I wasn't particularly a fan of the genre. I think it was before the release of Current 93's "Black Ships Ate The Sky" album that features Clodagh Simonds. Nevertheless it highlighted the importance of a shout out/name drop in an interview. I found out about a lot of artists I love through interviews with others. Not just musicians, but writers, painters, film makers.
I just discovered Mellow Candle 3 days ago, and I bought all available songs and have been listening every day! I think they sound like if King Crimson and Fairport Convention had a baby-- just every aspect of folk rock, jazz, and classical music on the same album. Only...... why does this song end so soon?! It could have gone another 20 minutes easy! Thank you!!
Winding up a hillside where the shepards roam Counting their flocks in the gloaming Shining the sea, Winking its light to the froth and the foam. Chilling the air with his shady tread, On came the wolf with surprise Filling his eyes With soft sapless creatures soon to be dead. Hurry the shepard man wizened and olden Go and wave your staff at him He has come to bury you for claiming his fold. Stillness came into the misty meadows Down from the banks to the woodland Clouds gather in skies, Giving their rains into mountains to flow. Hurry the shepard man wizened and olden Go and wave your staff at him He has come to bury you for claiming his fold.
Got the box set of the album a few years back. This song is one of the most beautiful evocative songs Ive ever heard. When the flute comes in it just takes wings. But I couldnt see any credit for who played flute.
irish folk rock with progressive underlay.other irish bands of same ilk dra strangely strange, horslips, mushroom, spud.all big in germany and japan at the time.
If you like MC please give a listen to a most underrated folk sike band that hailed from the fair city of Canterbury in the mid 1970’s and probably the least known of the many high quality important outfits to come out of that most creative and groundbreaking area, the band known as SPIROGYRA
Thanks Lady Sonja. Just when I think that there are no more bands to discover on UA-cam I stumble across something like this. If their album were on iTunes I would already own it, but I will now have to hunt for it. I guess there are two versions of the CD, one with two bonus tracks. Ideally, I would want the bonus tracks, but are they worth passing up on the other version?
What are the songs that the two singers recorded in the late sixties, and that appear as bonus tracks on some versions of the CD? Are there any videos for these?

Music like this no longer exists. I'm glad it once did.
Renaissance and Clannad are still active.

Yes, William was a highly underrated drummer. Gone a long time but never forgotten.

Shirley Collins and the Albion Band led me to Caedmon. Caedmon led me to Midwinter. Midwinter led me to Mellow Candle. Life's good. :)

I agree, no doubt in my mind Spirogyra are the best band of the Canterbury set. Is there a better voice than Barbara Gaskin.
