  • Welcome to another great episode of Past the Wire TV and Past the Wire's podcast, Gate to Wire!
On this episode of Past the Wire TV and Past the Wire's podcast Gate to Wire we welcome one of the best to sit down with one of the best!
Tommy Massis, or Hammer as his friends call him is one of the more successful in the game today. Tommy sits down with his friend Pick 6 King Jonathan Stettin another successful horseplayer in his own right for a frank conversation on how Tommy got into the game, the lessons he learned along the way, and how ultimately to beat the game and earn his living doing so.
Jon and Tommy get into a variety of topics within the sport including computer assisted wagering and sports betting. Of course they also touch on the "now" topic of fixed odds wagering.
Hammer and the Pick 6 King are friends, and they go back aways, but they don't agree on everything and both their perspectives come from knowledge and experience.
One thing they both feel strongly about is the the owners and bettors are fueling the game, and they are the only two groups not guaranteed a paycheck. Like Jon, Hammer knows what it is like to be in the if I don't win I don't eat situation, and that position gives you a very unique position of the Sport of Kings.
It is not often you get two players like this together for a candid and open conversation. You won't want to miss it. If you want to get to know Tommy Hammer Massis here is your chance. You can't get an education like this at any university.

I know Hammer for a lot of years been at the race track with him and one day he told me that I could pick the horses but I didn’t know how to gamble and I stop playing we’re still friends.

That was Excellent! Always love hearing from the Hammer 🔨. He had some Great Points of view and love the Optimism. Too many Gamblers in a Fools Paradise where everything is fair in love and war. Although still nobody wants to talk about the past-posting that plagued the game for 10+years.
Your horse going off at 7-1 crossing the wire paying $6.00. Nobody can survive without knowing the Odds !!!!!!!! Screw that Commingled Talk it’s either PP or Larceny-Period

Corporates allow the sheep to play so long as they lose.Try to put on $10K they will only take $1k and if you win they close your account. Fortunately, in Australia we have the TAB which is strong and supports the industry. The Corporate Bookmakers are only interested in catching the fish and they work the Sports betting big time. The fish bet $100 on Sports Betting for every $1 in racing. We used to have 10 thousand people and 100 Bookies plus the TAB at a midweek race day in the City. Now lucky to have 2 Thousand people and 10 Bookies. People are sitting there with their mobile phones and punting. I’ve been involved with racing for over 50 Years as an owner and punter and enjoy racing and love the horses. I might bet on 1 or 2 races on the day for minimum exposure and maximum return on the investment and will not touch any other form of gambling. Really enjoyed listening to both of you, as you are both old school. Woodbine is an enjoyable track, although it pales to our main race courses here in Australia.

True story for Hammer. I live in Melbourne Hammer, however, I have also lived in Toronto. I took my wife on Queens Plate day to Woodbine 1970/71. Now, she has always been a $2 punter, even today with our own horses, she is happy to collect the prize money. Back to the story. We are leaving before the 2nd last race to beat the crowd when my wife looks up at the board showing the field and sees this name and said, I like that horse number whatever, I said it’s 80/1 and we’re leaving, she replied, I like the name as it’s sort of Irish and would like to have a bet. Ok, go ahead, and pull out $50 to go and bet the horse. Needless to say it won and no she kept my $50.00 that I gave her. I can’t tell you how many time she has done that over the years at random. She also wins at the Pokies (slots) while I won’t touch them. If You feel like visiting Melbourne and attend the races, you won’t regret it. Australia is without doubt the greatest racing country in the world. Great horses, great Prize Money and fantastic race courses. Based on what you said, you would enjoy the Provincial meetings just as much as the big city meetings. Remember, we have an average of 3 Race meetings in every State and every day, all year round. No winter snow here mate.

The gambling industry needs the social gamblers who enjoy the day while losing. They go to work the next day and tell the story about the one they just missed. 97% lose so the industry can pay the bills and we professionals can make a profit.

In horse racing you have to beat the takeout, breakage, information cost, drug trainers and cheating jockeys/trainers. If 5-7% were winning(no chance) horse racing would be much more popular. Much more.
