  • A few things to consider when selecting a handheld GMRS radio. These are the radios I've selected and the process that went into choosing them. Your criteria may be different, but the principles may apply.

I have some of the same radios:
    - you forgot the best feature of the T600s- the belt clip turns into a whistle! That sounds stupid until you get caught out in the water by the water cops without a whistle! At the last second I recalled the belt-clip whistle on my T600 and saved myself a ticket!
It also has both a white light and a red light. The white light also blinks automatically when the radio falls into the water, and the red light helps preserve one’s night vision.
    -I have a Baofeng UV82 instead of the UH5, but it’s similar
    - I also have a Baofeng UV9g, which works very well, but it does require a special cable for programming it via computer (which it came with).
I got a GMRS license because it allows everyone in my family to use my call sign. I plan on getting my ham license at some point, but GMRS is a better fit for me at the moment, especially as we have a bunch of repeaters here in the Harrisburg, PA region.
    Good video!

I totally forgot about the whistle lol. I see the UV 9G in my not too distant future 😊

@@beingtimcampbell7208 I think you’ll be happy with it. The only thing about it that I don’t like is the inability to charge it via USB-C. It still uses a cradle. I have been told that this is to maintain it’s waterproof rating, but our T600s manage to use USB charging, so that excuse seems a bit flimsy. But still, it’s a full power waterproof radio for less than $50, so I suppose a few negatives are to be expected!

You should also check out the Radioddity GM-30. It’s strictly GMRS, but a really good radio. Can’t wait for you compare open field distances.

I definitely want to try one of those, I’ve heard good things. I just got a Baofeng UV-9G yesterday. It’s GMRS specific as well
