This is the absolute best tutorial I have ever seen for the Harai Tsurikomi Ashi, either live in dojo or on UA-cam. Thanks very much for this, Travis.
Wow, thank you! That means a lot!
Also, illegal. 🤷♂️
@@Syrjis86 How is the Harai Tsurikomi Ashi illegal?
@@bronstet sorry, it's not. Stepping on the foot however, is.
@@Syrjis86 no it is not
I just love all your semi-legal tricks! Gonna try them all when judo restarts: this footsweep, the grip where you take inside the sleeve, the grip break where you shoot with the elbow... This is all great stuff!
Not only an exceptional fighter but also a fine teacher. The breakdown of techniques and explanations are so helpful and clear. Thank you Travis 🙏🏻
"I like to be in winning position when I am practicing" lol
😆😉
I was thinking the same but lose all the time lol
😂
Another great tip from a Judo expert. Very clear, concise instruction with no "umms" or "aahhhs". I already have one of your videos, love it. You are my go to for video instruction! Thank you for helping us.
Awesome, thank you! That means the world to me! Thank you for all the support!
This is beautiful. What I like is how you orient the whole action throughout the video so we can see from different angles what is where, it gives a good understanding of the space and center of mass, and timing. Very good!
Beautiful technique Sensei Travis, the details are impeccable. Nothing less from a legendary American judoka.
Wow, thank you! That means a lot.
Wow! What an excellent video! Thank you. You just made me realize something really important about my stand up game that I was missing.
Fantastic! I'm glad you found some value!
This is BRILLIANT. He made a very difficult technique to learn, easy to teach.
I've watched this video several times and seems that I learn something new every time I watch 👍
I'm glad your able to always find something new!
Stepping on an opponents foot is highly underrated. It’s the first dirty tactic you’ll learn in boxing usually by accident. Either you’re going to have your foot stepped on in an exchange possibly with you getting knocked down because as you tried to get out of range you couldn’t Or you’re going to score a knockdown because you accidentally stepped on the other guys foot as you threw your combo. After that it’s not always an accident. Most yokels have no idea and the first reaction if you’re not used to it is for them to fall to the ground.
Super easy tactic. I like this. This on the other hand is a very nasty sweep.
I’ve always liked sweeps that sweep both feet our from under. A much harder fall. They won’t spring back up.
nice
Yeah I actually remember learning the whole step on somebody's foot and push them to make them lose their balance back in elementary. Of course, it was nowhere near as technical as you or the video describes. Frankly, it wasn't even with the intention to apply it for any fights but just me and my friends being jerks to each other, lol.
I can't wait to try this! Thanks for sharing
Sooo many tips and techniques to try and master ! Awesome.
For really easy to understand, great teaching and nice technic
Great tutorial Travis. We just learned and worked on this move in our last class. Thank you
Great breakdown of this throw Travis!
super genius! teach us techniques that the professional judoka doesnt want to!
cheers
Great demonstration.
Love it. Many thanks for posting this, Travis, and for all of your other videos, too.
I learned it in a compilation it worked against a double leg and I pretty much lost it afterwards. Thank you so much Travis. I can't wait to apply it in randori
His tutorials are great he's an awesome sensi .
Underrated channel
Great pointers, clear explanation, thank you for sharing this technique!
Great technique...can't wait to try it when we do sweeps next practice.....
What grips would you use for a nogi version of this one? This is just amazing
Beautiful sweep
Thanks!
We need more videos
Sneaky & unexpected move. I like it!
excellent. perfect details.
Haven't looked through the comments yet, but it might interest someone: In chinese Shuai Jiao there is a move called Ji Zhuang, which looks very similiar but uses slightly different footwork. It's final execution is not so much a powerful sweep as seen here, but more to break balance and to bring the uke to the ground.
I'm sure these two can be exchanged to some degree, very nice to see the similiarities. We always say: Same concept, different tradition.
Cheers
Keep that thing chong nonsense out of here. This is real fighting.
Wouldnt the opponent be framing with (in this case) right arm causing you to not be able to slide across his body to get your foot in place?
Very impressive I love this one!
Glad you like it!
wow perfect!!

How would you do this with no gi? Clinch whizzer on the right?
Great technique! What is your left grip doing during the sweep?
It's actually helping with the lift and to keep tension with my partner.
Travis Stevens thank you, I appreciate your ability to bridge Judo and Jiu Jitsu, very helpful!
Love footsweeps! Poetry in motion... Sadly for me it's mostly I move to style on an opponent that I can beat. I do love this entry! Gotta try it after the Coronapocalypse.
Let me know how it goes!
Super nice!!
I loved this!
this is super!
Love it !
AWESOME.THANKYOU
I would never do such a thing! It was just an accident. And the other time. That other time too. Oops, did I do that again?
Did travis become the coach of the U.S. olympic team at one point. Uhm, or am i over remembering because so did someone from bushidokan karate if i remember.
great details, can't wait to drill it !
Can't wait to hear how it goes!!! It's a fun one to practice.
Can this be done from over-under in no-gi?
Yeah, grab the neck and pull down instead of gi.
Could you break your opponent ankle if they do t move with it
Definitely. Don't listen to this guy. It's dirty Judo and just means you can't get a proper Okuri Ashi Harai. Wonder if he knees his partners in the balls as he's doing his entry into uchi mata.
which ties would you use in NoGi? Or would you not even attempt this?
thanks for this!
No problem!
Can you do this in no gi?
Superb!
Thanks a lot!
The John Bassano / Steve Macco special
Just hope it won't get nerfed by IJF like they did with the reverse Seoi Nage.
Awesome
this is beautiful
Me before watching this: Judo is a peaceful sport😌
Me after: ,,
Nice stuff
Thanks Rikson!
would it be possible to do this no gi? cant drill it right now cuz of c*vid but wanted to hear thoughts on it
Possible, but difficult, there are more appropriate sweeps for no gi :-)
If I am going for a De Ashi Barai and I miss the timing, would this be the next best transition?
Been doing judo and jits for 6 months now and all I watch is Travis' instructionals and all his performances. Loving it! Shout out from South Africa Mr Stevens!
Thanks mate. Would you consider demonstrating or at least explaining this technique for an r v l situation? Sorry, just being greedy since l'm a lefty!
I’m a lefty judoka. The principle is the same. When they put their right foot forward, just step forward with left toe where Sensei Stevens showed in the video. Your left hand can be on their lapel on their sleeve. you are forcing them to bear your weight on that side. You step your right foot “courtsey “ step behind your left foot. Extend leg dead straight and use your foot like a hockey stick to lift the back of their Achilles’ tendon of the ground as you pull their sleeve or collar down to the ground. They trip over your extended leg and fall to ground. We call it the “sticker”.
@@yourjeepguy9514 Thanks mate. Appreciate you taking the time.
@@kentburgin8192 we may be lefties, but we have rights too!
Wow 🤩
it's very cool but i'm hesitant to do stuff that is a breach of etiquette in a fighting sport, like literally stepping on toes. Am worried about blowback from pissed off people who even when they're not pissed off like to do arm bars right up to the point where my arm might break before I have a chance to tap.
Great, detailed instructions! Is this a kosoto gari or a de ashi harai?
Okuri Ashi Harai
Is that stepping technique legal im competitions?
Yep! 100% allowed
According to referees, no.
No....but he would whine that it wasn't intentional if they did call him on it I'm sure.
intentionally injuring an opponent is not permitted. Punching, kicking, and other strikes are not allowed. Touching the opponent's face is not allowed. Attacking joints other than the elbow is not allowed. Head dives are not permitted. There is a high risk of injury to your opponent...doing this in my view means you don't care and it's intentional. Also, the ankle is a joint.
Nice sweep, but you need to show the full technique at full or half speed at the beginning before you start breaking it down. It helps the student visualize the final product before you start explaining it.
Not on a video. For videos the watcher can just rewind
@3:24 Demo
Wow.. 👍👍👍
If you want to hear Travis instruct the foot sweep when he’s drunk, play the video at 0.5x speed
What is it called in Japanese?
Okuri Ashi Harai
Okuri ashi barai(harai) in Japanese
모두걸기 in Korean
is this 100% legal?
Can you do a John Wick throw?
What's a john wick throw?
@@TravisStevensgrappling pick any throw from the movie, I don’t know the judo verbiage but I would love to see how it’s done.
It’s almost as if he does an inner reap but i can’t tell.
The character winds up going to the ground with the bad guy.
Wait, so is this a de ashi or an okuri?
It's a foot sweep
@@ericr2617 you should take three seconds to google what de ashi barai and okuri ashi barai are.
Depends on how the foot is drawn. If foot is drawn in front of uke: De ashi. If foot is drawn into ukes other foot: okuri. If foot is drawn behind ukes supporting foot (highly possible with this as uke will likely try to draw the foot away) harai tsurikomi.
Note: harai tsurikomi ashi is considered one of judo's most difficult techniques.
@@dan8085 You should take three seconds to look at the title of this video and see it says "FOOT SWEEP".
@@ericr2617 Both de ashi and okuri are foot sweeps, you blathering imbecile.
Grab my arm...
Other arm...
No ,my other arm!
Looks like a good way to break your patners ankle.
Clásic japanese
You just cant beat a classic.
Arthur Murray dance studio
You can actually step on a person’s foot and just push them over backwards with the greatest of ease, but if you do not release the pressure on their foot they will break their foot when they fall backwards onto the ground onto their back. This is Ninja stuff, not judo technique.
This is shit Judo. Means your technique sucks and you have to resort to shit like this in hopes of getting ippon.
@@ronin2167 Of course you cannot do this in a judo tournament or even in sparring. It is a self defense tactic I learned when I was practicing Krav Maga, which is a special self defense system created by the Israeli military. There is no ippon in Krav Maga. There is only life or death.
I am not so sure about that, but I guess,Judo changed o lot .After I saw Sensei Travis Stevens know s what he is talking about s.😢

How applicable this is in children judo? Seams pretty dangerous
I think injury prone waza going at speed.!!
If you tried that on me I would counter you with Tai toshi. JR 5 dan
this is going to piss people off lolz
LMAO
🌈 🇮🇹👍🏼
Kamaru usman watching this
Ye I beat here
Ps: my school bully
Opps she got blood on her nose
The I got...
you can really mess up someone's rhythm. also good with any sized opponent. anyone wanna come over and get swept?
LOL
That's not a sweep. It's pinning the foot to the ground and a good way to break someone's ankle.
Dee da dee. A guy showing how to step on another dudes foot 317 times in a 4 min video. Bravo sir! Judo is dead. Show what happens once youve landed on the Ground with a bjj black belt.
That's dangerous, it's easy to damage your ankle or knee when you fall.
poor assistant 😢
Hehehehehe👀
Hmmm. Stepping on people's feet is 100% old school grappling for WARFARE, but you should not be teaching it even for RANDORI. You can seriously maim people by doing this if just one thing goes wrong.
Old school jujitsu techniques have a great deal of stepping on people's feet and then twisting their heads or the rest of their bodies... very easy to seriously injure the joints of the legs doing that!
Naughty

Dirty. Don't do this. Actually disappointed/embarrassed/angry that this is even a video from TS.
In video voice is very low. Please increase the voice.
Interesting. I'll make a note on that for future videos.
stepping on the foot is a legit technique used in boxing. its dirty and not legal at all, but guys do it all the time to score easy knockdowns.
