The Lost Valley and Seeds of Memories are NOT harvest moon games. Natsume just kept the title to trick people into buying them. Story of Seasons is the rightful sequel to the Harvest Moon series.
For the sake of technicality, those two games are literally Harvest Moon games, but no longer part of the Bokujo Monogatari series (might have spelled that wrong), at which point the title Story of Seasons take over (for the English translation anyway). So basically, Natsume owns the Harvest Moon name, but Marvelous holds the marvelous heart of the Bokujo series.
You're wrong, they are still very much Harvest Moon games. Natsume just split away from Marvelous. They may have never developed any HM games before the split, but they have always owned the name. Their HM games still share the same basic idea and gameplay as well. Now, I just know that someone reading this will eventually respond and tell me that the Story of Seasons games are way better, so let me just stop you right here if you're that person. You are totally missing my point. I'm not saying that Natsume's games are better (or even equally as good) as Marvelous' games, just that they are every bit as legitimate.
I'd have to say Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life is my favorite. The music brings me such nostalgic feelings and was one of my favorite GameCube games. I remember coming home from school and playing for hours. When I found out about the girl version I saved up and bought that one since the original was my brother's. I'm hoping they re-release it on the Nintendo switch virtual GameCube console so I can play it again! I hope they make a game similar to AWL in the future as well. Great video. I also loved Magical Melody, which my sister gave me after graduating from middle school (because she knew I loved AWL which she also gave me two years prior for Christmas).
Another Wonderful Life is my favorite too. I have such warm memories of sitting in the living room floor in the dark on a snowy night playing wrapped up in a blanket. I really want it rereleased on the Switch but I’d LOVE a remake like they did with Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town 💜

Nice video, but you forgot to mention one very important thing. Bokujo Monogatari, the true name of this series in Japan, and got the Natsume/Marvelous Interactive shenanigans not entirely correct. Natsume and Marvelous Interactive didn't split because of different vision about the series' future, but because Marvelous merged with another company (I forgot the company's name). The company Marvelous merged with owns a subsidiary company known as XSeed Games, and Marvelous got full control of XSeed after the merge. Marvelous then decided it would be better to have XSeed localize Bokujo Monogatari to the west through XSeed Games, since it saves more time and money since they practically own XSeed, but XSeed had to create a new name for the series in the west since Natsume still hold the rights to the Harvest Moon games, and that's how the name Story of Seasons was born. However, it's Story of Seasons that actually belong in the main Harvest Moon series, and not the Harvest Moon games since The Lost Valley, since Story of Seasons belong to the Bokujo Monogatari series in Japan, while Natsume' s Harvest Moon games are their own series

HM64 is my favorite. Followed by Back to Nature. I remember being super psyched for A Wonderful Life. Followed news about it and posted in forums non stop. But ultimately I was disappointed by it. It seemed unfinished in some ways. I never beat it, because like you said it can become boring with nothing to do after several years. I think I made it to the first 3 year chapter before I fell off. Which is too bad because the overarching story was really touching. I feel like Magical Melody is probably the best one, just with the huge world, interesting characters and the fact that you can buy land and have multiple farming areas. I'm super excited for Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town. That set of characters are my favorite. I probably won't be able to resist marrying Karen again, as usual. I wish they hadn't changed the look of the characters so much, but whatever. Just a few more days! I started playing the series with HM64 when I was 11 or 12. Never thought I'd still be playing them in my thirties :P
You messed it up a bit. XSeed has been around for a long time, but since Marvelous had an in house translator in them, they decided to not use Natsume anymore.
Grew up with 64, Save the Homeland, and MFoMT. Gotta say though, watching my cousin play A Wonderful Life always made me a bit jealous and that game is weirdly nostalgic for me despite not having played it. I would play MFoMT on my GBA and she would play AWL on her gamecube. I was always a little jealous because while MFoMT was a very solid game, the world of AWL seemed so much more fun and charming.
I'm kinda disappointed that this video didn't come out just a little later, and that it wasn't just a little more comprehensive. I'm fairly new to the Harvest Moon series as a whole. I'd have liked to see how Story of Seasons Trio of Towns compared, as well as the Rune Factory games.

Harvest moon: a wonderful life will always be one of my favorites because it was the first game in the series I played and it has so much nostalgia. But a new beginning is by far my favorite game in the series, I probably have over 500+ hours in that game spread over multiple playthroughs
Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns was my first Harvest Moon game and I still love it so much, even if it does have a few things to complain about. Like the Harvest Goddess's reason to blocking out the tunnel and the cringey trash talk between the mayors.

@@Grace-hi6mx SoS: Trio of Towns has a similar vibe to Tale of Two Towns. Another good one is the first Story of Seasons. Those are good ones on the 3DS but if you want ones on other consoles, a huge fan favourite is definitely Animal Parade.

Yeah 64 was my first one, I fell in love almost immediately lol. I'm pretty sure it was the first ever life sim type game that I played and it started a lifelong love.
and now natsume has made the same game with some changes and publish it. Seeds of memories, skytree village and light of hope have almost the same town, yes, light of hope is bigger but that's it. They didn't even bother to change the sprites from skytree village to light of hope. Overall, for me natsume's "harvest moon" lost all the things I loved in the games, but Story of seasons still has them
Story of seasons is the real harvest moon harvest moon now the only thing that’s the same is the logo and name. One is the true game one (sos) and the new harvest moon feels like a cheap mobile game 5 years after this video was made.
Only because people weren't even designating Waifu's until around 2002-ish on the internet (possibly later, I'm very sure Azumanga Daioh popularized the phrase waifu among anime fans around then, and it began to pop up) Rest assured, I had the conversation with people (without using those words) about harvest moon 64 though. My favorite will always be Karen. They will always love the wrong ones. It's sad, but it's hard to change a mind. Some people just don't want to admit they were wrong, too. Karen is by far the best - obviously - and I have a sneaking suspicion that the other girls were all whores; maybe I'm biased.
I’m not sure if there were, but does hating the rival of the certain bachelor/bachelorettes counts? For example, Gray is incredibly popular amongst the female/HMBTNFG/MFoMT players, they all hated his love interest, Mary.
This series underwent a lot of experimentation, adding and removing aspects of the game all the time, as well as changing the art style between 2D and 3D back and forth. Oddly enough, the original SNES Harvest Moon was one of the most well balanced and had gotten most of the key concepts right.
I loved A wonderful life. It was my first harvest moon game and also the music and characters made me fall in love. The first time I beat the game I cried cause I didn't know you died and the game would end.
Back to Nature is my fave. A Wonderful Life is the last "decent' game. The games always had a "fairy tale" like atmosphere about them, but were still rooted in semi realism. Post Wonderful Life, they all look like pure fantasy to the nth degree.

Another Wonderful Life was the first I played, but I had no idea it was so late in the series. I thought it was one of the firsts because it was so different.
Despite Harvest Moon DS/DS Cute having awful stories and same graphics as FOMT, I actually really enjoyed it and it's definitely one of my favourite games. I like the idea of having to gather at least 60 harvest sprites to get married & save the goddess, it forces the player to work for goals and use all the mechanics in the game making it more enjoyable. Even though the boy version was a lot more buggy & collecting the sprites were unfortunately easier, the girl version that I always played was really difficult to get 60 and wow that was rewarding. The style and well known characters felt very old school and I hope natsume decides to go back to the rustic vibe other than going insanely "anime/childish" in the lost valley and seeds of memories. (Personally I just dislike the new style) Also in HMDS & Cute the little mini games like fighting your rivals in your dog house and hilarious things you could do like poisoning & killing the entire town just made it so unique and funny. Plus the whole mining aspect?! AMAZING!! I remember I'd always compete with my friends with how far we can go down in the mine & it was such a fun challenge.
Harvest moon save the homeland is the best harvest moon game ever I can say the game has the best graphics in the entire series and the music is great. Well the map is so little and have a short gameplay and before you can achieve 9 endings you wouldnt see winter coming cuz i always ended up in autumn or summer. But its an old games anyway

Well Put together video. I'm a big fan of the series from way back on the first Game Boy Version. I say my most beloved Harvest Moon game would be Back to Nature as it being the one that I spent the most time on and gave me generally the most joy. But I would say A Wonderful Life is a close second. As it is looking I just picked up A New Beginning and Loving that maybe even more than A Wonderful Life. One Question though why isn't Innocent Life or Rune Factory Included. I thought Innocent Life SE was a good Game. Never tried rune factory though.
I enjoyed this video as someone who has never played Harvest Moon but am thinking I might wanna try it out. But I realized you neglected to mention the one game I'm thinking of playing, which is Harvest Moon My Little Shop for the Nintendo Wii. It's a Wiiware game but still thought you'd mention it. It's not a side game like Rune Factory. But I enjoyed the video.
I have 2 favorites and I go back and forth between which one I like better, but my two favorites are definitely Friends Of Mineral Town and Animal Parade!!!
Yeah, I was always baffled by the character changes in Back to Nature and reuse of Harvest Moon 64 graphics, though I know that was because it was initially supposed to be a simple remake of it until the creator left for a week and everyone apparently decided to mess around instead of doing what they were told. The end result is losing a lot of what made Harvest Moon 64 amazing to me and the characters inevitably remained in their rewritten forms for their final appearances. A Wonderful Life is technically the last one with the full involvement of the creator, hence why it was so original like previous entries. Every subsequent title after this one would go on to be way more unoriginal and the "Harvest" family line would cease to exist. Well, outside Japan anyway. But really, that was the saddest loss for me, alongside the soundtracks becoming more mediocre. The best games under the hands of MARVELOUS was Magical Melody, scoring just a little below Harvest Moon 64 and it does have the effort thrown into it. Though then again, the creator of the series did assist in its development. It's a shame the controls are so bad. Still, this is the only time that MARVELOUS really had gotten close to Harvest Moon 64 on their own, as the creator only assisted in the design of the game, and technically the story to an extent since it feels like a 3D reboot of the first game. And of course, Harvest Moon DS, being riddled with glitches, was eventually patched by the creator so that it became a way better title to own, though just make sure you look for the right ID number when buying it. And it also used assets from his previously developed Mineral Town, though I didn't mind this and the game has a very fun appeal to it because of this. Really only wish it let you visit Mineral Town and it may have been my favorite in the series. I felt like this game simply brought more life into A Wonderful Life, like how Mineral Town helped me appreciate Back to Nature more. Again, another effort by MARVELOUS I have to appreciate since the creator once again only had minimal involvement once more outside the reusing of his stories. The 2D versions of both of these games just felt better to me than their original counterparts, though at least A Wonderful Life is entirely original so I can come back to it every now and then, well I don't really want to play Back to Nature ever again. Would also be nice for DS Cute to come out on Wii U Virtual Console someday uncensored, though I doubt that will ever happen since we never even got Harvest Moon DS in the first place. The series' best titles will always be between the first and Magical Melody to me. Animal Parade was an exception in this up until I found out that the creator was heavily involved with it and then realized it links more closely with the original games in that regard in terms of effort. Perhaps, the best effort of MARVELOUS to me now is Story of Seasons, since changing the name finally allowed it to feel separate from the games I love and I can appreciate it better now. The Natsume serious needs a lot of work before it will ever be likable to me, though I can't deny Skytree Village has a better art style than Story of Seasons. I sure hope Yasuhiro Wada, ConcernedApe or both team up with Natsume someday so their brand name has more respect toward it. Heck, if they got both of those guys, MARVELOUS would be in serious trouble, but even with just one of them, their games would be noticeably better. Cause it seems like Natsume has tried over a few times now to make a decent one and they all seem to have a good core and always fall flat on their limited offerings.
My favorite is...Harvest Moon (SNES). I know that the other Harvest Moon games had other things that made it more better & it's been claimed by most fans that Harvest Moon 64 is the best game in the franchise, but there are reasons why Harvest Moon (SNES) is my favorite. 1) It's the 1st Harvest Moon game I played / owned 2) It was released in 1997, (2 years past the SNES's expiration year (Just like Kirby's Dreamland 3) meaning the graphics & music were pushed past the SNES's limits. 3) In my honest opinion. A great place to start for newcomers to the franchise. Because it's so simple, beginners will find it easier to play & enjoy before moving on to the other Harvest Moon games. So I highly recommend you play Harvest Moon (SNES) as your starting point, for all you newbies out there. 4) Nostalgia. SWEET😋, SWEET😋, NOSTALGIA😍
My favorite in the series was AnWL, in every way except the bachelors, I think they could have picked better bachelors. The bachelorettes in AWL and AWLSE are examples of that. Sure most of the guys in forget-me-not were married, but there was an easy fix imo. Make the inn slightly bigger, extend the amount of time you have to marry a bit, and add travelling bachelors (new characters) who come and go from and to the inn, according to some kind of "schedule". This could also make another destiny for your kid, like taking over the farm, athlete, etc. Where your kid is a traveller. Also I wish the feature to have a daughter instead of a son from AWLSE was in AnWL.

my first exposure to harvest moon was HM DS, and i also picked up HM DS cute later. i liked both games and they really got me into the harvest moon series. I even went back later and picked up HM friends of mineral town/more friends of mineral town, and magical melody. I played almost all of the other harvest moon games from 2008 to now. i think i had the most enjoyment playing HM animal parade. the world was so big and the characters has different personalities. I loved the 2 male and 2 female character player options. the controls for the Wii were simple and i loved the graphics. the number of bachelors and bachelorettes and all there different personalities were so interesting and unique. 10/10 loved it.
I still liked Harvest Moon: Friends of mineral town, so much secrets to discover, no matter how much you played it, you'll definitely have a goal to do list. Like he said, it's like a fan base and really fast paced game with lots of things to do, but in time you'll get bored of it. Good job for a 2003 game. To be honest i thought it was a 2007 game. Anyways also i though the developers were going to create another game with similarities like that game, but while they were so busy with the gameplay, that they forgot about how much people loved the classic graphic with lots of secrets, giving a multiplayer might be a next level gameplay if you ask me, if they could figure sth out. But too late, since they departed

"Story of Seasons" was the name of the series i Japan all along. And Mavelous didn't create Xseed to publish the games. Xseed has existed for many years, but yes they agreed to publish "Story of Seasons" in the west :)

for me the real harvest moon always the one made by marvelous ... so when they leave natsume, for me natsume harvest moon is already dead ... coz natsume is just like their translator which own the loyalty of the name harvest moon, and shamelesly using that name to deceive player who dont know to play their shitty game (lost valley, that mobile game, etc) the real developer game now change their name to story of season which is good

Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns was my first Harvest Moon game and I still love it so much, even if it does have a few things to complain about. Like the Harvest Goddess's reason to blocking out the tunnel and the cringey trash talk between the mayors.

@@Grace-hi6mx SoS: Trio of Towns has a similar vibe to Tale of Two Towns. Another good one is the first Story of Seasons. Those are good ones on the 3DS but if you want ones on other consoles, a huge fan favourite is definitely Animal Parade.

Yeah 64 was my first one, I fell in love almost immediately lol. I'm pretty sure it was the first ever life sim type game that I played and it started a lifelong love.

and now natsume has made the same game with some changes and publish it. Seeds of memories, skytree village and light of hope have almost the same town, yes, light of hope is bigger but that's it. They didn't even bother to change the sprites from skytree village to light of hope. Overall, for me natsume's "harvest moon" lost all the things I loved in the games, but Story of seasons still has them
Story of seasons is the real harvest moon harvest moon now the only thing that’s the same is the logo and name. One is the true game one (sos) and the new harvest moon feels like a cheap mobile game 5 years after this video was made.

Rest assured, I had the conversation with people (without using those words) about harvest moon 64 though. My favorite will always be Karen. They will always love the wrong ones. It's sad, but it's hard to change a mind. Some people just don't want to admit they were wrong, too.
Karen is by far the best - obviously - and I have a sneaking suspicion that the other girls were all whores; maybe I'm biased.

This series underwent a lot of experimentation, adding and removing aspects of the game all the time, as well as changing the art style between 2D and 3D back and forth. Oddly enough, the original SNES Harvest Moon was one of the most well balanced and had gotten most of the key concepts right.

I loved A wonderful life. It was my first harvest moon game and also the music and characters made me fall in love. The first time I beat the game I cried cause I didn't know you died and the game would end.
Back to Nature is my fave. A Wonderful Life is the last "decent' game. The games always had a "fairy tale" like atmosphere about them, but were still rooted in semi realism. Post Wonderful Life, they all look like pure fantasy to the nth degree.

Despite Harvest Moon DS/DS Cute having awful stories and same graphics as FOMT, I actually really enjoyed it and it's definitely one of my favourite games. I like the idea of having to gather at least 60 harvest sprites to get married & save the goddess, it forces the player to work for goals and use all the mechanics in the game making it more enjoyable. Even though the boy version was a lot more buggy & collecting the sprites were unfortunately easier, the girl version that I always played was really difficult to get 60 and wow that was rewarding. The style and well known characters felt very old school and I hope natsume decides to go back to the rustic vibe other than going insanely "anime/childish" in the lost valley and seeds of memories. (Personally I just dislike the new style) Also in HMDS & Cute the little mini games like fighting your rivals in your dog house and hilarious things you could do like poisoning & killing the entire town just made it so unique and funny. Plus the whole mining aspect?! AMAZING!! I remember I'd always compete with my friends with how far we can go down in the mine & it was such a fun challenge.

I can say the game has the best graphics in the entire series and the music is great. Well the map is so little and have a short gameplay and before you can achieve 9 endings you wouldnt see winter coming cuz i always ended up in autumn or summer. But its an old games anyway

Well Put together video. I'm a big fan of the series from way back on the first Game Boy Version. I say my most beloved Harvest Moon game would be Back to Nature as it being the one that I spent the most time on and gave me generally the most joy. But I would say A Wonderful Life is a close second. As it is looking I just picked up A New Beginning and Loving that maybe even more than A Wonderful Life. One Question though why isn't Innocent Life or Rune Factory Included. I thought Innocent Life SE was a good Game. Never tried rune factory though.

But I realized you neglected to mention the one game I'm thinking of playing, which is Harvest Moon My Little Shop for the Nintendo Wii. It's a Wiiware game but still thought you'd mention it. It's not a side game like Rune Factory. But I enjoyed the video.

Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life Is My Favorite
Yeah, I was always baffled by the character changes in Back to Nature and reuse of Harvest Moon 64 graphics, though I know that was because it was initially supposed to be a simple remake of it until the creator left for a week and everyone apparently decided to mess around instead of doing what they were told. The end result is losing a lot of what made Harvest Moon 64 amazing to me and the characters inevitably remained in their rewritten forms for their final appearances.
A Wonderful Life is technically the last one with the full involvement of the creator, hence why it was so original like previous entries. Every subsequent title after this one would go on to be way more unoriginal and the "Harvest" family line would cease to exist. Well, outside Japan anyway. But really, that was the saddest loss for me, alongside the soundtracks becoming more mediocre.
The best games under the hands of MARVELOUS was Magical Melody, scoring just a little below Harvest Moon 64 and it does have the effort thrown into it. Though then again, the creator of the series did assist in its development. It's a shame the controls are so bad. Still, this is the only time that MARVELOUS really had gotten close to Harvest Moon 64 on their own, as the creator only assisted in the design of the game, and technically the story to an extent since it feels like a 3D reboot of the first game.
And of course, Harvest Moon DS, being riddled with glitches, was eventually patched by the creator so that it became a way better title to own, though just make sure you look for the right ID number when buying it. And it also used assets from his previously developed Mineral Town, though I didn't mind this and the game has a very fun appeal to it because of this. Really only wish it let you visit Mineral Town and it may have been my favorite in the series. I felt like this game simply brought more life into A Wonderful Life, like how Mineral Town helped me appreciate Back to Nature more. Again, another effort by MARVELOUS I have to appreciate since the creator once again only had minimal involvement once more outside the reusing of his stories.
The 2D versions of both of these games just felt better to me than their original counterparts, though at least A Wonderful Life is entirely original so I can come back to it every now and then, well I don't really want to play Back to Nature ever again. Would also be nice for DS Cute to come out on Wii U Virtual Console someday uncensored, though I doubt that will ever happen since we never even got Harvest Moon DS in the first place.
The series' best titles will always be between the first and Magical Melody to me. Animal Parade was an exception in this up until I found out that the creator was heavily involved with it and then realized it links more closely with the original games in that regard in terms of effort. Perhaps, the best effort of MARVELOUS to me now is Story of Seasons, since changing the name finally allowed it to feel separate from the games I love and I can appreciate it better now.
The Natsume serious needs a lot of work before it will ever be likable to me, though I can't deny Skytree Village has a better art style than Story of Seasons. I sure hope Yasuhiro Wada, ConcernedApe or both team up with Natsume someday so their brand name has more respect toward it. Heck, if they got both of those guys, MARVELOUS would be in serious trouble, but even with just one of them, their games would be noticeably better. Cause it seems like Natsume has tried over a few times now to make a decent one and they all seem to have a good core and always fall flat on their limited offerings.

My favorite is...Harvest Moon (SNES). I know that the other Harvest Moon games had other things that made it more better & it's been claimed by most fans that Harvest Moon 64 is the best game in the franchise, but there are reasons why Harvest Moon (SNES) is my favorite.
1) It's the 1st Harvest Moon game I played / owned
2) It was released in 1997, (2 years past the SNES's expiration year (Just like Kirby's Dreamland 3) meaning the graphics & music were pushed past the SNES's limits.
3) In my honest opinion. A great place to start for newcomers to the franchise. Because it's so simple, beginners will find it easier to play & enjoy before moving on to the other Harvest Moon games. So I highly recommend you play Harvest Moon (SNES) as your starting point, for all you newbies out there.
4) Nostalgia. SWEET😋, SWEET😋, NOSTALGIA😍
Friends of Mineral Town is my all time favorite
My favorite in the series was AnWL, in every way except the bachelors, I think they could have picked better bachelors. The bachelorettes in AWL and AWLSE are examples of that. Sure most of the guys in forget-me-not were married, but there was an easy fix imo. Make the inn slightly bigger, extend the amount of time you have to marry a bit, and add travelling bachelors (new characters) who come and go from and to the inn, according to some kind of "schedule".
This could also make another destiny for your kid, like taking over the farm, athlete, etc. Where your kid is a traveller. Also I wish the feature to have a daughter instead of a son from AWLSE was in AnWL.

my first exposure to harvest moon was HM DS, and i also picked up HM DS cute later. i liked both games and they really got me into the harvest moon series. I even went back later and picked up HM friends of mineral town/more friends of mineral town, and magical melody. I played almost all of the other harvest moon games from 2008 to now. i think i had the most enjoyment playing HM animal parade. the world was so big and the characters has different personalities. I loved the 2 male and 2 female character player options. the controls for the Wii were simple and i loved the graphics. the number of bachelors and bachelorettes and all there different personalities were so interesting and unique. 10/10 loved it.
I still liked Harvest Moon: Friends of mineral town, so much secrets to discover, no matter how much you played it, you'll definitely have a goal to do list. Like he said, it's like a fan base and really fast paced game with lots of things to do, but in time you'll get bored of it. Good job for a 2003 game. To be honest i thought it was a 2007 game. Anyways also i though the developers were going to create another game with similarities like that game, but while they were so busy with the gameplay, that they forgot about how much people loved the classic graphic with lots of secrets, giving a multiplayer might be a next level gameplay if you ask me, if they could figure sth out. But too late, since they departed
Very nice video. I really enjoyed it. But, Marvelous didn't just come up with the name "Story of Seasons" after the split with Natsume. "Story of Seasons" was the name of the series i Japan all along. And Mavelous didn't create Xseed to publish the games. Xseed has existed for many years, but yes they agreed to publish "Story of Seasons" in the west :)
The Japanese name is Bokujō Monogatari or in English, "Farm/Ranch Story" not "Story of Seasons".

Harvest Moon: Friend's of Minreral Town (Gameboy) was my favorite, spent I don't know how many hours and or days in real life on that game.
for me the real harvest moon always the one made by marvelous ... so when they leave natsume, for me natsume harvest moon is already dead ... coz natsume is just like their translator which own the loyalty of the name harvest moon, and shamelesly using that name to deceive player who dont know to play their shitty game (lost valley, that mobile game, etc)
