- I am working through editing several shore videos covering the basic aspects of shore fishing for anglers wishing to get into our sport. Does anyone have any suggestions for info to cover? 👍🏻🎣
Cheers for that, only been fishing for about - 6 months after watching loads of these vids during the last lockdown, managed a couple trips a week ever since, absolutely love it. Caused a stir with a few seasoned anglers on the beach as my very first fish caught was a 5 and a half pound smoothy from Slapton. Can't wait to get out again.
- Thank you Kevin, I am glad that you enjoyed the video. We are simply trying to share what we know and love doing. Simple, honest and original content. 😊
Looking at the fishing lines disappearing into the darkness and roar of a night time sea, evokes my memories of the beautiful muse and peacefulness you get at night. I do miss the flickering light of the oil lamps and gas lamps though. Fantastic video yet again, thanks!!
@@TheFishLocker There is mate. The atmosphere, the feel of the surroundings, the contemplation of the beauty of it all, inspired me to become an artist decades ago. I based some of my work on the sea and coastline, trying to capture what I saw and felt, capture the beauty of it all. Moody seascapes and abstract paintings based on water flowing through rock pools and seaweed as such.
For people like me that can't fish, videos like these are superb. Starting with the waves crashing on the beach, the cold which you demonstrated and that feeling of being alone are a major part of the enjoyment. (I was always told if you go sea fishing, dress as if its going to be 10 degrees colder than you think it will be you can always remove clothing if you are too warm). Anyway its like being there for me. The tips were superb and great tip on deep hooked dogfish (I know there not your favourite but those eyes are beautiful) as always you take great care of your fish from catching to release. For someone who will never own a boat these shore fishing videos are great.
hello pal , i just wanted to say thanku , i stumbled across your videos recently and love them , i appreciate we are all going through a tough time at the moment and hope you and your family are well and all your viewers , things ain’t good but when i watch your videos until the early hours they don’t half pick me up , love the passion , the enthusiasm and everything lol , just james makes me smile , don’t ever stop , not even for a skylark behind you ! be safe x
This video is so full of helpful information John, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised!! The hand warmer/power bank thing would have been handy for me yesterday as I done a couple of hours on my local estuary & at dusk my fingers felt like I had frost bite even with gloves on!! A very handy item & one I didn't even knew existed, also the ID between pouting & poor cod is helpful for someone like me because poor cod in my part of the world are non existent so I have nothing to compare them with. I too prefer the flood not just at night time but in most situations, in my part of the world, for me at least I've found over the years that it outfishes the ebb, especially in my estuaries where the ebb is like a raging torrent. The noise of the surf crashing on the sand is also like music to my ears, this background noise is what hooked me onto Fisho's (Billy Bantock) videos years ago when I first started watching fishing on UA-cam. One last thing, when you was breathing out in the cold air it looked like you was vaping!! Great vid as usual John, can't wait for more like this!
- VAPING?!?! I would not dare!!! 🤮 haha. Aye mate the hand warmer/power banks are great. I suffer with my fingers due to my past working life and it really helps. As for the flood, absolutely as you say. Fish come in and feed with the flooding tide. The only marks here that I fish that are better on the ebb is purely because of their terrain. You walk out over ledges to fish. At high water you cannot physically fish past them. Take care mate and give my best to the family. 😊
If you look to the west and go back in time about sixty or so years you would see my parents and I surf fishing at the end of Island Beach State Park, NJ. We were freezing our arses off as you are now.
Brilliant. Tempting out those older guys that haven't braved a beach at night for a while. Some of us are possibly more comfortable with some wild browns, early on a spring morning. That includes me too mostly, but did take my twelve year old out spearfishing in Fowey a few times when I couldn't feel my limbs for a hour later... Worth every needle stinging split second. And then some.
Love the sound of the waves on the shore... night fishing is actually very tranquil. And depending on the time of the year, the sea life that comes up on the tides...
The way you lace the hook threw the bait is genius! Definitely going to try that technique on channel cats this summer! You won't have bait stripping. And you can leave the hook as proud as you like. I usually prebait my extra rods with cut bait. To keep the bait from drying out. Take a ziploc bag and put it around your bait and leader. Zip it shut. When l need a new baited rod. Take the ziploc bag off....Cast
- The ziplock idea is a great one. If I am fishing during the day and its sunny I often keep them in the bottom of a bucket with a towel over the top to stop them drying out. 😊
Another great video, I beach fish off the Suffolk coast spending many a freezing cold night waiting for now very allusive Cod only to be plagued by small whiting, no matter how big the hook they’ll always take the bait!
Really enjoy your videos. I have only just got into sea fishing, now lockdown lol. You really do get across and show how to do it rather than just show "how good you are" like some others. Well done
- Thank you very much Gary. I am very glad the videos come across that way. I know lots of people who know more than I do, I’m just sharing what I love doing. There are a few more videos coming up that are aimed at the anglers just getting into sea fishing. 👍🏻🎣
Wish I had found your instructional vids earlier than I did. They are brilliant John. Well done again. Now I realise I was making basic mistakes & making life difficult for myself. Sold my boat recently due to it constantly being vandalised on the club hard. Now have a couple of dedicated fishing kayaks & trailer where they live at home on my drive. Miss the boat sometimes but I do enjoy my kayaking & its cheaper than boat owning ha!! 😬👍🍻
Great video. I'm just returned to beach fishing after many years and what I learnt was not to fish after a storm. The bottom was so churned up that every cast I gathered masses of weed, that was dragging on my line and making the fishing a bad experience.
Great video again john really was brass monkey weather wasn't it .That pulley rig you were right it did work on a weir one of my boys used it only lost two leads caught three chub and small barbel no tackle lost great tip john you all keep safe tight lines
John - My father used to used heavy carpet threat years ago to wind around the bait when we were lake shore fishing to stop the little marauders from picking our cut baits apart just like you are doing now @ 05:30. For catfish bait, the folks had an ancient old smelly roast kept frozen in the basement freezer that catfish. Great tips still work no matter what their age.
Thank you for the video John. Our weather here in Oklahoma changes so drastically from day to day it's nothing to go out one day and it's 60°f and the next day it's in the mid 30°f range. In the winter I take clothes with me when I go fishing because it could be done to 25°f when I decide to go home. Good fishing and stay safe my friend.
I was impressed with the deep hook release method you use. I normally use a metal scissor to grab the hook and because your holding the scissor it can on occasion mess the fish up more than I'd like to especially with smaller fish. The bucket of water was also a great tip even just to keep your hands clean. Thanks for the tips. Great show
Great video and I'm looking forward to the next. My local beach is very shallow so moving is a must. Only thing I would say is that I keep my bait in a plastic tub especially during the day because when busy at the water I've lost it before not only to gulls but dogs too and I worry about hooks.
Just spent the last 1.5hrs watching various sea fishing videos and learnt very little, this video however, I have learnt so much. Very informative and easy to follow. Keep up the great work 👍
I am very glad to hear that Danny. If you are looking for educational video have a look at my playlist “Shore fishing for beginners” there should be a few tips and tricks on there for you hopefully. 😉👍🏻🎣

Years back I thought i would do a lot of fishing when i retired , Now I am retired and cant afford the expense .Head boat is 61 dollars for 4 hours and double That for 8 .
Another very good video, looking forward to more. One extra tip for beginners is that you dont need to spend huge amounts of money on tackle, but whatever you get, its good to clean everything in freshwater afterwards and be very careful to keep sand away from reels!
Thanks for another great video, I have just purchased my 1st every beach casting rod and going to get into this. Your videos are very good and you explain what your doing and what's involved very clear and great info for learning , many thanks.
Oh man, went beach fishing recently. Threw my 'big fish rig' out and got some interesting pulls, but whatever it was didn't get on the hook proper, so annoying! Caught a couple of mullet though, so that made my day.
Hi John, just been watching with my grandson, Ned, your Q and A LIVE MARCH 2021, I understand how busy you are but I asked the question '' what do you think of the PULLEY DROP DOWN RIG? ''for my grandsons point of view''. as I mentioned, I apreciate how busy you are but I would like a reply from your good self for him , you are his hero. All the best to you and your family, please take care
I don't know what you mean? You meant he pulley rig or the pulley dropper rig? I have videos on them on the fishlocker workshop channel and also videos using them on this channel. I hope that answers your question 👍🏻
What a great video about beach fishing. Maybe I’ll just have to buckle up and go fish from the shoreline now, it might get cold but I never know. The temperature here has not been stable at all, so I’ll just have to see the day. But now it’s time to look over the reels and lines😬 all the best, have a good one mate👍
Another fantastic video! Thanks. Really liked the content. I sometimes get confused by what rig and bait to use and when. Thanks for keeping the channel updated with good videos 👍
thanks john for fulfilling your promise to do a night beach video that you said you would do a few months back in the summer . nice one . love beach fishing up here on the east coast . mappleton was always my fav place , spurn point a close second when you could virtually drive down the road to nearly the point . ps my brother les won the 1999 diawa beach open with a cod on his very last cast on spurn road . think he got about 2 grand and some diawa gear for winning it.
Absolute masterclass on shore fishing ,safety ,un hooking correctly deep hooking will happen at times don't panic take your time.Everyone can learn from this total pleasure to watch your camera style adds that extra touch it's like I'm fishing next to you just brill.Coarse fishing has been banned here in the Midlands due to new lockdown.Take care stay safe and remember if it's too cold rush back home to Hanna lol.All the very best Happy New Year to you and yours.Tony
Forgot to ask saw a article on great whites becoming possible return visitors to your neck of the woods. Is this true Have any been seen by reputable anglers Can you fish for them in UK Why anyone would want to is beyond me I panick at thought of a huge Conger ,if I saw a proper great white 16+ footer I'd need tranquilizing lol.Have you got any horror stories on dangerous species in UK ?.Sorry it was long winded.Regards Tony
@@TheFishLocker Yes I checked with the Angling Trust and the government did a u turn.Typical though freezing here and pond froze up.Fair weather fairy now IL wait for some of that wonderful stuff called sunshine.Take care stay safe regards.Tony
Another perfect video, thanks for suffering the cold. It always makes me happy when I see a new video pop up from fish locker...... I know it really doesn’t matter but something I noticed was the eyes on the fishing rod seemed small like what you would see on a bait casting rod. Spinning rods typically have large eyes near to the reel. But I heard that the fish don’t really care what kind of rod you use 😂. Might be something to teach about (different types of rods) Thanks again my friend, your the best 👍👍👍👍
Thanks John for this informative video. Have not done a lot of beach fishing but could do with suggestions on hook size and type also how to stop crabs taking bait. Thanks again
- There is no way to stop crabs taking baits Mike. You can just slow them down. I have a lot of shore fishing vids in the shore fishing playlist that cover baiting up and hook choice etc.😊
Cheers John just bought myself a full beach casting setup so these are a great help be nice to see some smooth hound from the beach in the better weather.👍🏻 also i second that hand warmer ive got the same one is a belter
Hi John, many thanks for taking us down to the beach🙂 looks very cold 🥶. Also thanks for the tips. Great idea to have baited traces ready to go even before you have unhooked your catch. You are a life line for many of us in this mess we are in. You make the break for us Happy New Year. Ian👍
Great video! Love learning from your posts.. very informative... you are brave to go out in that cold brrrrr. I am so use to Florida warmth but we do get some cold days in the 30’s during the winter months.... thanks for the posts ! Cheers!!!

I am in North Norway, and I'm struggling getting the fish to bite during this time of year from the shore... However I do fish during the short hours of daylight. Maybe I should go for some night fishing. But -10 and strong winds doesn't make that idea to tempting X)
- I do not blame you for not wanting to go our in those temperatures. Have a look for Phil Dales UA-cam channel. He fishes in Norway and has some great success. 😊
you can pick up some good cheap heated waist coats on ebay run by power packs very light ideal for fishing or any outdoor pursuits in the cold different heat settings, when u order always go 2 sizes bigger for comfort
- If you’re going for a shore reel you won’t go wrong with a Spinfisher but the 7500 I have is a bit big for most folks. A 5500 or 6000 size are better.
Hiya, happy new year. We’re you an instructor or teacher ? All your vids are well produced for tips and tricks and education. So many UA-camrs spend 30 minutes without imparting any real tips but your vids especially your diving are full of worthwhile content. Been watching you for a while and you are right up there! Even old pros can pick something useful up!! Thanks
AWESOME video John, thank god we got to see a video before lockdown kicked in. Brilliant detail and I never knew that technique about deep hooked doggies, cheers mate. John the colours on those Mackerel are stunning with the light shining on them , still looks pretty cold though 👍😉, any chance you could send me the link to that hand warmer or send me in the right direction 👍
years ago when i lived in mablethorpe , during the winter i did long lineing from the beach , on night as i waded in a wave covered my wellies , as you can imagine my feet and legs were freezing , but after about 20 minits my body heat warmed up the water , it was like having hot water bottles on my feet , every night after that i filled my wellies on purpose !

- I hope the tips help folks out.
Oh man, went beach fishing recently.
Threw my 'big fish rig' out and got some interesting pulls, but whatever it was didn't get on the hook proper, so annoying!
Caught a couple of mullet though, so that made my day.
- Excellent. Not every day you catch big fish!!

I really want to get some shovel-nose rays, but only ever gotten one here. Damned good tasting though.
- Take care brother.
Another fantastic video! Thanks. Really liked the content. I sometimes get confused by what rig and bait to use and when. Thanks for keeping the channel updated with good videos 👍
- No problem Mark. I have a few more videos coming up to accompany this one that should hopefully help folks out. 😊
Really cold out there. I enjoyed the video John. Stay safe my Fish Locker Family. 💋
- Thank you Cecelia and have a lovely day. 😊
thanks john for fulfilling your promise to do a night beach video that you said you would do a few months back in the summer . nice one . love beach fishing up here on the east coast . mappleton was always my fav place , spurn point a close second when you could virtually drive down the road to nearly the point . ps my brother les won the 1999 diawa beach open with a cod on his very last cast on spurn road . think he got about 2 grand and some diawa gear for winning it.
- No worries David. I have a couple more shore videos in editing right now so they should be up soon. 😊
@@TheFishLocker nice one john . love watching your videos , keep em coming pal
Great tip re the timing. I have never applied any monitoring to it. Good suggestion.
- Other people may have their own system. I find that works for me. 😊
so different fishing out there... man.. beautiful.. thanks for making these
- It is my pleasure. 😊
Is this true
Have any been seen by reputable anglers
Can you fish for them in UK
Why anyone would want to is beyond me I panick at thought of a huge Conger ,if I saw a proper great white 16+ footer I'd need tranquilizing lol.Have you got any horror stories on dangerous species in UK ?.Sorry it was long winded.Regards Tony
- We do not get GW sharks I the UK. I must have had to explain this a hundred times. No proof what so ever. Just a publicity stunt.
- It is my understanding that fishing has been opened back up providing it can be done in accordance with other lockdown rules?
- You are right mate. Fish don't know if its a £10 rod or a £300 rod. There are more videos to come. 😉
Nice to see you back on the beach John, really enjoyed, thank you. Happy New Year to you and your family.
- Thank you David. I have a few more in editing you should enjoy. 😊
I wish we had Mark's like yours up here on river humber John. All the best stay safe
- You’ve got the spurn?
Cheers John just bought myself a full beach casting setup so these are a great help be nice to see some smooth hound from the beach in the better weather.👍🏻 also i second that hand warmer ive got the same one is a belter
- I have a few videos on the channel already for smoothhound from the shore. Have a look if you haven't seen them already?
Great info for someone like me who doesn't know how to set up a line thanks 👍
- Any time Gary. 😊
Hi John, many thanks for taking us down to the beach🙂 looks very cold 🥶. Also thanks for the tips. Great idea to have baited traces ready to go even before you have unhooked your catch.
You are a life line for many of us in this mess we are in. You make the break for us
Happy New Year. Ian👍
- I am just sharing what I know and love doing Ian. It is my pleasure to help.😊
Ya look like Monster From the Black Lagoon coming up from the surf. Good show.
- Haha. Breathing smoke and hobbling up the beach.lol
Great video! Love learning from your posts.. very informative... you are brave to go out in that cold brrrrr. I am so use to Florida warmth but we do get some cold days in the 30’s during the winter months.... thanks for the posts ! Cheers!!!
- Haha. Brave or crazy!! haha 🥶
@@TheFishLocker you are not crazy , but you are living the dream of what makes you happy and that is a blessing .. I only just found d out about your little boy from an older video .. my heart sank for you all .. keep the positive attitude that you have and may God bless you all !
Great vid mate. Really enjoyed it. Made me miss beach fishing so much feels like I haven't been for ever. Wish I lived by the sea. Tight lines bud 🎣 🎣🎣
- Get yourself amongst it as soon as you can bud.😊
@@TheFishLocker to right mate. But in the mean time your vids will keep me going 🤣😉
Out on the beach, nice but not that cold, the waves freeze when they hit the sand were I am👍👍
- Thats too cold for me Billy. 🥶
Big baits , big hooks , bluey ,whole squid on up & over rigs .
Well done John, nice vid. I hope all those newbies noticed that you had your life jacket on.
- Safety first. 😊
@@TheFishLocker Yes indeed!
Great to see my favorite fisherman is back doing what he does best. A happy new year to you and your family my friend. 👍🍺
- Cheers Charlie. Stay safe mate. 👍🏻
That looked cold 🥶 great video👍👍
- Haha. Freezing mate. 🥶
That powerbank on your pocket...you are geanius 😊thank you
- Any time. 😊
Your videos have helped me so much with my first few shore fishing trips. Keep them coming please :)
I am just glad if the videos are helping folks. I wish I had someone telling me these things when I started out. 😊👍🏻🎣
Very informative and helpful; but oh so cold, even just looking! P
- I hope the video helps folks out.
you can pick up some good cheap heated waist coats on ebay run by power packs very light ideal for fishing or any outdoor pursuits in the cold different heat settings, when u order always go 2 sizes bigger for comfort
Thanks for the tip!
Great little tip, on De-Hooking 👍🏻
- Thank you. 😊
Top Bloke and great vid yet again inspired me to buy my new Penn surfcaster and get back out there
- If you’re going for a shore reel you won’t go wrong with a Spinfisher but the 7500 I have is a bit big for most folks. A 5500 or 6000 size are better.
Great Tube yet again. Thanks for the info. Happy New Year to you and your family. All the best for 2021.
- Any time mate. More of this to come. 😊
That is some big surf John. Wow
- I know right. Be careful. 😉🤣
I never seem to do any good off the beach, look forward to seeing any other tips, got anything for rough seas and any rig tips help 👍👍
- The rig videos are all on the workshop channel mate. More videos to come. 😉
Thanks
- Thank you Kevin, I know exactly the types of channels you mean. I hope that is what sets ours apart. 😊
@@TheFishLocker absolutely is, I wager the 200K subs by Easter!!!
AWESOME video John, thank god we got to see a video before lockdown kicked in. Brilliant detail and I never knew that technique about deep hooked doggies, cheers mate. Hope you are able to do some videos while in lockdown. I’ve got the Ian gold test as well brilliant rest. Best wishes to you and the family mate, stay safe 👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏
- Don't worry mate I have a few more in the bank as well. 😊
Brilliant news mate glad to hear it. Now the ban has been lifted hope to see some more of your adventures 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the video John another excellent one mate love to all the family 🛥👍
- It is my pleasure George. 😊
Looking forward to the upcoming tips, helps novices like myself a massive amount. Great video 👍
- I have a few more videos in editing as we speak. Should be up soon. 😊
Nice one as always 👍 mind you I have to have half the choccy cupboard and a flask in my box, some essential items missing there John 😂😂
- Haha. I like your priorities. 😊
Always been a cod and chips or plaice type of guy ,then I saw you catch bass my what a change, really nice fish , going to try others now, mackerel next i think,👍😷🥶 and one for James 🦕
- Oh yes. Bass is lovely. Gilthead bream is absolutely wonderful also. Mackerel is an oily fish so some folks don’t enjoy it.
Happy New year John, all the best to you and your family.
Keep making those videos
- Thank you very much mate. Take care bud. 😊
John the colours on those Mackerel are stunning with the light shining on them , still looks pretty cold though 👍😉, any chance you could send me the link to that hand warmer or send me in the right direction 👍
- Will do mate. 😊
@john could you send me info on the hand warmer answer please. Great video
Thanks John,, very interesting. By heck that was cold. Fish straight to the freezer? Take care and be safe.. Graham👍👍❄️❄️🎣🎣
- At least the bait stayed fresh.lol.
years ago when i lived in mablethorpe , during the winter i did long lineing from the beach , on night as i waded in a wave covered my wellies , as you can imagine my feet and legs were freezing , but after about 20 minits my body heat warmed up the water , it was like having hot water bottles on my feet , every night after that i filled my wellies on purpose !
- Haha. Rather you than me, they would have frozen on this night. I'd have had blocks of ice for toes!!!
