Sensei Richard Heselton, 5. Dan (JKA) - interview, 拓大空手部リチャード先生インタビュー【Akita's Karate Video】
On the occasion of the Takushoku University Karate Club Gasshuku in summer 2019, Shinji Akita had the chance for an interview with Sensei Richard Heselton.
Heselton Sensei was born in Whitby, northeast England, and started practicing Karate at the age of 12. In 1993, he became a member of the K.U.G.B. Junior National Squad under Sensei Andy Sherry and Sensei Frank Brennan. Two years later, Heselton Sensei came to Japan and started training at the JKA Honbu under Sensei Tatsuya Naka. From 2000 to 2004, he entered the Takushoku University Karate Club under Sensei Katsunori Tsuyama and became the first foreign captain of the Karate team two years later, leading it to various successes. Today, Heselton Sensei is coach of the Takudai Karate club. He teaches at the faculty of International Studies at Takushoku University.
A big thank you to Heselton Sensei for this interview on his very interesting and unique background.
Please stay tuned and also check out our other videos on the Takudai Gasshuku.

An enjoyable interview with some really well thought out questions. Something that stood out was how 'Japanese' he has become. Most Westerners would not deflect questions with as much style as he did.
Obviously he has learned much in his 25 years in Japan.
A question from me please. I wonder why is he referred to as Richard Sensei instead of Heselton Sensei? Is it because his family name is too difficult to pronounce, it something he asks for, or is there another reason? Thank you.

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.
Regarding your question: Richard Sensei prefers to be called that way.

Definitely !!! Bill Blinky. Looks like Heselton Sensei goes beyond the technical aspects of the art to embarrass the culture behind it.
      Really interesting and remarkable.
      Oss !!!

@@nagai91 I believe you meant to type 'embrace'. Embarrass is something that I am constantly doing to myself ;-)

@@AkitasDojo My apologies for the delay in thanking you.
My own observations are that Westerners are most often referred to by title first followed by their name, Sensei Peter for example.
Japanese are referred to by their name first followed by Sensei, for example Takahashi Sensei.
Also we use first names & Japanese mostly use family names. I find things like this interesting.
I have my theory as to why but I was curious about your thoughts.
