True story. The Character of Manky Franky is based on an old friend of mine, called, oddly enough, Frank. He was a biker who lived in a high rise flat on the very outskirts of the west of Glasgow. He was notorious for rebuilding motorbikes in his flat and leaving bits of them scattered all over the shared landing, along with greasy handprints. He wasn't very happy when he saw this episode, but eventually saw the funny side.

This episode reminds me of an incident that happened in 1977. I was with my regiment stationed in Northern Ireland and one of the married soldiers thought he was a bit of an electrician. He wired his electricity supply up to a street light that was outside his house, expecting to get free electricity, sadly when his next electricity came through the post, it was for almost £2000. in fact he'd wired the street lights through his electricity meter and got billed for lighting the street. It went down as legendary story that was talked about for years afterwards. Thanks for the upload, Alan. Great channel.

Gets way better. Production, acting. The comedy. The character building is excellent, you'll get to love/hate them all. The slang does tone down a wee bit after the first series. It has it's flaws (like seen him breathing) But they are minor if you don't think about them too much. I think what makes it so good, is we can all relate, we all know people like these characters, esp in Scotland.

E.B. My wife's brother lived in Dunfermline, and we would go up to Scotland & visit her parents we would always make sure we went to his home to say hello , as mainly he was utterly hilarious , a heavy drinker and the Scots/English racist banter we would throw at each other would curl some peoples toes hearing it, but he was funny as fook as a person and a lovely guy ( sober ). He had a "electric meter " with a spinning wheel , but he managed to slide a 35mm photo negative ( now literally non existent ) down the meter casing and the bend at the end of the negative would stop the wheel from spinning, so he wasn't racking up a charge. He always had two electric fires on 24/7, nigh on exactly as the ones on Winston's bedroom. Apparently everyone in the block of flats were doing the same...lol I do love the Scots.

Houses in Scotland don’t have as much Insulation and they tend to depend on electric heaters.

    About the insulation, aye.
Those apartments, a block of flats or a tower block however you like to put it, built in the post-war period after cities were bombed flat by the Luftwaffe, in a short space of time to get as many people housed as possible, with often little regard to safety concerns.
Mould was a big problem, damp as well. Walls were often prefabricated and thin as a cracker.
Many of those high rises have been pulled down, often demolished with explosives (quite spectacular actually), some of them have survived and been heavily refurbished and modernised to be up to proper safety standards. Especially in Glasgow where Still Game takes place, most have been demolished but quite a few survive. They filmed Osprey Heights in the Botany area of Maryhill. Everything else in the area that you see in the show around the high rise block was condemned and pulled down many moons ago. They’re putting up rather post modern flats in their place, but much of the neighbourhood is flat ground where the council housing used to be, but the tower block (undoubtedly due in part to its iconic status as the Still Game tower block) has survived.
But back to the safety of these buildings.
Quite a few of them survive and are brought up to modern standards of comfort, although that doesn’t stop other things from making them dangerous. Flammable cladding on the outside for instance.
That resulted in the Grenfell tower fire down in London, dozens killed, and the bloody Tories in charge have done little to see it that they get that cladding off these blocks before another disaster waiting to happen happens.

Actually a strong magnet was all that was required to make the counter fail. Other meters would stop counting if placed at an angle. If caught however by inspection of the meters, you'd get a hefty fine. The UK wages have been low for quite some time and these days the amount of foodbanks providing for working couples has increased a lot. The effects of Covid and the Ukraine conflict, pale in comparison to Brexit and it still hasn't reached pre Covid GDP as only one in the G20. And it will continue to get worse for a decade.

Aye Beard, every year during the winter months is particularly dangerous for the older generations, temps of -10 and less are the norm in some places, I believe Blairgowrie or Ballater holds the record at -23 or some such (I may be a wee bit off there I didn’t check..) when I was growing up it wasn’t unusual to have days of power cuts and actually be snowed in for days because of how heavy the snow can be, I haven’t seen a proper bad winter like that for many years though, global warming perhaps I’m not sure but 7/8 feet of snow was common back then in the out laying areas or in the glens, Cairngorm’s, Dufftown, Bremar areas usually if it’s gonna be bad it’s that areas that see the worst earliest, you always knew if it was going to be a bad spell as the snow gates would be closed there first…

You'll start to understand the "patter" (Banter) better the more you watch the show and the understanding of the accent will inadvertently improve as well. Although they do, in the later seasons tone down the dialect and make it a bit easier to understand.

@@TheEclecticBeard I must have missed it in the editing. You've picked a popular series, I'm English but I don't mind the odd Scottish comedy. Chewin the fat started before still game. One of my favourite episodes is coming up shortly when they are asked to empty the chamber pot. Prepare your self I nearly died laughing. You'll have to pause & rewind I think.

If you look at reaction video's you sé Americans talking about prices especially with food being cheaper item wise
However many working class poor would regard M & S, Sainsbury's and especially Waitrose as expensive for everyday shopping. Utilities may even be cheaper than the US. Gas/petrol is really expensive at around £6:50 per gallon
