When you become champion you become famous. You get brand deals, merchandising, you go on tour, and anyone that wants to become champion has to beat you to do it. You also gain a significant role as part of federal law enforcement, with almost no restrictions on how you act in the pursuit of that duty. The champion in Pokémon is the equivalent to a Specter in Mass Effect
It also sounds like what happens in Hunter x Hunter.
ooooo
I know that I’m late but it also important to know that some things may not cost as much as it does where you live, for example houses, children, taxes and more. For example, in some countries, schools and taking care of your physical health (with that I mean going to hospitals and things like that) doesn’t cost but in some places, it’s like the most expensive thing.
@@81ue93 it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that pretty much every basic human need is taken care of due to the fact that humans and Pokémon are able to work so closely together to improve society. They have such a huge wealth of resources that scarcity doesn’t exist

A year and 3 months pokemon journey having an initial overhead of $6,000 isn't too bad to be honest. It seems like the Pokemon Journey acts more like an internship where you gain exposure to all the avenues of the workforce in the Pokemon World, from the towns to the government, and then at the end of the journey, you specialize into your field and pursue that, using your contacts and recommendations of your peers.
funny thing is, he didnt have to do the lemonade comparison, he could have just translated the yen to pokedollars directly from the japan games
He had to account for inflation and buying power.
I would cut transportation costs too since you just walk everywhere
Yep. And in the anime, Ash and his friends just ride on Lapras' back to each of the Orange Islands.
In X and Y games there's a taxi.
There’s taxis and trains in Sword/Shield although I don’t know if you’re actually paying for any of it
That and some of your pokemon can fly and surf across water
And he's calculating for the original games so those two things don't come into play at all
If you chose pikachu you wouldn't have to pay electric bills
Or really any electric type, for that matter.
clever.... very clever
Nor water if you have a water type
You could technically grow food too if you have the right grass type
Person 06 get a fire type and an ice type to lower any heating/cooling costs. A water type would lower the water requirements because you could use them for any non-consumable water needs. Theres probably a set of pokemon that could eliminate the majority of the cost of living if used right

You forgot to factor in the fact that medical bills in the pokemon world are TOTALLY FREE because their medical care is so insanely good. In addition to that you're only factoring in how profitable being a champion in Kanto specifically is. In Pokemon Platinum which takes place in Sinnoh you get a house for free and make enough money to totally furnish the place out. All in all, lemonade might not be the best way to convert that worlds money into cash. It's probably so much more expensive there because all the necessities are so much more affordable because their economy is in such crazy good shape. For reference you can buy a chandelier for 120000 pokedollars amounting to about 465 usd according to your calculations. That's WAY cheaper than it would be in real life to pay for the purchase and installation of a chandelier. So while it may seem like pokemon trainers are super poor, you're also forgetting that their world is in much much better shape economically than we are in real life.
noob1n8or good point
True
Let's not forget when he's talking about the amount trainers it refers to the game, however there would be far more trainers in real life to battle, and he's using Ash's travel for the average.
Ash is a subjectively horrible trainer and his travel would take much longer than that of a good trainer.
Patzilla 1999 also, if you could look at all the Pokémon’s abilities, some could be extremely profitable, as shown in the Alola anime
Machamp construction equipment. Dugtrio for mining. This list goes on forever.
The fact that Ash has been 11 for 25 years just makes it all worth it to me.
I just started the video, but wouldn't traveling through the wilderness, constantly on the move, be a bit more cost efficient than staying at home? With a house, you have food, water, electric, car, and house payments, and presumably less Pokémon to catch and people to fight in order to gain money. On the road, you don't have to pay a lot of those expenses, and meet more Pokémon and people to fight. Sure, hotels can be pretty expensive, but they probably spend a good chunk of the time on the road anyways.
"And make them fight TO THE DEATH!"
"To the faint, I mean, to the faint."
Nuzlocke: *Am I a joke to you?*

I imagine they make most of their money by selling the Pokémon that they level up, or from tickets sold to watch their fights.

Me: depends on what Pokémon you have.
If you have a Meowth, then you’re all set.
Because Payday
Nurse Joy: Here's your bill for Healing Pikachue!" Ash: IM NOT PAYING FOR DAT!
I respect your work Mattpat, but there are ways to get around this. You haven't included the amulet coin which doubles prize money, or O-powers which can triple you prize earnings and stacks with the amulet. There is also the move Happy hour. This move doesn't stack with the amulet but DOES stack with O- Powers. End result being *over 6x* what you came up with. Lastly, you can take away the costs of transportation since most trainers end up using Fly to travel most places.
Didn't exist in Gen 1. Sure it would be different in other games.
Still doesn't excuse the logic of the Pokemon economy
In sun and moon you get like 18 million pokedollars. That's better
Hmm, I wonder how much it changes if you account for the fact that original Red and Green were released 20 years ago now. Does inflation change it at all?
Inflation = about 500 thousand
It does, but the second run would still only give you 1500 dollars and the first still only about 3000(I️ found an online inflation calculator)
JaR Dev in soul silver I made almost 10 million currency. That's after buying a lot of crap to for the speedrun so yeah kanto may be a bust but JOHTO+KANTO makes you more than enough for steady living
Now we also need to look at it if we were to use the Amulet Coin as soon as it was given as well.
Superaws what do you mean, it’s only like double inflation not 250x

I don't usually speak up, but there are actual restaurants in the pokemon games that you could've accounted for in the prices of food, also, most of the dishes, which the *people* are eating are made with the berries that you can find and grow in the game, basically, you can make your own food and supplementive liquids out of things you find on your journey, like Brock, if you are using the anime. Ingredients such as milk and eggs can also be found in the game (From miltanks and breeding) and I bet that there is a pokemon version of wheat, since cake and bread exist, so making your own food using survivalist type farming (which on a wandering journey you would probably read up on beforehand).
Not to mention that in the anime, Ash travels with 2 Gym leaders, who both probably have paychecks from the pokemon league as you said, and Brock is shown making/providing the food for the biggest part of the show.
So you could most likely cut the costs of food from the journey (or at least Ash's) to lessen the cost of it.
Also, since you didn't cut transportation, which in the average I assume you are using (the one that includes gas prices for owned motor vehicles, which are not used regularly by the characters in the show) you could have at least cut out gas prices because the most we see is the occasional train/boat ride since most of the transportation is done on foot.
There are also the rare treasures like the gold nuggets that you get and sell for the real big bucks, increasing your profits by a large amount, plus if you get a lucky amulet (which you do in the majority of games) it would double your battle income.
Some games also tackle the low income of pkmn trainers by offering jobs in hotels, serving at those aforementioned restaurants, and even becoming a farmhand. So the overall losses of the journey would be much less than you calculated :/
That being said I don't mean this as harmful in any way, just as some points that could have been added for more accuracy, because I love your videos *thumbs up*
And THAT'S WITHOUT HAPPY HOUR OR ROTOM MONEY

We all want Ash's age; do you accept the challenge of figuring it out?

Why would you use old generations for these costs? You earn a lot more money in newer generations.
Defeating Rainbow Rocket can get you 2 million $P in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. You get 57,000 $p from battling the elite four, which can double if you have an amulet coin equipped. You can also rematch the elite four and take on new challengers for the Champion title for an additional 2,000 $p per battle. With an amulet coin, that's an extra 20,000 $p.
"But what about the mediocre trainers you encounter in-game?" you might ask.
You have to consider what their title is before battling* them, for example Artist .
Pokemon battling is a hobby to these people, and not a main source of income.
Notice how actual trainers are either young, veterans, or Aces. The youngsters are just starting out, they won't realize how strong you actually have to be in order to be a professional. Aces and Veterans on the other hands give more money upon defeat. Why? Because pokemon battling is their profession.
In the end, pokemon battling is like being an entertainer, whether that entertainer is an artist, actor, or musician, you either make it and profit, or you don't and you find yourself doing something else.
Like being a Bug Maniac

Pokemon pulled a DC/Marvel comics in gen 7 and made everything cannon by establishing a multiverse.
that $12,000... is it based on the more recent years or based on the time the game was released?
i mean that would be a vital thing for the price to be converted to considering the current cost to raise a child would be far less back then compared to now...
The amulet coin was also introduced in gen 2, and you still earn more money battling the elite four in gen 4 than you would in gen 1.
plus most careers in the Pokémon world require Pokémon from construction(Machop etc.) to health care (Chansey) even if you don't plan on becoming a Pokémon master a journey to catch and train Pokémon in your chosen field is likely a required starting point.
The question isn't "How rich is a Pokémon Trainer?", it's "Which region produces the richest Pokémon Trainer?"

Anyone else wish that MatPat would do a sort of post-Show livestream after theories where he would address questions or criticism for a particular theory? Because sometimes he gets a lot a flak or confusion from his fans and it’d be nice to have some clarification or follow up. I remember really early game theory where he actually had an episode dedicated to responding to comments and it was really fun. I know that there’s probably a chunk of people who won’t watch it but idk I think it’d be a fun way to connect with some of the more dedicated fans of the show
DisasterRook YES that’s such a great idea!
This is a great idea! I’ve seen posts discussing more about MatPats theories then MatPat does himself, like an analysis of his theories. Something like this would not only clear things up but improve his theories. Perhaps make a reddit post for it so it’d be easier to see comments as it wouldn’t be as crowded as UA-cam or Twitter. Anyway this is a great idea that I hop MatPat will see and take into consideration at least!
That`s an awesome idea! Hopefully he sees this :D
Ross Castaldi Maybe It could also reduce his work load because he can do these in alternation with Game Theory so he might have more time to produce game theories so he can better research some of this stuff and just have less flak in general.
That one person without a creative name Thank you but I want to point out that we don’t really know MatPat’s exact process in creating a game theory or running his channel so he’s probably thought of this before but decided not to a variety of reasons. For all we know that episode of GameTheory where he replied to comments could have tanked and just gained views over the half decade its existed so it looks like a success to us despite bieng a failure

MatPat: calculating the net worth of a character from a fictional universe about catching small monsters
Well, the main problem is that the two worlds are VASTLY different, even without pokemon. Aside from looker in gen 4, we never see evidence of a cohesive government. Healthcare appears to be free (which may be covered by the corporations that profit from battling), and housing is scarce (seriously, you never really find any unoccupied homes). Needless to say, comparing our world to the world of pokemon is like comparing apples to imaginary oranges. Maybe lemonade is far more expensive in the pokeworld because of a shortage of fruit trees (think about it, how many have you ever actually seen). Perhaps on these tiny islands with small economies, that money is worth far more. In fact, I think there is good evidence that there is good money to be made, because everyone and their dog in pokemon tries it, and the corporations who make money off of those people are clearly well-off. Just a thought.
Porter Sorensen that was really well thought out. Good job.
Porter Sorensen Holy mac and cheese. Matpat got outsmarted

Plus the world of the games is vastly different from the world of the anime so you can't really use the anime as a reference point either. (with several anime exclusive towns, attractions etc., making the anime's regions a lot bigger)
not only is health care free but they are fed and housed at any pokecenter for free too I belive. Don't quote me on that tho
I was hoping you’d take some of the items into account. There’s a held item in game called the amulet coin (introduced in gen 2) that significantly increases the amount of prize money from battles. I’d like to see the numbers ran again accounting for the amulet for the maximum you could be earning as a Pokémon trainer

Well, it also costs you thousands of dollars to go to college but that doesn't seem to stop people.

And yeah, Pokemon centers are free, but we are not sure about human hospitals, we only see one on one episode and it was an emergency so the money is not mention.
And about transportation... in the game you have to buy tickets to take a boat, that ash and company have some free rides that doesnt mean that every transportation method is free. And for easy that it may look to just ride your pokemon it sure is not that easy to do on long distances, and your pokemon will get tired or will be very small to be able to make a global journey with you on their back.
You could pick charmander, and threaten to use flame thrower in a pokemart
The one time we hear Ashton’s voice he sounds like the kid from sonic X
I want ash's age!
Why did I actually rush to do that in 3 seconds? I could have just paused for crying out loud!
Because your a degenerate, like me.
Honestly, I was expecting the calculation to be based on the single, constantly proffitable item in the game that exists in real life, the nugget. A solid chunk of gold, would have DRAMATICALLY changed the calculations.
Daikataro Kamegawa Is the weight of the Nugget stated?
Daikataro Kamegawa that's not necessary for being a pokemon master. Buying and selling would not be something every trainer does, just yours. It would change the calculations but they would not be accurate. He calculated the ratings you make solely on your journey to the top, only using lemonade as a comparison tool to the real world.

That's the thing, I can't remember whether or not it is, or what references are given, since I'm not a theorist. Point is, the au lait is a real world item, modelled after the game, while the chunk of gold is a real world item, that already existed, thrown into the game.
Gamer, that's exactly my point; the au lait was born into the game, and shortly after, thrown into the real world as a novelty item, while the nugget, aka gold, has one, always existed in the real world and two, always been valuable, and a fairly reliable tool for calculating value.
Just my opinion of course, but I stand that the nugget was a superior choice, when calculating the value of a pokedollar.
NOW! Hold on a second we might have something in our hands. While the weight itself, is never stated, one, all the entries say it is made out of pure, high quality gold, and very important two, it has a fling power of 30, putting it on a weight scale with several other items. I'm certain Matpat could go on from there, I just won't since like I said, I ain't no theorist and am lazy.
Daikataro Kamegawa oh I'm sorry I actually read your first comment wrong.
:-( what I thought you meant was that why didn't he put in items such as the Nugget as a reliable source of income.
The only reason I can assume that he didn't use the Nugget instead of the lemonade would probably be because gold values fluctuate dramatically and very constantly as well as they differ from around the world.
MatPats Vibrato is insane! It's almost like the man was in theater or something
3:31 There is an episode in the anime where Jessie and James are haunted by ghastly, haunter and Gengar Jessie is forced a hallucination that she's in miami beach... i remember cuz i live in miami beach and i really wanted to see pokemon.

That’s why old trainers usually have a career like “Old Fisherman Dale want’s to fight” but young trainers are just referred to as “Lass” or “Youngster”. They grow up and get a job but they still hold on to their pokemon and keep battling, though now it’s just a hobby.
No wonder the Gentlemen trainers tend to pay decent amounts and have some decent Pokemon on their side, they’ve had those Pokemon for years and have more money to give
