I like the look of the prototype more. The rust colour and satin finish is far more interesting than the generic black gloss finish on the production model which looks like every other strat copy

I bought a Yamaha Revstar Professional with P-90’s at a local shop in Japan last summer and after falling in love with the build quality and craftsmanship of my instrument I have been so close to buying a Pacifica, but have been holding out for the day Yamaha reintroduced a high level model again. Glad I didn’t have to wait too long!
Even the cheapest Pacificas are good instruments. Perhaps the best in its price ranges. Something no less important, they are one of the most comfortable guitars I have ever played in my life. This top-of-the-range model is going to sell like hotcakes. Greetings from Mendoza, Argentina! ❤️❤️❤️
Problem with them is you can’t upgrade certain things. Like bridge which needs upgrading. Dimensions are not standard.
@@BeefNEggs057 What the heck are you talking about, man? The bridge, tuners, etc are all vintage spec. Look for any trem that has 10.5mm spacing.
You can literally drop in the NS510, Vegatrem, etc without modifications. Not to mention, this professional series already has a great Gotoh bridge.

What people don't know is that Yamaha Pacifica guitars were high-end guitars when they were first made in 1990. Yamaha endorsed guitar virtuoso Michael Lee Firkins and made the Pacifica line exclusively for him as his guitar signature series! Later on (5 or 6 years after) they made a Telecaster-like model for Mike Stern.
Those original Pacifica's had nothing to do with the ones that came since early 2000 that were budget guitars made afterwards.
Those original Pacifica's were made in the USA and, depending on the models, they had Seymour Duncan pickups or DiMarzio pickups, they had three types of tremolo bridges, depending on the model again: vintage tremolo (Fender type) like the 712, Floyd Rose like the 1221, and Wilkinson tremolo like the 812w.
They already had fingerboards with compound radius and a patented neck joint made in a way that there were no heel, kind of like the Washburn N4 Nuno Bettencourt signature that came out a year after the Pacifica.
Their prices were between 699$ to 2599$ nothing under.

The Yamaha Mike Stern model is certainly one of the nicest guitars I have ever played and heard. They can make a great guitar if they set their mind to it.
The Revstars are probably one of the most bang for your buck product line out there
I had a 6 series Pacific that was ridiculously good. It seems like all their instruments are considered quite good. This is coming from someone who has had a number of CS Fenders/Gibsons, Ernie Ball, Suhr, Tom Anderson, etc.
with some mods (cts pots, a mini toggle instead of the push pull, switchcraft jack socket and schaller locking tuners) my 611 hfm is still my "desert island guitar". I purchased it 11 years ago and still enoying it every day!

I was a bit shocked at the price point Yamaha is setting these at and would like to wait to see what I can find once people start selling them used. I’d love to get your opinion - How long do you think it will take for these to start hitting the used market, and how far down do you think price will go? By saying you think it will be a “steal”, I assume you think people will be somewhat displeased with it and have to take a hit trying to resell, what do you predict will not meet people’s expectations that they’ll sell them rather than keep them?
The new Pacifica looks promising, it would be cool if they make an HSH version. I recall Jeff Schroeder has one but it was custom built for him by Yamaha.
It was that long in the making, you only posted a video with a very similar custom Pacifica 12 days ago and all but begged them to do it, 12 day turnaround! Amazing!

I used to own a translucent blue Pacifica 604W and it was a great guitar. Had Wilkinson 2 point trem and Sperzel locking tuners. The only thing I replaced was the stock pickups for a Lukather HSS EMG pickup set and it was my main axe for quite some time. Wish they would have a model with flame or birdseye neck.
Hell yeah, I have always wanted them to really update this model. The bridge pickup not having the bezel is literally one thing I thought that could easily make it look a bit more modern but, the hard arm bevel is something I didn’t expect and really appreciate comfort wise.

Right? I have an early 2000’s Yamaha RGX with the tapered off neck joint. I can’t understand why they haven’t been making Pacificas like that. Glad they are incorporating that on these new ones finally

Superb playing, John. Damn -- I'm gonna have to investigate this new Pacifica! My Revstar and SA2200 appeared in the cluttered room I otherwise call a "studio" much the same way, responding to positive pro-level reviews like this one. Great tone! I'd like to see how it compares to an equivalent Fender Strat.
Great stuff my man. I dig you vibe and style. I'm only year deep on my YT journey. This thing is not easy. Crazy hard work, but I'm in this for the long haul. The music world is just a different beast now. My very first guitar was a Yamaha and it served me well. Good to see the Pacifica is still around and sounding great. I have an old 812w with the Wilkinson term. To this day it holds amazing tuning stability and is a great workhorse. I stupidly sold it to a mate and when he decided to shift it on grabbed it back. It’s never leaving again.

And the neck joint on these original guitars (not those after 2000) were patented, and way better than the new 2024 ones or any guitar of any brand as there were no heel on the neck joint!
Way back in the 90's I played bass/backing vocals for a melodic pop-punk power trio hailing from North Carolina called 30Deep! Our guitarist/lead vocalist exclusively played a Yamaha Pacifica Strat, w/ a weeny SD single coil sized humbucker mod in the bridge, and went bare bones (no pedals) into a Carvin X100B half stack (poor man's JCM800). Whilst touring to promote our album he eventually upgraded to a similarly modded MIM Fender Strat w/ the Pacifica as backup. I think around the same year I mutually did the same acquiring a second hand USA Custom G&L P-bass.

@@HiraManga right! I'm familiar with thier history. A lot of people like their PAC612's. I think people were looking for a professional range of the Pacifica. Just like the Revstar has a professional range. Of course Yamaha hit the ball park.

Dude...in the last year you have been trying to campaign for and appeal to Yamaha.
I truly hoped they were listening. They are a wonderful company that does a lot but music is at theor core and they really do put a lot of thought into trying to make instruments that players can use to create beautiful music.

I love my Pacifica . I’m hoping to get a professional and a Revstar at some point. Great guitars . I love all the features and the body cuts. Like the adjustment of the neck at the bottom best and stainless steel frets …locking tuners …looks great!
I'm surprised people didn't like the pickup ring on the custom pacifica. it's clunky but it adds visual balance against the horns of the strat. I much prefer the pickup ring layout vs this new one

Yamaha Pacifcas on intial release (91/92), had, the high-end Japanese Warmoth neck models and Japanese Mike Stern Signature model (with a maple fingerboard). And later Killer 1221 models.
So Yamaha are just, returning to this, with the new 2024 Yamaha Pacifcas.
Offering now a 2-peice body on the Professional Pacifica. They are now returning to the very best "Super-strat" options available today.

Guitar World magazine did an article just a couple hours ago about this guitar at the Namm show and shows the price at $3,700.
Yeah that shocked me. I was expecting the Pacifica Professional to be at the same price point as the Yamaha Revstar Professional ( ~$2,200, made in Japan) and the Standard Plus to be somewhere between that and the Pacifica 600 series that’s down at like $800. That’s a huge gap. But instead the Standard Plus, presumably not made in Japan, is $2,200 and the Professional at $3,700?! That’s a gutsy business decision. I’m not sure that’s going to work out,
however solid these guitars look. It’s just a huge gap to have no models between $800-2,200, and change the reputation of a model that’s perceived to be “beginner to intermediate level) by jumping that far between price points.
I just found out Yamaha lists weird MSRP's on their own website. On Sweetwater, the Standard Plus is listed for $1,350 and the Professional is $2,200, just like the Revstar Pro. Makes way more sense. Why do they list it that way on their product page? Just creates more confusion when there's that large of a gap between "MSRP" and actual dealer pricing.
You probably saw the update but Yamaha’s MSRP prices are just meaningless. Actual prices are $2,200 for Pro and $1,349 for Standard Plus after all

I have a USA custom Pacifica with a Warmoth Birds Eye maple neck and Tosewood fretboard. Green crazy weird flame maple top. Hum single single with a push push that changes the tone takes some mids out. I call it my SRV Mayer switch. Also has an acoustic fish man in the trem bridge

About damn time, the Pacifica has been without a high end version for way too long, the old 90's high end models were superb. Not digging that pickguard with that sharp straight cutoff though, I would absolutely have to do something about that.

I like the color and smaller knobs of the prototype but that's just being picky. It sounds fantastic. How the neck feels in the hands is what will truly decide it for me. I currently play Yamaha's (only) and have for the last 10 years.

If you can find an early 1990 Pacifica, you'll see that the neck joint is way better than any guitar on the planet.
I only knew Pacificas as the other guitar available at the mall music store (when I bought my first plywood Dean strat-o-copy) and was probably the better instrument. I've never even known they had better than entry level... but that guitar looks and sounds beautiful!

Guitar Mag just reporting a retail of $2.2k - $3.4k U.S.... Used to own a 90's RGZ612, a Mike Stern and recently bought a PAC612 last-gen (now) Pacifica. Loved Yamaha for producing utterly playable guitars that beat the competition hands-down on price and features. My PAC612 is by far my favourite guitar that I've owned and plays / sounds like a dream. Shame they were ignored for the most part by the buying public. Seems like a risky departure to price Pacifica at this level... hope they keep the mid-price models with the insane value they're known for.

I won a crushed mirror finished Pacifica in the mid-nineties (from a local music store that... had it in stock for a very long time). HSH, Floyd rose locking trem system, reverse headstock with matching paint... all the features. It was clearly designed to be a hotrod to compete with the Ibanez RGs, Jacksons, Charvels, and the like, in the era of peak Grunge... which I'm sure lead to the re-evaluation of the line so quickly to the budget line most people know it as. Mine was a great shred machine that was sadly stolen not long after along with nearly every other instrument I owned.

What people don't know is that Yamaha Pacifica guitars were high-end guitars when they were first made in 1990. Yamaha endorsed guitar virtuoso Michael Lee Firkins and made the Pacifica line exclusively for him as his guitar signature series! Later on (5 or 6 years after) they made a Telecaster-like model for Mike Stern.
Those original Pacifica's had nothing to do with the ones that came since early 2000 that were budget guitars made afterwards.
Those original Pacifica's were made in the USA and, depending on the models, they had Seymour Duncan pickups or DiMarzio pickups, they had three types of tremolo bridges, depending on the model again: vintage tremolo (Fender type) like the 712, Floyd Rose like the 1221, and Wilkinson tremolo like the 812w.
They already had fingerboards with compound radius and a patented neck joint made in a way that there were no heel, kind of like the Washburn N4 Nuno Bettencourt signature that came out a year after the Pacifica.
Their prices were between 699$ to 2599$ nothing under.
So, those new Pacifica's are some sort of re-creation of the original ones that were the top high end of Yamaha guitars but with the 2024 technology.
I have a few older Pacificas. I don't even know the models but one is the Tele shaped natural HH Rosewood fingerboard and I have a black one too, the 302??something Tele shaped red finish with gold hardware, and a SSH S-shaped gold hardware with a dark trans blue finish. All of them were cheap and they are ALL AMAZING GUITARS. The necks are so easy to play, they are slim without being too small. There are a few on the Used Guitar Center page and Reverb.
I love all Yamaha products, from musical instruments to motorbikes. I'm so happy about this release, no more monopoly of Fender on this market segment.
Now they need a PRO+FR model (Floyd Rose), then I would be interested.
Have a look at the Sweetwater video regarding the pickups. A bit more backstory. An employee/engineer of Rupert Neeve was making the pickups, if I’ve got it right.

Great playing as always John. I grew up learning guitar on a Yamaha classical that was older than me so I have great respect for the brand. Glad to see something like this bec the Pacifica brand has always felt synonymous to entry level to mid range as you said and the design didn’t really catch my attention. This one I quite like and I really dig the color of the prototype you have. The HSS pickup config is also my favorite and surprisingly is the one missing from my collection. Just haven’t found one that looks and sounds inspiring. This might be the one. 😊 Thanks for sharing.

@@HiraManga That’s interesting. Thanks for sharing. I was just at their showroom last night hoping to see one of these but only found their current line. One of the reasons those models didn’t appeal to me was how the body was too edgy/cornered? Not sure what’s the more appropriate term. My wife wanted me to try the gold P90 Revstar but I held back bec I knew I might end up picking it up instead of waiting for these new Pacifica models.😅
I wish that Yamaha had made these in those colors like the prototypes one of which you have there and the reverse headstock ones are so cool. Step in the right direction but they’ve missed the mark a little. I would have bought those two prototypes immediately.

I agree. My guess is that it made the guitar too edgy. Perhaps we’ll see one on an HH or HSH model.

My first electric guitar was a Yamaha Pacifica (112 I think, came with a Yamaha practise amp as a bundle). Great guitar, that I unfortunately cut up when I got a sudden obsession for Steinbergers haha! I'd love to get a higher-end one, this sounds great!

Exceptionally cool guitar. Nice to see the direct mounted humbucker, heel adjusted truss rod and back to a script logo. Would have liked to see a locking bridge like the Suhr Pete Thorn or Charvel Guthrie, and I'd prefer the old school Pacifica Z style inlays. Neve pickups sound great, didn't even know they made pickups! Looking forward to seeing this on the channel more.

Sweetwater has many details on their website and in a video. the Japanese version is priced the same as Fender ultra Strats.
My Pacifica 611H from 2012 is the only guitar that sits outside a case on a stand, why ? Because it’s my go to for noodling, still totally stock, but still a stellar instrument, never needs tuning, never had to adjust the truss rod, it’s built like a tank and does what it does and does it really well.

@@HiraManga there was nothing budget about the 611, Grover locking tuners, tusq nut, Seymour Duncan pickups I own A USA Fender and the 611’s appointments and build quality are up the with the Stratocaster standards of the same era at 1.2 the price
And a H-H version was cool, If they Ever make one.

I really like the concept of this Pacifica! (Long time MS Pac admirer.) The _one_ thing that irks is that "slashed" pickguard below the bridge humbucker. Perhaps it's meant to evoke a kind of "cousin" to Revstar ... but I don't like the "slashed" pickguard on any instrument - very offputting asethetically. (OK, I'm shallow.) (Or have taste! Take your pick.)
I originally wanted to upgrade to Ibanez AZ2204 series. but after seeing these beauties announced I'll definitely upgrade my 612 for the professional. and did i mention that the pink color is the best out of the bunch??!!
Most promising guitar ever hit the market. I was going to buy a p90 standard revstar but looks like I ll buy one of these instead.
People have been saying that a high end pac with stainless steel frets should be a no brainer after the revstar did so well because of its futures, quality and price.

I have a 20+ year old Taiwanese Pacifica 604W that was cheap, but it has a great Wilkinson bridge, Sperzel tuners, and a pretty fat neck.

There is a lot to like here, but the one thing I hate is the lack of a sperate tone knobs for the bridge and neck/middle pickup. It gives you so much more control in a live situation.I don't want to be riding my tone knob all night when I'm switching positions.

Has anyone else noticed how many brands (mainstream or new) have driven towards the boutique market? I like that the competition has made premium features (roasted neck, stainless steel frets, locking tuners etc.) more accessible at a cheaper cost.
But the thing is high end guitars may cost around the same as each other but the build quality and design of some brands really outshine the rest. It’ll be interesting to see if Yamaha have done something really great here or if it’s just another Ibanez AZ tier coming to the market.

I can't tell you how disappointed i am that the 'pro' version isn't based on the Paul Hindmarsh model with a reverse headstock. For DOUBLE the price of the Standard Plus, it REALLY needs a reverse and preferably layback headstock with no string trees, i'd buy one in a heartbeat...
Nice review. John, explain to me about the neck situation. In the 80s and 90s everyone that played fast wanted a wizard neck; slim and flat radius. Clearly flatter is easier get all the strings close and play lighter. Why is the new trend in the opposite direction? Fat necks feel so odd to me now. What is the appeal to fast players?
I dig these. I've never dug a Pacifica before. Nice looks. Sound nice. Seem nice. No clue of the price and how I would feel about it. But Yamaha seems to have reasonable prices. I bought my niece a super cheap Yamaha acoustic for Christmas. It was really really nice for the super low price. I was impressed.

When you have a model that has a “beginner to intermediate” reputation that is topping out at $800, and then you introduce higher line versions but the next price point is $2,200, and the one above that $3,700 (according to Yamaha’s website) I think that’s a really overconfident business gamble.
@@BradMiller007 Okay yeah, Yamaha is just weird on how they list weird MSRP's on their own website. On Sweetwater, the Standard Plus is listed for $1,350 and the Professional is $2,200, just like the Revstar Pro. Makes way more sense. But really, Yamaha should take off the MSRP numbers on their website if it's not what the new dealer price is.

They build incredible guitars .I've been a Yamaha player for years...Just yesterday I emailed Yamaha asking g why Guitar Center doesn't carry their electrics saying IF THEY DID they'd sell like hotcakes because of the quality first and value for that quality..then today I see this..just Hooray for Yamaha.I love em..
