    Hi Gabriel, I am looking for an inset stove for wood burning. I am torn between ,Di Lusso R4, Heta Inspire 40 and Stovax Riva 2 40. What would you choose?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  9 місяців тому +1

      They’re all very similar, but for woodburning the Di-Lusso definitely has its advantages. I’ve not used the other 2, but my gut feeling is they’re slightly more flexible, but also slightly less focused. Only you know which you want to prioritise.

    The black dots actually serve a purpose. They help spread heat evenly across the glass and I would assume across the stove door by extension. Wonder is this important in free standing log store stoves to help prevent warping given their weight?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Рік тому

      That’s really interesting. I don’t believe they’re required on stoves as most don’t have them (and replacement glasses often don’t have them at all), but that’s so interesting that they have a purpose!
      Every day is a school day!
      What do they do, how and do they need to be all over the glass to be affective?

    • @JJ452
      @JJ452 Рік тому +1

      @@TheTortoise They are called frits and they do a number of things depending how the glass is used.
      Fundamentally they exist to transfer heat more evenly across the entire surface glass as they absorb heat faster than glass. This prevents optical distortion of the light when the glass is heated unevenly (straight lines look curved or bowed inwards toward the centre) and helps prevent thermal shock when transiting between temperatures as the glass expands/shrinks at a similar rate across it's whole surface at the same time. This is why it is a solid black band the whole way around (connected to transfer heat) and then the dots are added to transition head away from the solid band and into the glass itself at a slower pace. Normally these are only really problems for larger pieces of glass or curved glass. If you check out your car you will see them on most of the windows.
      Frits can also be used as a rougher surface for glue to stick to, a blocker for UV light prevent damage for what is under them (usually glue which breaks down in direct sunlight over time) or can be used to reflect heat back to the source for example either reducing sunlight coming in or to prevent heat from an oven escaping.
      Occasionally they're just added not because of the properties required of them but because sometimes glass isn't optically perfect and they distract/cover from manufacturing defects.
      Why does this stove have them? I'm honestly not sure - I don't think the glass is curved or glued from the video. My initial assumption was perhaps the log store under it and the weight would mean the steel would warp over time if heated unevenly and they were added to heat the glass (and therefore door by extension) at a similar rate during initial lighting. Ultimately could just be for style!

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Рік тому +1

      That’s so interesting to read, thanks for talking me through it. I believe in this case it is about style, but the purpose of them on larger pieces of glass is fascinating! 👍

    Hey i'm in the process of redoing the seals on my jotul f400- have you done a video on this model or think of a DIY book that would
    be helpful for the process.

      I haven’t yet, but I could do a video on dismantling an old cast iron stove and re-building it. That would be quite fun to do actually.
      I’ll add it to my list and keep an eye on eBay for an appropriate stove to try it on. I like the idea of an old Morsø Squirrel to try it on, as I have done it before at least 3 or 4 times 👍

    Which stove would you recommend for burning peat turf, a wood burner or a multifuel?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  11 місяців тому

      Definitely multi-fuel. But do go careful, I’ve dealt with lots of people in Ireland who burn a lot of peat. I’m not sure why, but they seem to burn out grates faster than anyone else I’ve encountered. My father guessed that peat could be the cause, and it’s certainly backed up by every conversation I’ve had about it.
      I don’t think it’s a disaster, I guess the key thing will be clearing the ash, and using a stove with some good control to avoid over firing. You could look at a Clock stove, because I have never seen a more solid grate in a stove. Ever!

    First time watching your channel, do you have a company that sells wood stoves/ wood burners?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  11 місяців тому

      My family have been doing stoves forever, and I did own a shop which my family now own and run (I help a bit now). But I try to distance myself from selling stoves now, so that I can focus on creating something that is a bit more separate, independent and impartial.
      If it’s helpful to say, most of the stoves I test including this one, my family do not sell.

      @@TheTortoise I am thinking about getting a small stove or wood burner , unfortunately know nothing about them or as I call this situation a salespersons dream, like most people try to do home work then realise so many UA-cam channels saying so much it becomes confusing, of course that might just be me , everyone else is smarter than I , benefits for others = I make others look good. Sorry for long email but only a little sorry , someone like me where the hell do I start ? My head is saying look at the cost of the wood to see if it’s cost affective to buy a stove , are we allowed to burn wood ? Is there wood bricks as an option and what is the cost of those ? Live own my own so only have old age pension, trying to find something that would reduce my electric and gas bills , boiler broke down last winter so used more electricity which was so expensive, so looking for something that would replace the electric fire but at the same time heat more than one room , can you or will you do a video that could explain to stupid people like me, average cost of wood or pellets or fire bricks I mean the ones to burn not the bricks around the unit , how much does it cost on an average week to heat the place, obviously depending on the size of the house, finally are you still awake , what is the name of your family’s shop or website, is there a second hand marketplace ? Is it best to buy new ? So many questions sorry , is this the longest email you’ve ever had , I’ve got to win something in life before the final destination = dying is easy, comedy is hard, if no reply I understand you’re probably on the second bottle of whiskey trying to get through this novel.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  11 місяців тому

      Okay, yes there is lots in that.
      Explaining running costs is an impossibility because the variation is literally endless, anyone who gives any definitive advice on this is making a big mistake, because it is impossible to know. Having said that there is a way that this could be a potentially viable heating solution that would also end up very economical.
      I would start by looking to see whether you can get hold of cheap logs. Ideally you will either have trees yourself, or you will have access to a farmer etc and can get wood almost free or very cheap. You can then perhaps dry it yourself etc.
      If this were possible, then you could then find a fairly low cost wood only stove which is capable of serious use. With all this you would then have something that would genuinely save you money and could become (like an AGA cooker) the primary heat source that is always chugging away in the background. My hope is that would significantly reduce any other heating costs you have and also provides you with an ambiance and focal point that was nice for the evenings too. It would take some work, but it is a properly viable system if it would work for you.
      With regard to all the other stuff: pellets, wood bricks, multi-fuel etc etc. Just forget it, if you had easy and disposable income then there are loads of other options, but given your brief, the above is where I would start.

      @@TheTortoise Thanks for reply and detailed one also, appreciated kind soul, live in Devon by the sea , so don’t have access to trees or farmer , if you ever find yourself in Devon more than welcome to pop in , looked at a few of your videos this morning for the first time , a detailed soul you are , has anyone ever done a video in regards to the cost per week depending on what one burns be it natural looks or these wood blocks or pellets , is there a stove or burner that will take anything? I was brought up in a house same house actually with a coal fire and years back took it out for a gas fire , we all learn the hard way, so was thinking about a small stove for that area, at least I’ve got a chimney, well it’s a start , is there regulations now of what one is allowed to burn ? Very surprised nobody has covered this in a blog or vlog which ever term one uses , you never mentioned your family’s business name or website or are they just too expensive for people like me ,

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  11 місяців тому

      As I say you can’t really do a blog/vlog etc on fuel consumption, as it is a simile of “how long is a piece of string”, there is literally no valid answer. The closest thing I have devised is my test on a net of logs, but even in that there are probably a million variables 😆.
      There aren’t any stoves that burn any of those fuels, but you’re best to stick to standard logs.
      As I say, I have distanced myself from retail to focus on this independent channel. I don’t advertise any shops including my family’s.
