's surname has the same root), i.e. Slavs historically saw Germans as the people whose words they couldn't understand.

Actually fun fact, why Slavs usually call Germany as "Niemcy" "Nemčija" and similar stuff is because the old Slavic tribes, when they came in contact with the German tribes, they couldn't communicate with eachother. So the word derives for the word "mute" which in Slavic Languages is "Nem". So basically, we Slavs call German "land of the mutes" because we weren't able to communicate with them

I find it extremely funny that Switzerland are being neutral even in their own official name.
It is not about neutrality. We just have a german speaking part, a french part and an italian part. And some rumantsch speaking people(Technically a part of germany, france and italy). And each part has its own name for the country. All of the names are official because it would be weird for others to call it one way and noone wants to call it switzerland. (Wait, you are right, it is some kind of neutrality...) And we can't really change the name because we would have a voting about it and nobody would vote for any other name than the one of their own language. To have 4 official names is just a compromise...
And about the "official" name confederatio helvetica. He is kinda wrong because we have also 4 different translations for that one + the latin one, and all of them are official.

There is no (more) Swaziland. I've seen a report that sometimes letters was sent to Swaziland instead of Switzerland

In Russian we call Germany "Germania", but we call German people - "nyemcy" which literal meaning was "nyemye" - someone who can't speak (our language).

It's not that the original words have no relation to the english words, it's the other way around.
that annoyed me too. His view of the world is warped: what a country names itself is anything but weird: everything else is the strangeness. It is a separate internal question to ask, why in our country do we call ourselves and our country what we do. Eg America (… Eric?), Bharat, Myanmar, etc, and Deutschland… kommt ja von Deutsch, aber wies heißt die Sprache Deutsch… Lösung: _Deutsch_ = deut-isch; deut (ahd?) = Volk. Daher kommen die Wörter deuten/deutlich: etwas dem Volk verständlicher zu machen. Maybe there’s a similar explanation with Suomi (which is also derived from the name of the language: maybe Suomi derives from ‘folk’??).

The original spelling was "thiodisk" (stemming of "thioda" the people, so it's a parallel to "völkisch" you can see how the ending looks similar, it also was latinized to "theodisce" probably conflating it with "dicere" = to speak) and morphed over several stages like tiutsch and teutsch to finally deutsch. It also has some connections to "teutonic", which refers to one of the migrating germanic tribes the romans had so much fun with, when they went into gaul to settle in a better climate (and got mostly killed for that wish). But yes it means the tongue of the people or Sprache des Volks...
It was meant to separate the literally germanic (as in ancient german tribes) languages from the romanic dialects spoken in "France" when both were part of the Frankish kingdom/Empire under Charlemagne and his heirs... Originally what today is germany started out as Eastern Francia but in a few generations the new term had gotten the better over the old one and Francia was relegated to a minor regional description (encompassing what today is Hesse, at least the better part if not all of Thuringia and Nothern Bavaria, which has retained the name as Ober-, Mittel- and Unterfranken!) "We" spoke like those of the common folk, the "others" in the Frankish land spoke the language of the Romans and of the higher class/nobility, which created one of these "us vs them" situations and created a kind of communal feeling.
We call it pineapple because it looks like a pine cone, and we used to call pine cones "apple of the pine." The Spanish also use pina alongside ananas (pina colada, ring any bells?), so you're quite wrong--it has a bit to do with pines.
We maintain we are correct about calling it a pineapple because we own the English language, not you. We'll call it whatever we like thanks. The same logic can be applied to country names--obviously the native English speaker is going to look at it from a perspective afforded to him by the English language, I'd have thought that was rather obvious!

This is mostly done from an English perspective, but I love how Dutch people often correct English-speaking countries with "It's not Holland, but the Netherlands, Holland is only part of the Netherlands", meanwhile like a score of different countries calls all of the Netherlands for Holland officially

Finland was originally the name for the southwestern part of Finland, the area around Turku. The province is even called today in Swedish Egentliga Finland, which means something like Finland proper. Finland-at-large didn't have a name. It was a part of the Österland province which included parts of Estonia and Ingermanland also.

There are many more countries like this, for example Albania in Albanian is Shqiperia, Greece is Hellas, China is Zhongguo, Hungary is Magyarorszag, Armenia is Hayastan, Montenegro is Crna Gora and India is Bharat (even though there's a lot of different languages in India so they probably don't all call India the same).
The word for Germany in Slavic languages doesn't actually come from a tribe name, it has a much different origin that I think is cool (I may be biased because I'm a Slav). So Slavs originally lived near the Germans (modern day Poland, Belarus and parts of Ukraine) and the Germans spoke a language that the Slavs could not understand. So they called them 'people who cannot speak' or 'mute people', and the word for 'mute' in the original common Slavic language was 'nem' (still is in many Slavic languages). In contrast, the Slavs called themselves 'people who can speak' and the word for 'letter' or possibly 'language' was 'slovo'. Add a few suffixes, and today in most of the Slavic languages Germans are Nemcy and Slavs are Sloveni (or something similar)

Also, in Romanian language, even if we call Germany as a country just one way("Germania"), we can call the the actual German people in 2 ways: one is "germani", which comes from the way we call the country, but the other is "nemti", which is related to how the Slavic languages call Germany(with the "t" pronounced similar as the Polish "c" in "Niemcy")
The Polish word ,,Niemcy'' means both Germans (the people) and Germany which supports this theory, as a country cannot be ,,mute'' but the people can. Btw don't you think that the Slavs call themselves in the coolest way possible? I mean the word ,,slovo'' is linked with: being able to speak, being famous and loud, being formidable and the glory itself?

have to correct you about switzerland tho. They used to call them self "Die Eidgenossenschaft" which roughly translates to "the ough cooperative". the first 3 cantons to swear that oath of brotherhood and unity where Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. they quickly got the image of being utter savages amongst the german and austrian kingdoms, as they (especially habsburg) tried to conquer them. the habsburgs didn't want to call this group of region anything that has to do with god , so the simply denigrated the closest canton to them as "schweit" for switzerland or "Schweiter" for swiss. Sooner or later the swiss stood to it and where like "so what? we are schweiter!".

In Polish the reason why we call Germany a "Niemcy" instead of Germany is really simple, when polish tribes first met germanic tribes we couldn't understand them in any way so they was silent for us, or mute i don't know how to translate that...and the word "Niemcy" is from word "niemy" what can be translate as silent or mute.

Very interesting that The Baltic languages (Into-European group) seem to have the name for their country come from a similar root to The Finnish Languages (Finland, Estonia) (Finno-Ugric group). As Suomi and Soome are likely related to Sami and Samoyed (meaning "The People"), I'm guessing that The Balts borrowed their analogous words from Finnish.

This was divided into White (Biała), Red (Czerwona) and Black (Czarna)
In slavic languages White Ruthinia would be very very close to Biała Ruś which later transformed to Białoruś (in Polish) or Bielarus.
Black and Red Ruthinia merged to form Ukraine which is not surprising since those were more geographical terms than national. All Ruthinia in the beginning formd a single nation from which White Ruthinia split relativly late (and not politicaly but culturaly - at the time were talking about all or most of Ruthinia was part of Lithuania which itself was part of Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth).
Ever since Moscovites started to make foares (military) into Ruthinia they started to call themselves Russians.
In Polish however there remaind and remains to this day a distinction

Ruś for Ruthinia
Rosjanie for Russians
Rusini for Ruthinians (modern day Ukrainians and Belarusians) - that term of course is not commonly used anymore since it makes little sense in todays world. It mearly exists.

In my country (Croatia) we call Poland "Poljska", with the same "field" root - literally meaning and roughly translated into english "Country of the filelds". Also "Poljaci" as nation ("People of the fields")

Estonians have all kind of weird names for european countries. Saxomaa, Rootsi, Vennemaa, Taani etc. Sorry for the spelling. I am not Estonian, but I remember the wierd country names they used for some of the countries. So Estonia is a special bunch of people. ;)

TheBarser I know that you apoligised but I correct you Saksamaa and Venemaa. (in estonian words are usually readed how they're written) + those names are coming from historical orgins like Russians are called Venelased. Venelased were a nation who lived next to estonia, behind lake Peipsi.
