  • Demo of G&L ASAT Classic S (USA) with comparison of alnico and MFD pickups. Full disclosure, I'm an ordinary average guy and mediocre guitarist. Some stuff played in this is beyond my skill, but striving to take it to the next level.
All tracks played through a mic'd Johnson Millenium amp
Tracks were either clean or light distortion with stock "SRV" patch. Yes it is a modeling amp and it is old, but what a sweet amp it is.
    No pedals used.
Video/sound production done by my 13 year old son Blake. Picture art by my 13 year old daughter Katelyn.

G&L, the guitar communities best kept secret.

Let me be the next person to say, 4 years later, thanks so much for this great comparison. It's really well done and clarified so many things for me.

"Actually", I've never seen anyone able to play those fast runs on "Sultans" with a flat pick...impressive! (And you've helped me decide...G&L alnicos for me!)

Thanks for making this, I love how it basically shows that the MFD gives you a tube screamer kind of push without a pedal

The clarity of the MFD neck pickup is amazing.

I know this is a couple years old now, but thanks for making and sharing this. Good playing, and very helpful to compare. I enjoyed watching, and hearing the differences!

Thank you for a really illustrative comparison. Not fancy, maybe, but one of clearest and most effective demonstrations I've seen. I also appreciate your modesty, but bear in mind there are plenty of us working to get as good as you are.

You may have not hit every single note on Sultans of Swing but you did capture the drive and the spirit. Congrats.
With respect to G&L alnicos vs MFDs, I have Legacy with the alnicos and also an ASAT with the MFDs. I prefer the MFD sounds because they are fatter with a lot more voicing available, especially if you tweek the individual poles ( a crazy good option with MFDs).
But, in this particular demo you made the alnicos sing and showed the benefit of having both available to get just the right sound for a particular song. Again great playing!

If I had only one pickup to work with I’d choose MFD because it’s more versatile. Alnico’s do have that unique high end chime to them that I love so much though. Hard to pick!

Thank you Rob - I'm a big G&L fan and have always bought the Legacy over the S500, but what's your preference? I'm considering an ASAT currently, but I suppose you can't really go wrong with either! I hope to see more of your videos in the future.

Thanks for the kind words. I also have a Legacy and an S-500, I'll do a comparison of those sometime in the near future. It's hard to say which I prefer. The S-500 is a little more versatile, just like the ASAT with MFDs is more versatile. The MFD pickups in the ASAT are not the same as those in the S-500 (except for the middle pickup in the Classic S model). MFDs in both are a little more beefy/warmer than their alnico counterparts. I like both, though.

Actually Silent Rob I only have the S500 but I've had other strats before and I fully agree with your assessment. I find that the S500 can get very close to a traditional single coil by partially rolling off the bass and by using a compressor with the attack dialed in fully.

Digging MFD on leads but the I prefer the ASAT pu’s for the rhythm
I have found that with thr MFD pu’s you need to roll of volume more to vary the sound.
    Nice jams! Thanks great video

You don’t “need” to. That’s your preference. Or just by a Fender or ASAT with alnicos.

  • @charles3200

I have a Fender Strat with Alnico's and just bought an ASAT Classic Tribute w MFDs. The Strat is definitely brighter while the ASAT is darker and definitely louder. The Strat sounds a bit thin sometimes to me. Great playing man! I'm interested in which one of those is your fav?

I sold the alnico model and kept the MFDs. I like both, but the MFDs can do things the alnicos can't do.

Nice demo. Both sound great. I need a tele with the classic tele sounds . Can I get that with MFD’s?

    • @actuallysilentrob2570
      @actuallysilentrob2570  Рік тому

MFDs can get close to classic tele sound, but not exact match. That said, they can do things the alnico pickups can't. I kept the MFD model.

It’s all personal preference, but I have the asat classic s alnico, 2 legacys, and 1 s500. I do not like the mfd pickups at all. I actually bought alnicos from G&L and converted the s500 into a legacy

MFDs utterly destroy alnicos. People like the trad thing though. I don't get it.
