I am a recreational Bowler whose visits to the local lanes have been sporadic at best. Despite my best efforts, the hook has been something that has always eluded me. After watching this video, the latest of many, I am FINALLY bowling curly ones! My scores were shit, but I didn't care at all, 'cause I bowled curly ones ALL NIGHT LONG!!! THANK YOU!!!
Just watching this video and watching closely how these people released the ball helped me understand how to release to get hook a lot better than any tutorial video I've seen. Thanks for making this video :)
The wrist guard only helps the bowler not to break the wrist during delivery, believing this will impart more lift to the ball, this is an old school thought. The critical aspect is the thumb has to be pitched(lateral/forward or reverse) at a correct angle accompany by correct finger spans and this will allow the bowler to hold the ball with the fingers below the ball equator during delivery. Another factor is ensuring the bowler is comfortable handling the ball weight and a strong wrist helps. Happy bowling
Akira Kobayashi and a little boy who was married was one another of them and they came and pray for children who have become to prayer and he named is Chris and he beauty is not only good but if it comes out there Andrew and pray to Andrew
Excelente, no necesariamente al hacer un lanzamiento el vídeo se debe mostrar solo las moñonas (Chuzas), es muy valido con el fin de ir mejorando el lanzamiento, muchas gracias, con este vídeo he mejorado mucho mi juego
All these tutorials tell you to have your wrist and thumb behind the ball at the point of release.....this guy has his wrist above the ball AND palm facing him and that microsecond where his fingers push off the ball give the spin wtf.....
You MUST have our hand BEHIND ball and that's exactly what w can see here. Behind ball means your index finger is pointing ground - your wrist is not broken. If you break your wrist your index finger will point backwards. To have a rotation you can't break your wrist. And when you watch all these good bowlers they start with they hand behind ball (in sense of not broken wrist) and actually BEHIND BALL (like at her back) , but when they release their wrist is still not broken, finger index pointing down, but they get from back of the ball SLIGHTLY to the side, their hand exactly on release will look kinda as if they tried to hand shake pins
Richard Salazar this is not a good video on how to (properly) hook a bowling ball. These releases were used 30+ years ago, but not ideal with modern balls/cores.
Nearly every one of these releases are sloppy. The ball bounces down the lane from their release point. That could be the hand supports cover up the feel of a clean release. The "V" stretch between index and thumb are facing the pins which leads to topping the ball. The V needs to be facing the right side at release.
Try to roll the ball by allowing the middle and ringer staying below/on the equator of the ball and ensure the two fingers rotate from 6 to 4 position and slightly uncup the wrist at the point of release. This will impart more revs and stronger roll to the ball. Happy bowling.
***** we all know about that, just that none of us is able to do that, that's another reason why most of us are using the wrist support, even the lefty Daniel with 5" span, he is not even able to have his fingers close to the equator
These are great shots at release but what about the approach grip? I heard your hand should be on the bottom of the ball, cupping? It would be nice to include a little higher view next time.
Yah I watched other videos on how to hook a ball and they all say to be at the bottom not side ways like this bowler is. I thought his approach is the incorrect way of hooking it?
I thought this was a high speed video and was surprised to find out that it is only recording at 60 frames a second which is 2x of normal. That is not high speed at all, as I am a photographer a high speed camera depending on needs can capture a bullet in flight at over 6,000 frames a second ( or a hummingbird showing the wings beating clearly at each and every steep), and that's what I call high speed. What is needed is around 300 frames a second which would allow us to actually see clearly what is happening. Of course you can't get one for less than about 10 grand but the quality is soo much better. The only downside is that you need a lot of extra lighting. It's a good video but the blur is from to slow of a shutter speed. If I was taking the video I would use two cameras in synch one very high speed so we can clearly see how to put spin on the ball and a much slower speed camera for the remainder of the shot.
Owh alright, thanks :) I bowl casually but, have always been interested in improving the highest I've bowled is 100. Is it possible to use the 1st knuckle on a common bowling alley bowling ball made for the 2nd knuckle?
Jeremy john you could, but only for a short time solution which would mean you would have to buy a 1st knuckle ball later on. I wouldn't recommend it though if you are only casual and are not planning on getting your own ball. If you want to you can try two handed bowling which you can also use on house balls:)
If you are serious about competing and you want to get the best shot down to perfection, and be the best you can be - First read my post earlier - contains a great deal of info. A tip help ball )1st Knuckle in) allows for the best control of rotation and the Thumb Pitch Angle (Hole drilled for the Thumb) allows for accurately consistent speed, BEST ADVICE - Get your ball drilled by a real IBPSA Pro-Shop ( International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association) - and if they don't actually watch you throw a ball for at least three or four frames - Go somewhere else that will.
rpm was calculated by counting how many frames it took for 1 full revolution, video was shot with 60 frame per second, which is equal to 3600 per minute, if it took 15 frames for 1 revolution, that's equal to 240 rpm Here is how it works 3600 (frames in 1 minute) divided by 15 (frames it took for 1 full revolution) = to 240 RPM (revolution per minute)
Yhat left handed guy with a yellow ball gave it away as he released the ball, it was spinning from that final release from his fingers before it hits the ground. The spinning is controlled last by his hand and fingers.
No matter how many times I try to throw a curve ball it's always a fail 😭 one time it was so bad my bowling ball flew and bounce two lanes down! 😱😄🤷🏻♀️ since then I stop trying to throw a curve ball unless no ones around lol
for those who's complaining on wrist support: do you think Pete Weber and the others who's wearing gloves are so success because of that tool? do you think they would be not that great without it?
dana rivera ok, let's see these video... ua-cam.com/video/xAbHP6gS5_8/v-deo.html or this ua-cam.com/video/BbfmzjcPpvs/v-deo.html I'm not saying he is using it now, but along he's career he did as so many others are did or still doing...
dana rivera If you read the rest of duffywolves' comment, you would see that he said Weber used a glove. He/she never said that he used a wrist support.
Let me chime in here. Pete Weber does not use a wrist support (since the mid 1990's if not earlier). He uses a glove. A glove that is specifically designed for his fingers and drilled for that...in other words if he removed it his finger holes would be very loose! I would be he is the only one that does this or if there are others is very rare. There was a time in the late 90's/early 2000's when a glove with exposed fingers was thought to be an advantage but hardly anyone does this now. Pete Weber used to use a wrist support in the early 90's and into the 80's but that was then and the game changed from urethane to resin for one . In fact I would argue a wrist support is nothing but a training device and will hurt most in the long run. However, there are some successful professionals that use it and could beat me and most of you. Most of the league bowlers I have seen even good ones the wrist support is a burden. It may work on a house shot but many of these bowlers they feel it's the only way to get behind the ball. Then again, technology and times changed by at least 1990 and many of the ball drillers didn't drill for comfort and understand pitches. Back in the 80's with "thumb inserts" then the invention of "slugs" changed the gameIf you get a real pro shop driller which hope to God by 20 years should be 90% of everywhere, can drill you a real bowling ball. This will take time with trial and error in years to understand what your fingers are doing, wrist and game is doing.
Yea . I agree with ur statement . But some peoples need that wrist support because of their "broken" wrist. Thts why the wrist support exists and supports those broken wrist .
i personally feel that if you're wearing a wrist brace while bowling, you are at an unfair advantage. It completely takes away the challenge of repeating the same angle of the wrist every time by simply locking it in place....
sportsfanatic8792 if it really does have advantaged and make it easier to strike, you think those pro bowler would not use it to win more title? this is a supporting device which help bowler with weaker wrist to keep their hand position at a stronger position or as a training guide. You still need to repeat shot to have consistent release, speed, timing, rotation etc. This only help to keep broken wrist at a stronger position. You can still cup the ball more with the device on and make inconsistent release. DON"T THINK OF IT AS EARL Not everyone going to have advantage with wrist support device, some people hate it and can't bowl with it, for those who do cup and uncup release can't really uncup with the wrist support. You can try to put one on to see if you can get any advantage and then come back and comment again.
notsoproshop honestly hav yet to meet someone that it's harder to bowl with one on haha. its like riding a bike with training wheels vs a bike without them
sportsfanatic8792 can you make a turn faster with the training wheel? NO!!! Wrist support is good training tool for beginner, for advance bowler, I don't see this help much, if you haven't try it, don't make a judgment!
I'm a little confused about grip... Do you want grip holes that are "tight" enough where if you squeeze your fingers in the ball can hang purely on the friction of the holes with your fingers? Or do you want holes that require some squeezing on the part of your ball hand in order to keep your fingers from slipping out of the holes? And Please don't say something in-between.. cause that's not an answer.
+swish1onu Too bad, the answer is in between. You want enough space that you can put your fingers in a bit further, but that they won't fall out if they are bent back. The thumb you want snug, but not tight. Minimal grip throughout the swing is the goal.
notsoproshop oh my that's pretty expensive, do you happen to know of any cheaper cameras than can produce something similar but not as great of course? Trying to see exactly what my hand is doing at release, TY if you can, great vids!
I am not a pro or anything. Hell I'm not even a novice bowler, but isnt that improper technique from what bowling coaches teach because there hands are sideways at release instead of their thumbs being at about the eleven o'clock position and their ring and middle finger at the 5 oclock?(edit) After watching further, not all display what I thought to be improper technique. I don't like the releases in these videos either. The hand is on the side almost a suitcase release. From videos I watch of pros is that I want to be behind the ball under the ball like tossing a football with a turn of the wrist not on side of ball.

Cool vid. You can Rev the ball all you want. It's the consistency that brings your average up.
This video has taught me how to properly release correctly but I always have a curve but it's not that strong like yours
Excelente, no necesariamente al hacer un lanzamiento el vídeo se debe mostrar solo las moñonas (Chuzas), es muy valido con el fin de ir mejorando el lanzamiento, muchas
gracias, con este vídeo he mejorado mucho mi juego
Muchas gracias
I get the idea of how one releases the ball but when I throw one myself I look like a dumb ass xD
Isaiah Towers me too...and it needs more practices.
I’m trying to get good too but I go like once every few months and I just don’t get better. I’m also 14 so I can’t drive and have no money😐
Great video! Other videos have to much blah blah blah before getting to what people really want to see, which is someone actually throwing a hook.
Yes, it's so hard to actually get information into your brain. Everything just leaves, or doesn't enter. But this is great. :)

Agreed, there is not a really quality release on this video, granted I'm not perfect either but most of these are egregiously bad.

Thanks but I’ll stick with my 19mph straight ball!
Juan Hugh Jass lol
Not going to work as good btw I have a 500 rpm and I throw 19 mph. Giving me more entry point for my ball to give me more Cary
I can throw a 22 mph straight ball, but when i hook it the speed slows dramatically around 15 mph but i have more success with the angle and carry.
Have fun with all of those splits. 🙂
Poffle _vlogs you’re telling me you have more revs than most professionals??
This really helped me how to hook the ball. I’ve noticed it when I first tried to hold it the same way in this video
Did anyone else think of the theme song from the movie 'Ferris Bueller's day off', after the slow motion voices started?
there's nothing better then a frantic :)

Jeremy john they bowl with 1st. It's generally easier when trying to get maximum spin.

TheWwwyzzerd you can get a Canon T2i used for probably $2-300 bucks, you don't need the best quality lens, good lighting enhance the video quality
need a high framerate camera
if I can afford one
slo mo guys need to do this...
Im wondering how they haven't thought about it so far...
where's Andrews pinky?!
Thanks, but I'll stick with my no-thumb style...better hook in my opinion.
nice spinning ball buddy
That is why my coach always complain about my hand that is why I do not hit that much pins!

Go go go people
nice video
Wrong. You wanna hold it from the bottom and then spin up with your hand over the right side. You use less effort to get the same spin.
Nice when they block the view with their legs pfff
why do not kick it easy than by hand
You would hurt your foot. Bowling balls are heavy.
