For those wondering about possible context, I’m almost certain this scene is a depiction of one of the times that the devil appeared to Padre Pio. When the devil entered his confessional, he was described as a handsome man with dark eyes, who dressed with refinement and spoke politely. The screaming makes much more sense with this context lol. I’m still not thrilled about the cursing, but in a context in which he is literally admonishing the devil, it’s at least more understandable. Apparently the devil and demons continually tormented St. Pio throughout his life, which could explain how exasperated and aggravated Shia’s depiction of Pio is in this scene.

I just watched the first shot of this scene and it’s now obvious to me that this is indeed the devil, who had been tormenting and victimizing poor St. Pio in various, vivid ways throughout his life. Again, while I’m still not crazy about it, the cursing is much more understandable when considering the context.

That's true. That's how Padre Pio tests if an entity is a devil in disguise. He makes them say "Praise Jesus" or "Christ is Lord". If that entity can't say it, that's a giveaway that it is the devil.

I know a lady that met Padre Pio at Pio's mass in Italy. This lady had a sore on her leg that for years would not heal. She was originally from Italy and married an American GI ( the GI was American-Italian). Before Mass, Padre Pio walked into the church and asked, "where is the American housewife? Your leg is healed." She stood up, she was the only American in the church. Her leg was instantly healed. Padre Pio's father traveled to America to work and save money to pay the cost to put Pio in the seminary. Padre Pio always had a special place in his heart for Americans.

My dad and my uncle went to a mass of Padre Pio’s back in 1961. (They were born in Italy but had immigrated to America in the early 1950’s.) My uncle had been in a terrible car crash that had left him a paraplegic at the young age of 18. This was around 1956. The doctors at the time didn’t have much hope for survival for him. In fact they told him that he probably would be lucky to live to the age of 30. So on a trip back to Italy to visit other family, they decided to attend a mass of Padre Pio’s in hopes of a miracle for my uncle, mainly that he would walk again. That unfortunately, never happened. However, my uncle ended up getting 2 college degree, one in business and one in teaching. He became a teacher, then a business man, starting his own construction company. He traveled, he did philanthropic work, charitable work, etc…He lived a full life despite his paralysis, to the ripe old age of 82!!! (Outliving every paralyzed patient that was in the same clinic as he was back in 1957!) My dad believes in his heart THAT was the miracle of Padre Pio’s. So do I!

Satan went beyond all the limits of deception when he went to Father Pio pretending to be a penitent.
This is the Father Pio’s testimony: “One day, while I was hearing confessions, a man came to the confessional where I was. He was tall, handsome, dressed with some refinement and he was kind and polite. He started to confess his sins, which were of every kind: against God, against man and against the morals. All the sins were obnoxious! I was disoriented, in fact for all the sins that he told me, but I responded to him with God’s Word, the example of the Church, and the morals of the Saints. But the enigmatic penitent answered me word for word, justifying his sins, always with extreme ability and politeness. He excused all the sinful actions, making them sound quite normal and natural, even comprehensible on the human level.. He continued this way with the sins that were gruesome against God, Our Lady, the Saints, always using disrespectful round-about argumentation. He kept this up even with with the foulest of sins that could be conjured in the mind of a most sinful man. The answers that he gave me with such skilled subtlety and malice surprised me. I wondered: who is he? What world does he come from? And I tried to look at him in order to read something on his face. At the same time I concentrated on every word he spoke, trying to discover any clue to his identity.. But suddenly; through a vivid, radiant and internal light I clearly recognized who he was. With a sound and imperial tone I told him: “Say long live Jesus, long live Mary!” As soon as I pronounced these sweet and powerful names, Satan instantly disappeared in a trickle of fire, leaving behind him an unbearable stench.” (Don Pierino is a priest and one of the father Pio’s spiritual sons who were present at the same time.)

In my youth Padre Pio was always portrayed as an absolutely good natured person, I didn't dig much into his persona and wouldn't expect anyone, let alone Abel Ferrara, making a movie about him.
He was almost a pop icon, with yearly almanacs and calendars published with his name and his warm, benevolent face framed in his gentle white beard.

The controversy of the depiction of Pio using the F-bomb isn't because he said it in anger, nor is anger itself what's scandalous. The word, even though we've all heard it and are probably pretty used to it, is by design vulgar. Profanity isn't intrinsically sinful. Context always counts, but some words are objectively worse than others, and the F-word due to its perverse connotation, is among the worst. Padre Pio also spoke out against the use of vulgarities and expressed how it can be used in favor of the preternatural. In short, the concern isn't that Pio kicked the woman out (he really did do this and we trust it was justified), nor was it because he was angry and raised his voice, but he understood the demonic and what they could use against souls, even with language. This wasn't an honest depiction of a great saint.
I'm still looking forward to this movie, and especially glad about Shia's conversion (pray he perseveres), but take the movie itself with a grain of salt.

Our dear Padre Pio is an amazing saint. Having studied Padre Pio's life for a few years, I am afraid that this movie may not represent who Padre Pio actually was. There is a scene where he swears using foul language, but Padre Pio would never have used such foul language, he could be loud and strict but not using swear words. I am very concerned that this movie may misrepresent who he was and will not show his immense love for his brothers and care for souls as can be seen when reading his letters. it shows an aspect of him being strict, but what about all the other aspects of his personality that he was kind and even often joked and could read hearts in confession. He was so close to Jesus and his desire was to live completely for Jesus and to do Gods will that Jesus gave him the stigmata as a sign that Padre Pio shared in his suffering for humanity. I can only recommend to those who watch this movie to not be shocked or disappointed but to read his letters to see the kind person he was by reading his own words. I think the other movie called 'Padre Pio Miracle Man' ua-cam.com/video/nKM909nHz4A/v-deo.html (English version) represents more accurately who Padre Pio was and the suffering he went through, although it is also dramatized to some extend. I recommend to watch it, its very beautiful and can make you cry. May Padre Pio who is an amazing saint who has changed my own life very significantly bless all of you. Amen.

I think most folks are confusing vulgarity with profanity. Padre Pio was not a vulgar individual, but vulgarity in Italian culture is always in context as opposed to employing simple words. Culturally, the employment of profanity in Italy today vs then is wildly different; profane words in Italian culture are used to provide emphasis, although here the vernacular is adapted to what is commonly used today in the the United States much to the same effect. That being said, Padre Pio was also drafted into the first World War which was by all stretches Hell on Earth at the time, and in order to interact with the soldiers of that time, I imagine that his vocabulary and communication dynamics were appropriately colorful, intentional, and to the point.
It's also worth noting that the film is about Padre Pio as opposed to the outward perception of Padre Pio. Shia notes in his research of the man that positions of leadership are simultaneously internally visceral while being outwardly performative... which makes complete sense. I'm sure most of us have been there where at work our internal thoughts are wildly different from our perceivable conduct. We're human, and ultimately so was he.

Unlike many here, I will not presume to know whether Padre Pio said such things or not. I did not personally know the man. But I have known other priests and religious who I knew to be good and devout people who in moments of weakness did use such words. For those who believe that this is out of the realm of possibility or isn’t conceivable for a canonized saint, well…they refuse to admit the weakness of our fallen nature and idealize saints as being sinless in which case they would not be in need of a savior.

I question this in the same way. I just think it is unfair to portray him using such foul language without any evidence of it. For example, if there were a famous story that specifically highlights him swearing in what looks to be like a Church, then it would be fair and crucial to depict that as part of his story. Without this evidence it is just Hollywood sensationalism, and it would be wrong to put that on not just a man, but a Saint, one of the greatest of them.

When I said "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven" he stopped me right there and told me "I can't say that". There is hagiography culture in the Church that doesn't allow people to see Saints acting humanly, I mean Saint Padre Pio wasn't walking around in his resurrected and glorified body, a saint is not a saint because is walking on clouds, but rather because God brings them out of their fallen nature and they cooperate with those graces to the level that they can. Plus, in the learning process of becoming a living saint he must have had learning experiences meaning that he must have fell a few times, repent and then keep climbing to God, Saint Padre Pio considered himself a big sinner (like saints usually do) and because of that hagiography mentality we tend to not be able to see how people in the process of becoming one with God can still fall. Let's all remember that Saint Peter cursed when he denied Christ (St. Matthew 26:74)

    • @irodjetson
      @irodjetson 2 роки тому +1

By the way, the notion of "cursing" is now understood as "saying bad words", but cursing traditionally meant to use words so that God would punish that person. I guess the issue here is the the "f-word" is not cursing in a traditional sense but rather simply a vulgar and blasphemous word and Saint Padre Pío apparently never did such thing, he wasn't cheap like that.

If anyone is wondering for context for the scene:
This is not the entire scene. It is split up between the opening and then to the end of the confession. The confession is missing. In it, the woman (man?) states it has been 160 days since their last confession. Then then admits they are frequently angry at their som and wish harm upon him. They then confess that they still hold resentment against their recently dead mother. Finally, they confess that they are becoming attracted to their very young daughters who is going through puberty. As they talk about it, you get the sense that they are becoming aroused just thinking about it, while in the confessional. Padre Pio admonishes them and gives them a very hard penance for the sins against the boy and the mother, but refuses to forgive the sin against the daughter. He tells them if he could, he would bar them from communion for the rest of their life. The person says they do not know how to stop it, and Padre tells them nothing is impossible with God and they need to go to God. Then this scene begins.
I read another comment that says the person is a devil. I did not read this in the movie. If that is the intention, I believe it is a little unclear and you can certainly watch the movie and not make that connection. It does make sense though. Throughout the movie Padre Pio is tempted and harassed by demons and visions. One attacks him and calls him a coward for not going to war while Padre is sobbing in tears. Another attempts to seduce him. It is known demons can not say Christ is Lord so he was probably checking to make sure they were real and not a demon.
Im not sure this movie is very accurate to Padre Pio’s real personality. I dont think he would say something like this. Even barring someone from communion for life I dont know if thats in line with the real Padre. The movie has a strange communist subplot I was not a fan of and just skipped everytime it came up. Unfortunately its half the film and Padre really feels like a side character. None of his supposed miracles, including the stigmata, are touched on. Instead the film focuses on his inner temptation. It reminds me in some ways of the Last Temptation Of Christ (except it is obviously less blasphemous since this is just a man, whereas Christ is God Himself.)
Also be aware the film as cussing throughout and also a scene with a woman’s breasts exposed. I have a feeling the film makers wanted to make a film about a monk being tested and used Padre Pio’s name for clout. It is disappointing. I dont recommend this film

St. Pio could see into souls. This was absolutely one of those instances he could see nothing & deduced it was a devil.

Was it supposed to be the devil? I don't know anything about this man. I thought he was yelling at a lost soul. I wonder why he didn't plead the blood of Christ. I guess I will have to read about him. Interesting clip for sure.

Padre Pio was known to get heated, but he would not have swore like this.

Earlier in the year, I had read that Padre Pio was exactly this forceful, and did yell at a confessor that failed to confess to sin that Padre Pio was spiritually aware of, and did yell at him to leave if would not do so, and of course, not forgive and bless him - how I would love to see Padre Pio deal with "Pope" Francis and his Novus Ordo cadre of miscreants.

I would almost be certain he is interacting with the devil who was known to visit him in the confessional. You almost see Padra Pio the moment he realizes it, that's why he told the person to leave and say "Christ is Lord" (the person can't or won't do it) you hear the person attempt to ask Padra Pio a question but Pio wouldn't allow it to speak and try to attach Pio. I will say I wish it wouldn't portray him as cursing but I believe it's the expression of not putting up with the devils tricks or tactics. I am still very much looking forward to seeing this movie.
