Hey Jared hope you are good man. Any chance you can do a video exploring which 3rd party EF lenses support high speed burst shooting on canon R series bodies?
The f/stop is nice... but the focal length is meh. I went 20 years without a 28-70 zoom and never missed it. Wide angle starts to get good at 20. Telephoto starts to get good at 200. A 70-200 2.8 and 14-24 2.8 cover most of what I need. The 400 2.8 covers most of the rest.
To comment on your three-point five versus using a 2.0 I've been using my 85 mm a little bit more and notice I'm nowhere near 1.4 with my sigma. Shoot with a 14 with people lined up there's just too many spots on the people portraits. I'm not backed up far enough. I don't like seeing a well focused eye and a soft nose and an even softer eye I like the face to be focused so I need my 2.8 and up. I'm really contemplating selling my Sigma 85 mm.
Maybe a dumb question but how can the Sony and Canon equivalent be the same if the latter has both a larger diameter at the lens and the camera. Doesn't that mean it lets in more light and hence allows for either lower shutter speed or ISO? Or am I missing something? Appreciate this comes at the cost of weight, but that's irrelevant for the question posed.
They both get the light to the same size sensor, so in essence the diameter needs to be matching the sensor. If it is unnecessarily bigger, there's no benefit.
Thanks but your reply makes no sense. Both cameras have the same sensor size but Canon has a larger diameter at the camera and also at the lens in question. This must mean that the Canon captures more light....
@JK-of4dr No, it doesn't capture more light. The aperture blades inside the lens regulate how much light goes through. The mount at the rear can be as big as you want, but it won't improve it. A good way to visualise this is using water as an analogy. You have a certain size of glass that can hold a specific amount of water (that'sthe aperture F number). If you pour that into a bucket, you'll still have the same amount of water. The thing is, you don't need a bucket at the other end.
@JK-of4dr I can't think of any benefit. If you have a larger mount, then you can place the sensor further back inside the camera body. That was important with DSLRs, as you had the mirror assembly in front of the sensor. But with mirrorless, you don't need that, the sensor can be close to the mount. Nikon's film and DSLR mount was a bit restricted back then; they didn't get it right. They now have a supersized mount for their mirrorless. It doesn't hurt, but will limit how small the cameras can get.
I also have the Canon RF 28-70mm f2L and have no regrets purchasing that lens. Glad to see someone else reach that goal, and hopefully this gets Canon to release a mark II or like you said a 24-70mm f2L. No I will never switch to Sony, the menu is still confusing and the colors feel flat next to the canon ones. But enough rambling about my opinion of Sony.
Canon is big, because they overbuild it to create big circle of light for ibis to have max area to move around giving it absolutely awesome up to 8ev correction. Dunno how is the sony here for that.
Jared with his typical clickbait titles lol.. he did the same when the Nikon Z9 came out "am I switching!?", then again with Canon and now Sony. I like PetaPixel, no brand bias, just facts and good video insight.
I would like to know, why are they ditching 24mm to 28mm, i mean they would have made a 24-70 f 2 then what is the reason that everyone is ditching 24mm. please someone explain
If the lens had started at 24mm, it would've been significantly bigger. And also more difficult to design, and more expensive. Less people would be adding it to their bag.
I only have Sony so. . . Expensive and big but that's expected for a F2 zoom. Definitely would be overkill for this weekend Dad shooter with my A6400. Adding in the APS-C 1.5x would make this a no go as a starting range for a zoom.
@ 05:33 the shadows around the eyes😢. F2.8 might have cleared it a bit or using a fill flash .. What do you think ? This is often a challenge for me as well in daylight scenarios. Anyways good review ❤❤
I would switch from Canon to Nikon and get the Sony E -> Nikon Z adapter for this lens. If I wasn't poor that is. I think I am still making payments on my R5/RF 28-70 f/2.
What's really remarkable is that this lens is very close in size and weight to the original 24-70 GM. The progression in tech is phenomenal. Also says a lot about Sony's early F-mount lenses LOL.
That is exactly what I did a few months ago in anticipation of this lens. I figured if I waited for it to drop the prices on the 24-70's may fall, so I got out ahead of it and sold months ago, now I can't wait to get this one and try it out.
That’s a tough call. I actually shoot two systems when I do events. Canon R6II with the 28-70 f2 and a Sony a7Rv with the 70-200 GMII. If I switched I would have to pick up another Sony body, or go back to one body and switching lenses. Either that or look at my lens collection and see what I could sell. Tamron 28-75 G2 would be on the chopping block. And maybe the 35 1.2 sigma.
Easy, sell all Canon RF stuff. Simply buy A1 II and SEL2870GM. Keep Sony A7RV and SEL70200GM2. Viltrox seems to be making a small E-Mount AF 35 f1.2, sadly it made a huge 135 f1.8 (miss opportunity).
@@JojoJoget I’m talking about him but one of the reason why he would use the 28-70mm f2 is for the extra F stop, it’s like having multiple prime quality lens in one body
RF has a much larger diameter vs E mount - 54mm vs 46mm. So lenses tend to be larger for Canon to fit this size. The claim is that the larger image circle has benefits - but at todays technology most of us probably can’t tell
Hi! Do you make both photo and video ? I'm thinking of changing. Just want a 50mm f1.2 and I think maybe Canon's has a different spirit and magic. Sony covers all my pro needs but is in the weight of canon better quality glass ? I'm interesting on your point of view.
@@ivancondeph regarding Canon's 50/1.2L beware that there are some audible cracks during focusing, so an external sound recorder/directed mic would be needed. This also adds extra 200grams to the setup. Having that said, in my opinion the switch is totally worth it. I shoot both photo and video, and now the process looks significantly less time consuming - since the image not only looks better - it requires lot less time in post. You'll be surprised - even JPGs are usable now lol. With the Sony only RAWs were usable, but since they required a ton of processing - the results were less consistent. Now I can even export JPGs to my iPhone directly(yes Canon made a usable app!) and edit in auto mode, so my wife doesn't bother me for weeks to edit some photos :D And in RAWs colors do not fell apart after heavy corrections. Somehow Canon renders A LOT better in the mixed light situations. So I keep blaming myself for ever spending money(A LOT) on Sony gear.

The Canon 28-70 has been a fantastic lens since it came out. I am a little jealous of Sony having the same but smaller and lighter as the Canon really is a chonk. I don't think there's any reason to switch systems to have one or the other, just get the one for whichever you currently have if you need it/can afford it.
Hi Jared, fully understand your decision to stay with Canon. But I’m really enjoying to stay with Sony. Very often I take my pictures in the nature, taking sports portraits in the European alps. For those activities size and weight really maters. Therefore I really appreciate Sony’s latest introductions. But Canon of course is nice as well 🤩.
I think they call that lens envy. I have been shooting with Sony forever and I have 6 Sony lens. Only one of those lens is a gm lens it’s a 24mm 1.4 lens. The rest g lens. I am not a pro so honestly can’t afford any of the gm Sony stuff.
All systems are great. All shoot raw. The biggest things to look at besides your ability to facilitate a good exposure is how is this cameras AF, how well can you customize its buttons to allow you to make changes quickly and very importantly how light and inexpensive is your gear? I run around 120k images per camera a year for work. I still shoot on a7iii and a7iv w good glass of which is sigma and i know my gear. Rarely do i run into issues other than my a7iii which just crossed a 600k shutter threshold. People we live in the easiest era of gear. Youre not hurting yourself unless you have a canon 20d or any flagship aps-c cameras from 20 years ago
@ I know. I’m just saying if anyone thinks canon will make anything smaller than Sony they’re kidding themself. That’s what Sony prides itself on. Even the new 24/35/50 L lenses are bigger than Sonys equivalent. Doesn’t make them better just saying they won’t be smaller.
1.4L and 1.4GM hybrids are new 1.8 pro standard and F2 zooms are new F2.8 pro ZooM standard yet with the choice of 2.8 zooms for those cant handle weight n cant giveup that 4mm wide which is a significant 8°❤ I wouldnt be surprised if they launch a 70-150 F2 ZooM

Why would anyone switch camps every time one of the big three releases a good lense or body? That'd be insane 😅 The differences are so minor these days anyways. I sold all my EF glass and switched to RF when the R6mII came out because it offered a hell of a lot of improvements over my old gear. However, I stayed with Canon because I'm used to the menus and button layout, I really wanted the 100-500, and most important of all to me, I always love how the pictures look out of camera with a Canon body. If THAT changed at some point, it'd be time for me to look elsewhere for new gear, but not a day sooner.
@Gabson9 watch the video and you'll then understand. He did that on purpose to show the separation and render of the f2 at 70mm after hitting the original shot.
I still prefer primes: f1.8 n f1.4 I use EF hlasses on my R6m2 using meike drop-in-filter adapter This is way cost effective than my fear of using an adapter
Canon may or may not go to a 24-70 f/2, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they came out with a lighter and smaller 28-70 f/2. The latter is easier to do than the former.
One should absolutely switch from Canon to Sony if you’re using this lens because this lens’s job is to reduce weight of carrying multiple primes. With 550 gms less, this allows for more efficiency and productivity! 😊
@@gustavoumenobut we are in the here and now. And right now the Sony lens has a huge advantage in weight. For a lens a lot of events and wedding photographers use for day long shoots, that 1 pound difference is massive and all that matters right now.
IMO Sony could have had a home run with a 24-70 f2. Doing a 28-70 f2 instead is a relatively weaker positioning play because it’s clear that Sony’s implied message to the consumer base for some time has been that whatever Canon can do, we can do better. IMO unless Canon has a second gen 28-70 f2 ready for release within a year, the move is to let Sony have this one and focus instead taking the flagship game to Sony. The A1 II is very much an incremental update (likely leaving room for a global shutter gen 3), the R1 very much a R3II. A variant of the R1 that would supersede the A1 II and hold its own compared to a Z9 II would be a good move to stabilise the brand by putting a stake in the ground. Then next look into a LF camera for the C series because IMO a Sony MF/LF line is an eventual thing. Fuji IMO has gone for some first mover lead by teasing the GFX Eterna despite the slow sensor readout. IMO it doesn’t seem likely that can be dramatically improved, otherwise they would have advertised so because that’s the first question and doubt everyone has. Then let the LF C series trickle down to a MF mirrorless model. Combine the LF/MF line with the stereo lens R&D to really cement a strong hold on the market for producing stills/video for VR headsets

A good way to visualise this is using water as an analogy. You have a certain size of glass that can hold a specific amount of water (that'sthe aperture F number). If you pour that into a bucket, you'll still have the same amount of water. The thing is, you don't need a bucket at the other end.
@@adamadamis understood
That's now a different question but what is then the benefit for Canon's larger diameter?
@JK-of4dr I can't think of any benefit.
November Ren Fest or was this shot months ago?
Jared with his typical clickbait titles lol.. he did the same when the Nikon Z9 came out "am I switching!?", then again with Canon and now Sony. I like PetaPixel, no brand bias, just facts and good video insight.
Big fan of peta pixel but their reviews are quite shallow imo. They often don't do enough testing in different situation.
Peta pixels they sucks at photography 😂. Waste of time.
9:41 50 1.2 - did you just leak a new lens?
Sony’s 50 1.2 GM?
24-70 f2.8 vs this lens difference?
I would like to know, why are they ditching 24mm to 28mm, i mean they would have made a 24-70 f 2 then what is the reason that everyone is ditching 24mm. please someone explain
If the lens had started at 24mm, it would've been significantly bigger. And also more difficult to design, and more expensive. Less people would be adding it to their bag.
The photo from Pizzeria of Joe is just so so good Jared. I'm jealous!
I only have Sony so. . .
Expensive and big but that's expected for a F2 zoom.
Definitely would be overkill for this weekend Dad shooter with my A6400. Adding in the APS-C 1.5x would make this a no go as a starting range for a zoom.
its not heavy. Look on canon rf 28-70 2.0 !!! - that is heavy !
@Dmitrii_88 Sure that one is bigger. Still does not make this a light lens
I’d be very interested if Canon brings it down to 24mm at F2 🙌🏼

@BryanLopezProductions but can fix this in post ..if taken in raw..
Looks like fun. I'm sticking with compact lenses these days. Great review!
now for the waiting time for 20-50 f2
now THAT would be extremely useful. I’d rather rock that and a 70-200/2.8 in my bag.
That's a great idea. Right now rocking Sony 20-70 f4.
don't hold your breath, perhaps Sony will make 25-50/2
The zoom ring set to tight would accommodate video shooters..
Damn it! Thought for sure I was about to pull up the pickup and get some Canon Lenses....
I would switch from Canon to Nikon and get the Sony E -> Nikon Z adapter for this lens. If I wasn't poor that is. I think I am still making payments on my R5/RF 28-70 f/2.
Good one to use with Nikon via megadap
What's really remarkable is that this lens is very close in size and weight to the original 24-70 GM. The progression in tech is phenomenal.

Canon RF 70-200mm f2.0 please
That’s a tough call. I actually shoot two systems when I do events. Canon R6II with the 28-70 f2 and a Sony a7Rv with the 70-200 GMII. If I switched I would have to pick up another Sony body, or go back to one body and switching lenses. Either that or look at my lens collection and see what I could sell. Tamron 28-75 G2 would be on the chopping block. And maybe the 35 1.2 sigma.
why do you shoot two systems?!?!
@@barrytakespictures8947 Because of the lens, Sony didn't have a 28-70mm F2 for 6 years till now
Easy, sell all Canon RF stuff. Simply buy A1 II and SEL2870GM. Keep Sony A7RV and SEL70200GM2. Viltrox seems to be making a small E-Mount AF 35 f1.2, sadly it made a huge 135 f1.8 (miss opportunity).
@@Jekozawhy do you need a 28-70 f2?
@@JojoJoget I’m talking about him but one of the reason why he would use the 28-70mm f2 is for the extra F stop, it’s like having multiple prime quality lens in one body
Canon's one is much thicker. Is the Sony actually F2?
RF has a much larger diameter vs E mount - 54mm vs 46mm. So lenses tend to be larger for Canon to fit this size. The claim is that the larger image circle has benefits - but at todays technology most of us probably can’t tell
Just recently switched from Sony A1 -> Canon R5II. What a relief, what a huge level up. Sony - never again

Ugh! Why does it have to be 3 grand?!!!
I think they call that lens envy. I have been shooting with Sony forever and I have 6 Sony lens. Only one of those lens is a gm lens it’s a 24mm 1.4 lens. The rest g lens. I am not a pro so honestly can’t afford any of the gm Sony stuff.
Stop being poor
I couldn't think about going with a lens that smells like a Subaru Outback. A WRX ? More like it.
I am already on Sony, but as I have little to no budget for lenses right now I dont like the price and really would like to get one eventually.
Canon is working on a second edition of the 28-70 that is supposed to be smaller

Why would anyone switch camps every time one of the big three releases a good lense or body? That'd be insane 😅
The differences are so minor these days anyways.
I can still click all this pics with sigma 35 & 85 1.4 right 😅
no, you can't because you can't change the lens so quickly!

It`s good, but the guys face is out of focus. I have same ball at home, and the best way is to use manual focus.
@Gabson9 watch the video and you'll then understand. He did that on purpose to show the separation and render of the f2 at 70mm after hitting the original shot.
I still prefer primes: f1.8 n f1.4
I use EF hlasses on my R6m2 using meike drop-in-filter adapter
This is way cost effective than my fear of using an adapter
Canon may or may not go to a 24-70 f/2, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they came out with a lighter and smaller 28-70 f/2. The latter is easier to do than the former.
i have 0 interest in this lens (hobbyist). i just love your wind tunnel/smell tests.

One should absolutely switch from Canon to Sony if you’re using this lens because this lens’s job is to reduce weight of carrying multiple primes. With 550 gms less, this allows for more efficiency and productivity! 😊

Why 28 instead of 24?
Thats right team canon!!! 😅😅😅
Love my R5 to much to switch
