My Dad owns the old gas station & after the pumps were taken out it was still a mechanic shop. The former owner lives behind the shop. It was so nice to see a video about Lena. It’s a great little town to live in & to visit.

Wasn't there a Wildlife Bar in Lena that had hundreds of stuffed animals on display? I vaguely remember stopping in there about 45 years ago. My Dad used to sell apples to the little grocery store there as well, over 55 years ago.

Kinzinger’s owned the tavern back in the 60’s when I lived south of Lena in Stiles. Shopped at Wagner’s grocery store with the squeaky wood floors as a kid too.

My mom's side of our family is from Lena. "Junior" and Marie Kinzinger owned the Hunters and Fishermans tavern. Marie was my grandmothers sister. My first memories of Kinzingers was when I was a little tyke, about 4 or 5, and all of the stuffed animals, fish and other creatures were fascinating. There was an "Elk chair" which was created using the head and antlers of a bull Elk, as well as the elks legs being used for the legs of the chair, it really was a chair, although people were not allowed to sit in it for fear it would somehow break. On the Fridays we went to my grandparents home on Shay Lake we would stop at Kinzingers and while the adults had a few beers, us kids would go to the basement to sort and case the empty beer bottles that were in the bottle shoot and Marie rewarded us with a candy bar. What the general public never saw was the amount of unfinished or forgotten mounts that were in the basement. Thousands of them. Seeing this brought back so many great memories of the times I spent in Lena. Thanks Sally for the trip down memory lane.

I used to swim in the old swimming hole in the river about a mile outside of Lena to the west. After coming out of the water, my friends and I would have to remove the leeches from our bodies. Didn't bother us in the least. Also, we would spend spring days walking for miles on the railroad tracks to pick wild asparagus.

Is that the swimming hole on the Little River on Sunshine Rd?? I used to swim there as a kid visiting my grandparents home about a block from the swimming hole. There was a gravel pit across the road. My mothers side of the family are from Lena and I spent many summers there. I do remember the leeches by the way.

I used to live about 30 miles from Lena. It's not considered the most desirable place to live in the area but the Bavarian Inn Restaurant there was very good and we used to eat there regularly in the 90's and 00's. We also shopped regularly at the Brubaker Mennonite store several miles east of town on County Trunk A.

I’ve been to the little red schoolhouse rummage sale. It’s a pretty cool building. I also have had gas pumped from the gas station. My car has been fixed there also. My first job at 16 YO was at The Bavarian Inn. George Schussler Jr. owned it when I worked there. He bought it from his father and his father was a Packer player back in the day. I also worked at the Frito cheese factory for a bit, and The Village Tavern back when that was the hot spot on weekend nights!. I could go on about this little town called Lena because this is where I grew up, and never moved very far away. I guess I like a small Midwest town. Thanks for checking out Lena Sally.

This video reminds me of visiting my grandparents dairy farm just outside Wausau, Wisconsin. The memories of riding with my grandfather on his tractor and helping him around the barn have never left me. It seems so long ago when times were slower and everyone in the community knew one another. Living in the desert in rural Arizona was a great experience up to a few years ago. Same small town feel until all the people fleeing California decided to relocate here. Watching your Wisconsin videos takes me back to a time in my life I wish I could relive. Keep up the great work.

My Dad grew up in that store that's now Bavarian Inn. They lived upstairs and owned the grocery store below. My great Uncle John Ausloos owned the Gas Station across the Street. The Hwy is named Rosera Ave. as it goes through town. He bought the Organ for St Charles Church. The Barn next to the Gas Station and the big white house in the center of town was my mother's family. My Uncle Ervin ran the farm his whole life. My grandpa donated the land for St Charles Church and Grandma did all the linens for church and priests. That icecream shop was a big hangout. Fun video!!!!!😊🙂😄😀😃😉😊

My family moved up to Lena when my dad became the elementary principal in 1969. I attended all 4 years of high school and graduated from Lena. It was a quiet town and something must have rubbed off because after I finished college downstate, even though my family had moved back to Racine County, I moved up to Ladysmith which is north of Lena in the west central part of the state. I have lived most of my life in small towns in northern WI. Our 50 year high school reunion is next year and I'll be back to Lena to see classmates.

Toward the end of the 1960's my mother and Father moved to Lena from Rochester Wisconsin taking the four younger children of eight with them. Dad had just landed a new job as the principal of the Local school there. I had just graduated high school and had a good job in Burlington at the local glass factory and I was the youngest of the four older children. My girlfriend (now my wife of 52 years) and I would visit Lena many times and it seemed like a very nice little town. Dad and I would fish the local lakes like Porcupine, and it couldn't have been more beautiful! Thanks for the nice visit to Lena, Wisconsin.

At that time there were less than 600 people living in town and a cheese factory. The main highway went right through the middle of town. Not anymore. We have visited Kugel’s cheese shop a couple times but really haven’t made any contacts since about 1975.

My home town of Plainfield would fit into your documentaries. Only thing when a bar caught fire (Stash's) it took out half of main street. Actually it's state hwy 73. Main street burnt down long before that. Plainfield folded when highway 51 (39) moved from the east end of town to the west side. Now everyone just passes by it. Dad met mom at grandpa's soda jerk. Original root beer stand. He rolled up on his 47 Harley and the rest is history. I lived there for 19 years joined the military and now live in Alaska after retiring. Whenever I need to get grounded I take a trip home in July do the multi class reunion and drive my motorcycle through town. The memories just flood back in. Hey Sally, the milk can as your thumbnail for this vid caught my attention! My mother used to hold umbrellas in a milk can placed on the side of the front door. One day the doorbell rang and I went running down the hallway, tripped over a hump in the rug went flying and landed face first against the decorative milk can! I was 7 and we'd just moved into the house so I guess it was tricky for her to pick me up and find the hospital... long story short, I almost lost my right eye vs. a milk can! Miss Sally, you missed the Barn Tavern!

I just learned about it today from someone on Facebook. They said this is the place to grab a drink where the cows used to stink.

The Barn Tavern had great history. Unfortunately, it has permanently closed now.

The upper level of the Barn Tavern was the old hayloft, and people would hold dances and parties up there. I actually attended my high school class reunion there. The lower level, where the cows were, was turned into a restaurant . . . best perch fry around on Friday evenings. The sign out front said, "Come sit, relax, and drink where the cows used to stink."

Thank you Sightseeing Sally & Marty. Another great video. I lived in Prince George's County, Md. until 1988. I can't exactly recall the year, but it was sometime in the very early 1970's, maybe 1971, when gas was still pumped by an attendant. And as you said, New Jersey, still has attendants pumping gas. Thank you again Marty & Sally.

Here in Vermont, my kids went through any one of four one room schoolhouses. Then, finally 15 years ago they opened a nice new K-8 school. It was great while it lasted. My daughter and her class made the centerfold in Yankee Magazine, as the last class to attend theirs... Thanks Sally for the reminiscing episode. Love your and Marty's videos!

Sally - one thing drove me crazy during this video was the image flipping back and forth from left to right and vise versa. Isn't there some way to flip the image during editing so I don't have to master mirror reading???

    • @SightseeingSally
      @SightseeingSally  3 місяці тому

Hey, thanks for asking about this! The mirroring should no longer be an issue on my current episodes. I fixed the settings on my camera a while ago. However, it is quite likely that you will run into this issue again. There were several videos that were filmed like this before I figured out I needed to change a setting.

@@SightseeingSally OK, I am probably noticing this since I have been going back and watching some of your early videos.

I love these visits to these towns. It reminds me of my childhood when we'd visit grandma on the farm outside Birnamwood, Wi..

I live in Lena. I have lived in several places throughout the years and I know that Lena has some really neat history. If you haven't already, you have to get to the museum. It is the best. You will love it. I know that a letter from Abraham Lincoln is hanging on the wall. The oldest house in town is in eye sight right now. I ❤️ the pictures that are framed in the local police station.
