I grew up in Mountain. I have many family members buried in the cemetery and still have family there. My home was located in the trailer court by Chute Pond. I loved living there. My aunt and uncle owned the log cabin restaraunt on the left of the highway going towards Lakewood. Many in my family worked in the woods. I remember the little grocery store, Hase's bar, going to school at Moutain Elementary, Dr. Strebe's clinic, the fire tower. The school was closed due to asbestos, I think. I remember my teachers. Mrs. Reed in kindergarten, Mrs. Johnston in first and second grade and Miss Dobratz for third and fourth grade. I even remember when the gymnasium at the back of the building was added onto the school as well as the buildings in the back next to it. That bar was known as the Milyway bar and the thirsty buck was the bar and restaurant I spoke about earlier. Thanks for bringing me home.
I remember the thirsty buck saloon. My aunt named Vi Wold drank herself to death there In 1966. She is buried in the Mountain cemetery. I have many fond memories from Mountain but didn’t spend much time there because most aunts and uncles only went there to drink Cases of Adler Brau beer.
I lived in Mountain from the very early 40''s through the mid 50's. Beautiful childhood and yes, we went to Mountain School. Many fond memories of my growing up there. No one had running water, we all had out houses. There was a town pump for water and a train that came through twice a week. 💞💕
I'm so glad you told us about Cathedral Woods, Sally. As a rare slice of virgin northern Wisconsin woods, it is indeed a precious place. Thanks to Lucy Holt and her husband and their family after them!
My mother grew up there. She graduated from Mountain high school in 1944. My grandparents had a farm there, about 5 miles from town off of Highway W. Both of my parents and grand parents are buried in the cemetery there.
Interesting video. I see Thomas Rasmussen's General store in several shots. He was my great granduncle. He had a brother Martin who also lived in Mountain, Arthur lived in Iowa and my great grandfather Albert lived in Oconto. I used to have a lot of relatives in Mountain and we had some good family reunions there.
Thank you Sightseeing Sally. Another great video. I enjoyed your tour of Mountain, Wisconsin. At 74, I have been in a few "watering holes ", myself. I grew up in Prince George's County Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., and we had a "fire tower ", in our area, and since I belonged to our local Volunteer Fire Deptt., I was, from time to time, in the Fire Tower. So, your video, on Mountain, brought back some memories so, thank you again. Good health to you, Marty, Mocka, and the rest of your pets, as I have seen you, with more than one dog, in the car, in your videos.
Very cool, so glad my video on Wisconsin’s only mountain 🏔️ brought back some good memories for you Earl! Thanks so much ❤️ Marty, Mocha, and I appreciate it and wish you the same. (Our other dogs have crossed the rainbow bridge and are at the big dog house in the sky.)
The Schoolhouse Bar has an awesome corn roast every Summer. The bar next door to it, the name escapes me already, was The Hilltop Cafe just a few years ago. The interesting thing about the names Armstrong and Mountain, the official name of the town according to the county was still Armstrong until 1997, even though the postal designation has been Mountain for years. Cathedral Pines was always a favorite spot of mine growing up, I would ridge my bike there several times a year from over at Maple Heights Campground, I figure maybe 3 miles each way on the paved roads. Also, I'm glad you featured the Mountain Fire Tower, another favorite spot of mine up that way.
OMG! Thanks for the memories. I attended school in Mountain from K-8. I have a million stories to tell. I wish I would have seen this when you originally posted it.
Love that little bridge you were on😄.Beautiful Mural. Log Mountain Museum log home is beautifully restored. Love the story of the High Schopl and the bell. Thanks for pointing it out and the history. The Schoolhouse bar's history is interesting !! Thirsty Buck Saloon is an awesome name. Love the unique stories of how Mountain got its name. Scoopers Ice-cream shop is another unique name. Shoots pond and the story of the dams was interesting! Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed it!
Back in 1971 had a friend in high school whose family had a cabin in Mountain. Four of us went up there for a weekend trip in the summer. Packed up our friends car to leave and it broke down. Only place open was a tavern, we all walked in and told the bar owner of our troubles and he was kind enough to let us sleep in the bar until morning when we could get the car fixed. One of the best memories wonderful place.
Thank you for reviewing this. A quick note that my great, great grandfather founded Mountain. His name is Thomas McAllen, and is buried in the local cemetery with many of the towns notable elders. McAllen, Bowman, Elbe, etc. Going further down down W, around the bend... Right before you cross the Oconto River is where the original homestead used to be. The buildings are now long gone, and is private property. But the clearing from where the home once stood and it's driveway are still clearly visible. Going even further down W. Turn left on to Wiffen, and follow that deeper in to countryside, follow that to Bowman Lane. At the end of the road on the left is where my grandpa grew up, and built his farm. The old of barn is long gone, but it's foundation remains. Inside the pole barn farthest from the road is where my dad built a home made bull pen from concrete and plumber's pipe when he was a young man. It's still as strong today as the day he built it! Also, great shirt! I have the exact same shirt and wear it to work. 😂
In that picture of the lumberjack, I think that was an axe and not a shovel. I enjoy seeing your videos. I live in Superior, Wi. And enjoy the history you share of some of these small towns in Wisconsin.
Glad I caught your channel not from Mountain but been there many of times and did my share parting there😊anyway I’m a Wisconsin boy and I love Wis history appreciate your videos thank you 😊
Mountain and Wabeno were served by the Chicago and Northwestern RR road crews based out of Green Bay WI and worked to and from Iron River until its abandoned many years ago. Also late cousin of mine whose name was Sally, she passed away in April 1997.
64 goes west to Antigo, 32 goes North. I live about 15 miles north of Lakewood on Marinette on county C towards Wabeno. Lakewood is on 32 north of Mountain.
Back in the 70's when I lived by Mountain we had 4 bars, a grocery store a Arctic Cat snowmobile dealer, 2 restaurants, 4 gas stations, and a tv repair shop all in that small town. I went to school up on top of the hill then high school in Suring. Back then if you were 15 or 16 and had money you could drink in any bar up there.
Good ole Mountain! Been there - doing that! ThanX! Youngster's fishing pond. Chute pond, the fire tower. Ah, Cathedral Pines. Many don't do that tiny loop and see that haunting school up on that hill! you wanna see 'small' check out Black Well. Connor's hardwood mills - long gone. Ancient ruins - on the south side of cty'T' just east of the hy H and T intersection. Lot's of stories, from way back, there. My fam's past and present are Wabeno. We have a great family pic taken from that tower from many many years ago. Many memories of long ago vacations at Chute Pond.
My parents had a cottage in Townsend and we would always pass Mountain on the way up. We used to stop at the Polaris snowmobile shop (if it is still there). and I remember Cathedral Woods. And I believe the next town North was Lakewood where they had an A&W rootbeer diner/drive-in that had the BEST rootbeer floats.😋
Growing up my parents owned Maple Heights Campground just down highway near Lakewood 95’-08’ Its so sad to see everything Logged around the fire tower, even last time I was there it was tall forest all around
Actually know where this is! Used to go up near Crivitz rafting and camping quite a bit as a younger man and have passed through a few times in search of a new adventure and now as a flatbedder out of northern illinois theres not much in the midwest I havent passed through. Maybe I'll stop next time. I enjoy you little facts about all your locations. Keep up the good work!
Sally, that tree laying there in the water is far from being a white pine. It's a red oak tree. And when you were talking about Lucy dying in 1939, I half expected you to say that her husband immediately started logging out her reserve area, lol. I'm glad he didn't. I love your videos. Marty, Beaver Dam area, WI.
@@SightseeingSally --- Well, as my grandmother always used to say....."It's never too late to become and arborist". Ok...actually she never said that. That would be super weird! The timber area is pretty. That is a nice area, to bad the school cannot be fixed up, likely has asbestos so would be to expensive to do anything. Stay safe and healthy.
I lived there just a few years ago. The children here, go to Suring school. I also went to Suring school 2 generations ago. I was a bus driver for them. I lived at the Junction of 64 and 32 for 2 years and moved to Lena to drive as well. You look very familiar to me.

Ken Bowman's Standard, a Gas for less, Mobil, and Loftis DX station. We had 2 restront's one was called the Tailgate with small motel rooms. There were 2 grocery stores Colman's and Bowman's then they both sold and became one shortly after that turning into a Arctic Cat snowmobile shop owned by Joe Baldwin. There were 4 taverns with 2 of them having hotels rooms. Back then if you had "money" that was all of an ID you needed to drink. All you needed to do was sign your name to a notebook saying you were 18, we were all named Tim or Mary Jones then. LOL Times were different back then.
