      It's insane/lazy, as it's probably the best spec wise and highly reviewed. It's also one of only 3-4 that could be considered middle weight anyway (at or near 200kg) 230kg and over 800cc+ is pushing the name...

    Aprilia Tuareg not fancy enough? It won the Africa Eco race this year (ahead of the T7, racing the original Dakar race route, w/ no mechanicals, T7 had two). Seems the Tuareg is just the black sheep, i.e. not Japanese or Austrian enough. So tired of it not being part of the discussion.

    Somebody help me here: Wanting to do a LA to Ny to Fl adventure trip, I could not understand why purchasing a bike with more than 700 cc's would be needed.
    So I took a test ride on a Honda NX 500. Cruising speed before engine vibration was as advertised, 80 mph. But this was until I rode a Kawasaki Versys 650. And though it was 40-lbs heavier, the cruising speed was well into the passing traffic range up over 100 when the faring began to buffet. Now this was the bike for me.
    I simply can't understand who would want more engine, more weight, more speed?

      @BikerGirlTraveler 8 місяців тому +1

      Oh yes! I would pick the T7 over any of those other bikes anytime. May be if I was a wanna be adventure traveler then I would pick a fancy bike with tons of electronics. You know, the crap that all those other bikes have and need to barely beat the T7. Like traction control and electronic suspension. And lets not forget the riders who think that they are better than they really are. Poor fellas don’t realize that it's the bike’s fancy electrics doing a lot of the work for them, and not their “great skills.” Wink wink
      Real experienced motorcyclists know that it is NOT about which bike is the fastest and more agile. Again, those are things wanna be’s care for. Those who are out to have a “little fun” on weekends, not world travelers. But for me, someone who travels the world, the T7 is more than perfect. Hard to beat in performance. But above all, as badass as it is, it lacks all the electronic junk that all those other bike have and need.
      If you are traveling trough a third work country and break down, good luck finding someone who has the know how and specialized tools needed to work of “electronic bikes” (what I call bikes with all the electronic junk). Yeah, good luck with that! And good luck finding parts for that bike. Many third world countries don’t even have an Aprilia, aducati, or other fancy European bike dealers. With the exception of BMW which most countries do have. In most only one dealer in the country, but one is better than none.
      In South America I met a guy who told me about a little problem he had with his BMW. He was traveling through Ecuador (if I remember correctly) and his BMW broke down in the middle of no where. Had it shipped to the capital, where the only BMW dealer is in the entire country, and had to wait almost a month for parts to arrive from Germany and for his bike to be repaired. That was money and time he wasted waiting for his bike.
      By contrast, another friend was traveling through Mexico on a barebones electronics Kawasaki KLR, when his bike also broke down in the middle of no where. Some farmers picked him up on a pick up truck and took him to the local motorcycle mechanic in the village. Some guy in a small shop in a house garage. The guy was able to fix his bike in a couple of hours.
      The beauty about the T7 is not only how good it is, but what it lacks. The only electronics is the ignition system, fuel injection, and ABS. Or what I call the basics.
      Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, the price for parts for electronic and electrical junk on bikes are high enough to empty a bank account quickly. I saw a video of some guy with a KTM690 Adventure bike who had trouble with his display failing. Took it to a KTM dealer and they told him that they needed to change some wire harness. Total bill out of his pocket was 5,100 dollars. Nice! His bike was less than a year old. KTM USA’s warranty doesn’t cover much. Only engine/transmission, swing-arm, and I think frame.
      So yeah, as a world traveler, you can keep your fancy bike and I’ll keep my T7.

    • @shavedape
      @shavedape 8 місяців тому

      @@BikerGirlTraveler But wouldn't a T7 have an electronic display that could conceivably have an expensive wiring harness? It's display must show digital readouts for speed, fuel level and engine speed though perhaps not much else. I'd like to get a T7 World Raid someday to get the cool dual tanks though wish they'd just put those on another cheaper version without the steering damper and amped up suspension. I'd be fine with standard T7 suspension I reckon but don't want to pay $4-5k for the World Raid just to get the tank and its looks. If I bought another adventure bike (my 2012 990 Adventure has never failed) it's be a T7 World Raid or an Africa Twin......probably without the DCT and probably not the huge Adventure Sports one that is pretty ugly. The standard Africa Twin 1100 in black and red with white trim looks the best and is the lightest and simplest option. Sure I'd like to have a Desert X Ducati or Triumph 900 Rally Pro triple or even the 1200 triple but that one's getting pretty heavy even the newer 'light' one. At one time I wanted an 890 R or 890 Rally but heard too many horror stories about camshafts and even crankshafts. My local KTM dealer closed soon after I bought my 990, of course, so closest dealer is 5.5 hours away so thinking Yamaha or Honda.

It's just that this is software, not hardware, so it's easier for them to do it this way. I can see why it's annoying but I can also see why they do it since nothing in this world is free and you have to pay people for doing things (R&D). When people say middle weight I dont think they understand what middle weight means.
    Thanks for sharing but I think the list is quite arbitrary.
    No much consideration on proven reliability, dynamic real life behaviour, dealer support and parts, and weight that all combined will leave several bikes off any lists.
    I guess if your remove the top word from your list it would meke it less objective yet some of those bikes fall in completely different categories.

    • @logangodofcandy
      @logangodofcandy 11 місяців тому

      It means between weights. So, you have a more feature rich dual sport, which is heavier than a dirt bike with all plastic and nothing else. You have the heaviest adv bikes, then you have the middle of those weight ranges.

    • @pepedafrog6951
      @pepedafrog6951 11 місяців тому

      @@logangodofcandy So that point in the middle should be closer to 180kg wet rather than 220. I am also saying because we know anything above that it gets really hard exponentially off road to the point than the largest "adventure bikes" are probably the worse option for the idea of any adventure that includes off road travel. You see, all that power, features is no longer needed and we get penalized and sometimes punished for all that extra weight.
      They will shine at cruising and do well in the very bad asphalt secondary and local roads but also in those roads are hardly the best option.
      That is why the Tenere 700 or aprilia should be at the top that is about the max weight with plenty of power and great geometry. honda 300, dr 650, etc... should be also there for the folks who do not touch highway much to get to the fun places. Those are medium-light more realistic in the adventure world.
      One would think adventure involves some off road but maybe not realistically for many so then why not talk about cruisers and the whole mid range adventure stays as a marketing point exploited by manufacturers to upsale based on an idea or dream.

    If your bike is anything above 400 pounds with luggage it will very quickly become a street touring bike. Less is more if you want to actually go to epic places.

  • @bjjw

    Not sure I would agree with the logic here...Transalp is a very good bike, T7 is a monster and still didn't do well, but Himalayan??? That simply can not be the best Middleweight bike. The reliability, dealer network, power, capability??? No way, no how. Not sure what motivations or reasoning behind the list are but not in my mind, and as it shows, many other people here, which are all bike fans. Maybe do another review, set out the criteria and go from there. But, I don't see anyone choosing Himalayan over any below it, no matter what the money is, unless they live in India and are on the budget...very low budget. And what about Tuareg, really?

    Marketing fantasy... with an eye on your wallet. Ask the guys that actually use the bikes on trials... the list suddenly becomes short...very short. Plenty of UA-cams around to orientate yourself.

    • @BikeMatters
      @BikeMatters  Місяць тому

      When I've ridden trails (off-road days at launches, riding solo, riding at adventure experiences in Wales) I've spent the majority of the time on these adventure bikes, and once on the WR450 - that was a handful, but certainly better equipped for trails. Though bikes specifically for trails would be a different top 10. There are plenty of UA-camrs for everything, luckily.

    Aprilia Taureg over thr Ténéré 700? HELL NO!
    I would pick the T7 over any of those other fancy bikes anytime.
    Oh and one more thing, with the many thousands of dollars I save buying a T7 over those over bikes, I can’t do at least a couple of nice trips through Mexico. Like through Baja California. So yeah, as a world traveler, you can keep your fancy bike and I’ll keep my T7.
