Notes
Recorded at Electric Lady Recording Studios, N.Y. and Manta Sound, Toronto, Canada.
This is definitely an underrated Cobham album; everyone always screams for Spectrum, but this is an unsung classic.
One of my favorites as well.
This is my favored one first! Then Spectrum etc.! 😎🎸🙏🏾
I know Billy don't like Spectrum as much as quite a few others, like Total eclipse, Warning, a Funky side of things, and more, he could not believe how Spectrum got so much success...I listened to Magic under LSD, I can tell it was so cool and magic, very warm feeling, and so deep in the same time...
One of my favorite albums Listened to it a thousand times It got me to Performing Arts high school in the early 80s and back home on trains and ferries
Agreed. Apart from the vocals on the title track, it's a masterpiece.
One of his best listen with headphones the greatest drummer on planet earth he's always master class
My educated guess and HO would be that Billy Cobham never pulled off a bad performance and never recorded a bad album throughout his solo career. Again, IMHO, this guy and Jean- Luc Ponty ARE the living vanguard of fusion.
REAL TALK 1000 % Omar
I totally agree.. Cobham much like Ponty surrounded themselves with the best in their fields.
I not only love Cobham’s music, but the fact he’s the drummer and composer, his sound is way up in the so well engineered mix !! 😁
Great album. I played it over& over again as a starting drummer . Magic indeed. Met Cobham twice round this time and years after. Very warm softspoken man.
Randy Jackson from "American Idol" bass guitar
Peter Maunu....what a player!
No doubt 1 of my favorite i was glad to see him yrs later with Group 87 the band also had mark isham on trumpet patrick o hern on bass and Terry bozzio on drums u might remember Patrick o hern and Terry bozzio from frank zappa 's band bozzio was a founding member of Missing Persons love all these guys
Met Peter. Top notch studio guy. He worked for Keyboard Player Mike Wolff, when Mike was bandleader on the Arsenal Hall Show.
He’s playing was fantastic in the moment
@@alfredbullock8684 I LOVED Group 87's first album! The second one (Dada Processing) ...meh. I found the first one just flipping through album bins in a store in Reno, NV. I used to read artist credits ALL the time and I bought this one because I knew who Bozzio was and had heard of O'Hearn. The tone on Peters playing on Group 87 was incredible! Peter's playing on this album reminds me of Joaquin Lievano (thank you Jean Luc Ponty!).
I was SO fortunate to see this tour!
His clarinet player was insane. Incredible band all! 🌹
I saw it in Houston, an old movie theatre convert called "LIberty Hall" " "Electromagnets" warmed up....(Bill Maddox, Eric Johnson (2), Kyle Brock, ) the Stephen Barber had left
I first got turned on to Billy's solo work in 1992 as a student at Northern Illinois. I guy from Massachusetts had a few recordings on vinyl. I taped them on cassette and listened until I wore out the cassettes. I wound up buying some of Billy's best material myself. I have FUNKY THIDE OF SINGS and TOTAL ECLIPSE on vinyl. I have SPECTRUM, CROSSWINDS, LIFE &TIMES, and INNER CONFLICTS on CD. I cannot understand how I just now discovered MAGIC in 2020. Better late than never as the old adage goes.
I used to play this album a lot as a teenager in my room. Love it! 🥁🔥
One thing that's often overlooked is Cobham's gifts as a composer.
Indeed...great vision ! 🌹
Absolutely!
Best composer !!!
This is one my all time favorites, on campus in 78 a freshman listening to this and other jazz is what got me through. Thanks for the memories 😌
10th grade when this masterpiece dropped, and unfortunately, I no longer have the album. Hey, ITUNES, we need this classic.❤🔥🥁
Absolute beauty in classic Cobham sound - takes me back to the good old days. Love this album!
Still waiting for ITunes to add this gem.
What often gets lost in discussions about BC is what a great musician he is; to compose and arrange like he does is no mean feat. He even raps on this album! Add to that what an amazing drummer he is - the time and energy on this record are ridiculously good, and nobody backs a solo like Billy - and you have one of the unsung greats of the 20th century.
Well said! Another important thing is his ability to blend his style of playing in to other musicians' albums to produce amazing music.
I remember being in high school and a friend of mine told me about this album. I bought it, listened to it, and loved it then, and still do to this day. I started playing drums back then and Mr. Cobham was always an inspiration to me. I just wish this album was on Spotify. A lot of his other stuff is on there, but this one isn't and of course it's my favorite.
I can not find a drummer, in the music history, who could have composed and released such a number of albums, and damn good ones. You should find and discover his work, because is one of the greatest drummers of all time (one of my favourits, for nearly 50 years), and has published his music crossing all sorts of genres and fashions. This album has such good taste in terms of composition, as well of performing skills; Randy displays an incredible technique, and the sound (Oh the sound of that bas), only matched by his inspiration. Peter is REALLY an extraordinary guitar player, with a fantastic speech and sound. They are both acompanied by two great keyboardists and a sweet clarinet, all so very inspired. No doubt that this craftmanship could only supervised by Billy, trully a master of the drums; he puts such good taste in all the compositions (check out the title track, such a groove) and percussion work.We are in the presence of a masterpiece. Thank you Billy.
Aside from non other than Buddy Rich! Billy Cobham was the preeminent Drummer of his time, Had the distinct pleasure seeing Billy Cobham George Duke Band back in 1975, Not for casual ears but was dismayed what I had just witnessed, They are still the most Bad Ass Funk Crew Ever, Can't believe this gem is not avail on Spotify
Sadly, Spotify missed the boat on this one! No where to be found
Their Montreux set from 1976 is on UA-cam.
I am a fan of Billy,I also think there are other drummer composers that are the top,as well as Billy,Bill Bruford is one of them and not the only one....Truth,Cobham has a music legacy,so many considered standards that others don't have...Love Cobham,I play his songs as much as possible, they are really fun and educative. His time with Mahavishnu I think is a masterpiece.
Don't forget Tony Williams, Lenny White, Stix Hooper, Phil Collins.
Myself and some of my friends who were musicians thought this and Return to forever Weather Report was the future of music in the mid 70's great Album saw Billy with the Late Great George Duke and later with Jeff Beck great concerts love this
Me and my friends though the same as you---but as with anything --- sophistication when applied to anything in life is over most folks heads. Long live 70s jazz/fusion!!!
this brilliant (still) futuristic creation of mr cobham which also references the distant past....
is a shining example of how good music incorporates all that is the aesthetically positive in every branch of the arts
along with all that is mathematically evident in branch of the sciences...
this drummers training must have been so damn extensive it just short circuits my layman's tiny lil mind....
after all john mclaughlin formed the 'mahavishnu-orchestra' with him way back... that influential outfit being so for other good bands like guru guru etc.
viva billy cobham...
and thanks for the upload
A Classic......
What a terrific fabulous album! Thanks for posting this! I love Cobham’s drumming so much.
In my opinion , B.C. BEST EVER !!!
Gracias Billy!
Thanks for posting this. I used to practice drums to this album on 8 track way back in the late 70s. Billy is still playing great drums in his 70s. Very inspirational!
I used to practice to this one as well. Many good memories.
I discovered Billy true the Mahavishnu orchestra not so long ago.So glad I did!!
His best LP since Total Eclipse. I LOVE this album - especially the spacy piano and particularly the glissando at the end of the title track. Yeah!
Agreed!
I feel so lucky to have known someone whose musical tastes led me to what would become
"my music"!
What great memories this album evokes. It really is magical.
Thank you for the high quality upload.
Puff n stuff all time favorite 🎵🏴👁👁💀 and on a magic carpet Ride real music

Remember this album back in the day when I first bought it , billy Cobham on those drums just crazy
Billy Cobham always managed to sneak in great melodies on his albums/ speaking of melodic- truly admired Pete Maunu's guitar playing !!!###
Couldn’t wait to go and buy this album. Got home, got behind the drums and next thing you know I’m groovin with the band.stiill one of my faves.
Billy G.O.A.T.
That lead in fill at about 18 seconds in has always been one of my favorites. Great album. Of course, the Spectrum album has to be mentioned. Go on a journey with the album Total Eclipse. Fantastic drumming.
You can't go wrong with Total Eclipse.
Yeah the great John Abercrombie on Electric Guitar with Randy Brecker on Trumpet, and Michael Brecker Tenor Sax. Alex Blake on electric Bass. Glenn Farris on trombone. The total eclipse album
Love this album!
Love the enhancement. If this was recorded in today's real time , Wow!!!
Hah, if I were a drum skin and saw Billy coming I'd be worried! Incredible drummer!
Definitely high energy playing by B.C and band a well known players .in the 70s B.C was putting out album. after album good ones all good depending what u like do like B.C.playing one of the best drummers of the time and all time.
I loved this album. Played it every day on my drums
Who would have thought that Randy Jackson, of American Idol fame, was the bassist for this and a damn good one at that. Crazy thing is I saw Billy at I think the Paladium theater in NYC in 1978 if I remember correctly, and that massive Yellow Set was rolled out on stage. The sun rays shown through the ceiling and angels were singing. Haha, Jk. But it was an awesome experience. And I did not know it was Randy Jackson there on bass. I was so focused on Billy's chops that all other things were drowned out. lol. Great stuff.
he went on to later play with Journey too
totally wonderful, thanks for posting and tracklist and credits, good job.
Oh Hell Yeah.. .Cobs and Crew Gettin The Job Done The Right Way 😀😀😎👊💯💯❤️ And Thanx a Million For Uploading and Sharing 😀😀😎💯❤️❤️
Can't believe that this track is not on spotify??
Timeless, Happy 40th Anniversary
Doctor Garbonzo that's champion news!
My Favorite all Time Drummer in the World, This Man Played Singles better than Most Drummer's on the Planet. My Dream is to Meet Mr. Cobham One Day. He is on My Bucket List.

thank u so much for this,i used to have this lp almosr 40 years ago.I like ac/dc the most
how many times I listened to it in my youth!
Master Kühn on piano..!!!
Alvin Batiste was the musical director at Southern University in Baton Rouge LA. That band line-up is of the hook. Saw this line-up in Baton Rouge in '77 at the old Kingfish club WOW !!!!! this is fantastic, thanks
Timeless late 20th century classic fusion. Still as good as the day it was released.(even better, considering the music drought in the early 21st this is like a spring rain).
💣😍❗ AN AMERICAN GENIUS,
AN AGELESS MASTER! AND HE IS STILL GOIN....🙏🏻👨👩👧👦🇺🇸❗
Amen !!!
aquarianrealm THANK YOU!!!!
excellent
This and Spectrum are my two favorite B.C. albums
Crosswinds was just as great as Spectrum.
@@Basskat100 Spectrum. Crosswinds, Magic, Simplicity of Expression Depth of Thought and Observations &...
The deserted island Cobham must haves....
Crosswinds & Total Eclipse too
@@L00send Yes ! i forgot Total Eclipse ! ; )
Thanks for the upload. A gem. It's not on Spotify. Had it on LP. Seems I've got to buy the CD and rip it to harddisk.
GREAT, FUN!!!
Saw this lp performed in Concert back in the day. Hung out backstage..👍🏻🎶🥁
you lucky s.o.b. ; )
~My second favorite of his solo albums ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw him perform this album and some Cream tunes when he toured with Jack Bruce and others in the late 1970's....Knew the sound man got good seats etc...what a show...
Every drummer on earth copies this, or try, and many go beyond, which is,... "THE MAGIC.
Smokin 1st Track
killin rite off the *bat*
sheila e.'s debut!!! (ac/dc + anteres the star)
this is an often overlooked album, but definitely has everything to make it a classic.
Gratitude
Such melodics n rhythm!
still love it!!
I love!
William Wilson that's champion news!
Puffnstuff :) I had forgotton about that one :)
Very underrated But brilliant Album blend of Jazz Fusion funk rock Pop classical heart and depth sentimental melancholy Great Great Drummer so nice had to see him twice in 76 at the Tower theater in Upper Darby Philly and 77 at the Spectrem he brought greatness with him George Duke Alphonso Johnson Jan Hammer and the Brilliant Jeff Beck took a date in 76 she didn't quite get it a lot of women don't get this sounds like noise to them this is literally my favorite album
AC/DC is my jam!
A-ha! Got all Boomer's albums from 'Spectrum' (1973) to 'Smokin' (1983) and this is one of his best. The last 2 tracks are the two sole instrumentals (ie no vocals) from the subsequent LP 'Simplicity Of Expression, Depth Of Thought' (1978) and are probably the only ones worth hearing from that album.
GREAT RANDY!
wow bonus tracks....
Getting flashbacks now. Had this record when I was 14. High school misfit...
Don't know about misfit you had fucking great appreciation and taste hats off to you

Also the Total Eclipse Project. Featuring John Abercrombie on electric guitar. Alex Blake on electric Bass. The brecker brother horns on trumpet and saxophone. Glenn Farris on trombone. Michelob Levin on acoustic piano And electric keyboards. Great Album.
I checked out your channel off this album, you have some fabulous music uploaded, Ms. aquarianrealm
p.s. I am a subscriber now.
Man I wore out the grooves to this vinyl LP. Peter Maunu on guitar. He played with Jean Luc Ponty's group too.
always liked puff n stuff use to like the piano and that guitar and the clarinet then here comes Mr cobham on Those mean drums
This is such an underrated album. Spectrum was great but come on give some of Cobham’s work some credit.
Super.
magic was all he rage during those years -I even had a magician perform at my birthday party -Billy was just ready to take Tama drums to the world too
Wow, I didn't heared the last two tunes (not fitted for a 90 min. casette one side.. :D), I think Guernica is like a Return to Forever flashback.... sometimes Gadd, Chick.... :DDD
One of my favourite album to start to learn jazz-rock, Randy was elemental on this... as everyone as well...
Killer album IMO.
The 13 dislikes...they must be The Archies fans.
just trolls, looking to get a rise out of people. pay them no heed.
@@brendanm.buckley7082 my comment was just poking fun at them.
@@Patrickrivasticksdrums I hear you, Patrick! I can't for the life of me imagine that anybody would not recognize the greatness of Cobham, and this entire album in particular. Good day to you!
25:55 - my favourite
cool 10.43 don't know how i do it sometimes but closed my comment perfectly with that song............
If you could only take 10 albums to your eternal life, which ones would that be ? This is one of them (others are by H Hancock, M. Davis, Hiromi, Avishai Cohen, Steely Dan ...) . I have the LP - not playable any more - and a '2 albums on one disc' CD which is inferior to this copy.
Took some girls from University in 1980 to see this on a trip to New York. I graduated.
forse il piu' bello dei suoi albums
Shela e and Billy Cobham check out the album 👍 credit lol 😆💯 😮😏 👍💯
Randy Jackson on Electric Bass.
Am I mistaken or does this contain more tracks than the original album?
No you're not mistaken. Indigo and (La) Guernica are bonus tracks not on the original release. They were re recorded and released on the album Simplicity Of Expression Depth of Thought the following year of 1978.
I believe Mr escoveto and his daughter Sheila on vocals also on one cut
You are talking about Pete and Sheila Escovedo.
www.sheilae.com/about/
I had this vinyl :-)
It's not the idea of being better than, but the achievement to say,"I can do this", in one form or another. LOL
