Awesome tutorial. It really helped me understand what a boolean was and is capable of. Took me a minute to find a few of the tools because MAYA 2016 is a bit different and a few of the tools are under different tabs.
this is a great and crisp tutorial - thanks! although I am learning Quad Mesh modeling within SketchUp, your operations are easy to understand and good transferable...
4:39 - Instead of interactive split try doing a bevel and then triangulate for smoothing object. But I cannot think of a time where I would need to do a boolean and then smooth the object. Why not just edit the polygons into the desired shape if the object is still a low-poly cage? For example the shape created here can be made by creating a 3x3 plane, deleting selected boxes and extruding upwards. If the boolean is complex, it will take longer to manually tessellate the shapes with the split tool than to just start from scratch (via simple extrusions or nurbs bi-rail) and position the edge flow where you want it. Still, I see this is a demo, but in real world applications you will be subtracting a high definition shape from another high definition shape. At the early stages there is no reason to boolean, because you could simply model it the way you want without a lot of trouble.
Yes, this is just a demo, therefore I've tried to keep it as simple as possible. The boolean tool is great for when you have to join two objects and you want to keep the spherical or cylindrical shape in each object that smooths nicely after they've been combined. If you know of another way to do this I'd love to learn it!
Nice comprehensive look at booleans. A little biased. You allowed prep work on the second set of the cannons to avoid complications but you didn't on the first. Your point can still have been made but all things fair, you didn't do any prep on the first cannon.
+Lyndon Hamer I'm pronouncing the word the way I've heard it spoken from multiple teachers. The A is pronounced like lawn or dawn so it sounds the same as boo-lee-on.
@@mr.h You're absolutely wrong about this. The fact that your teachers are pronouncing it this way of course has no relevance on how the word is pronounced. And listening to you mispronounce the word over and over for 15 minutes is distracting. And if we're making appeals to popularity, which is a logical fallacy, you are literally the only person in 5 years of studying 3d that I've ever heard pronounce the word "boo-lee-yon." Literally the only one. And I've watched hundreds of Zbrush, Maya, 3ds max videos. Hell, even Autodesk instructors on their videos pronounce it the right way.
Timber Talis The boolean tool can be unreliable sometimes. Try it again and make sure you select everything in the right order. If it still doesn't work try creating new geometry.
Hi, i have an issue when i am making hole in a plane more then 20 times it doesn't work. why this is happen, is there any other way to make multiple hole in a plain, i am using maya 2014. please reply soon.
when i try to use boolean both objects disappear :< not ät first, then all went like it supose but after i tried union then it hapend. and after that everytime both objects disappeared, why?
kaja hansen Hello there. Sorry you are having trouble with the tutorial. I have a newer version for 2015 that I can upload tomorrow. Please check back then. They have changed some things with the boolean tool for 2015.
Boolean is a fast way to make certain things happen, but make no mistake, it's a double edged sword. It can become more trouble than it's worth.

+Michael Follett Yeah, they keep changing the location of tools. Its great for users but a little frustrating for teachers.
You just took my skill to another level. I hated Boolean because I couldn't get to work but now, but now!
trugb24 The poor boolean tool always gets a bad wrap. You just have to use it the right way!
this is a great and crisp tutorial - thanks!

+E Gie Cool. Glad you were able to transfer the the technique!

i have a question ...
how to make that pipe shape inner side the planer ???
Great Tutorial. Thank you, this was a great help.
Cheers, Well explained tut, much appreciated! ;)
there's a plugin for auto booleans that add or preserve border edge loops now, it is called hard mesh.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out!
Very nice and helpfull thanks man!
DanTheMan Bardo You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing this video dude. I wish some of my instructors did a better job demonstrating this. Cheers!

Good Tutorial. Thanks !!!
Boo-leon?
+Lyndon Hamer Yes, that's how you pronounce the word :)
+Mr. H en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Boolean#Pronunciation
Boo-lee-an instead of boo-lee-on

I heard of plugin called HardSurface, that will make boolean much better in Maya. Don't know when it's coming.
+izvarzone Thats sounds awesome! I'll keep an eye out for that!
Thank you for your reply. Its worked.
debi mahato You're welcome!
thanks u alot it''s very helpful
Thanks for watching!
Nice explanation.
Thanks!
i cant access the project folder
At 7:40 when you used the boolean tool- when I did it, the other half didn't disappear. I'm not quite getting this. :(

Hai How to Control Hard surfaces
Great!

debi mahato Try combining all the pieces that are punching the hole into one object, then apply the boolean.
Haha Boo-leon!! cooky cutter!!!

Mispronouncing boolean 30+ times. l33t fails.
Mccay
Great tut tho
I never was a fan of booleans, unfortunately I can't remove menu items from Maya that will serve me no purpose.
