Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection
Diver’s watch with 5-day Spring Drive movement
Featuring the Evolution 9 Style, 200 meters of water resistance, and a blue variation on the “ushio” dial initially seen in 2022 in black, the new Reference SLGA023 is the latest diver’s watch from Grand Seiko. Below its distinctive, patterned dial is the Spring Drive Caliber 9RA5, a next-generation movement with automatic winding, ±10 seconds per month accuracy, and a power reserve of 120, or about five days, when fully wound.
The Evolution 9 Style is a set of original design techniques intended to further pursue usability and beauty in wristwatches and is a development upon the Grand Seiko Style. This sports watch combines these design elements with compliance with ISO standards to satisfy the requirements for a diver’s watch, with increased readability, operability, and robustness.
The coastal waters of Japan are influenced by the flow of the Kuroshio Current, one of the world’s major ocean currents, as well as by the nutrient-rich waters of the Oyashio Current, creating one of the world’s most diverse ocean regions. The dynamic undulation of the waves of these ocean currents is expressed in the powerful dial pattern of this watch, which also uses a unidirectionally rotating bezel with an insert made of ceramic. However, unlike last year’s Spring Drive diver’s watch, which was black, this year the dial and bezel are in Grand Seiko blue.

Wearing my Grand Seiko SLGA023 Ushio now. Really enjoying it. It it is a great, great combination of form and function. It is a very large watch and realistically won’t ‘work’ for someone with a wrist
Wearing my Omega vintage quartz. That is a beautiful GS diver
Thank you for sharing!
Wearing my SLGA019 “Lake Suwa” The third version…🙈🤪 But I truly love it! Got it a few weeks ago and it’s been such a pleasure to own. I love how dynamic the dial is throughout the day.
Thank you for sharing and glad you are loving it! Very dynamic dial indeed.
Thank you! By far you are the best reviewer of watches I have seen! Really hitting it on all point us WIS care, thanks!
My pleasure, and thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate you saying that. I'll keep the detailed videos coming!
I like the review. We’ll done! Very handsome release. GS is on their game!
ooh, I do like that blue!
Great video. Thanks.
Watch free tonight but had my Formex essence for the day.
Thank you for sharing!
It’s amazing and changing the color to that blue makes it much more attractive to me. My only gripe with it is the size. It needs to be 2mm smaller in every dimension
Great review Chris. Love this blue version. I was wearing my OMEGA CK859 but after watching this vid it has inspired me to do an "#AfterHoursWatchSwap" (-; to my SEIKO SNR029. Because it too is titanium and has a spring drive. Chris is the SNR029 built in the same location as the SLGA023, Shinshu or Shizukuishi?
Hi Rey, both are made in the Shizukuishi factory. Great question!
Got to admit, that I much prefer GS in a dressy styling than diver. It’s juxtaposed to what a tool diver should embody. Just my humble observation
SGBA-461 is my everyday.
I would take a grand Seiko over a Rolex anyday GS movements are unbelievable.
I’ve never been at all attracted to GS Divers before, a bit dull compared to the rest of the GS offering and with cases that are either dull or absolutely colossal. These Evo 9 pieces are really getting appealing though, reasonable size, interesting dial texture, aggressive looks. Just a shame the price has gone up as much as it has.
5 days spring drive does that. They are really stepping up the game.. but that does affect the price.
wearing a garmin fenix 6. Beautiful diver. Can this be put on a strap? I could see this on a artem strap.
Thank you for sharing! Yes this can be put on a strap since it has a normal lug design.
Spring Drive indicator is only "printed" and not 3D-engraved!
Why is the self luminous dot on the seconds hand placed like that? Never seen in another manufacturer, probably for good reason.
Its a counterweight. From either end of seconds hand to the center is exactly same amount of "bending" or torque caused by weight of the hand. In other words, Seconds hand is in complete balance at the center point, even lume pip side is significantly shorter than the long end.
Are Stainless steel models different 🤔 ?
Is the SLGA001 available?
Hi EJ, the SLGA001 is long gone at this point. We do have the pre-owned SBGH257 in stock though which is very similar.
How does it compare to SLGA001?
Whats the diameter? If its still 44mm its too big
Still 44, but it doesn't feel big on the wrist.
Fantastic movement, reasonable size. However, the cathedral hour hand kills it for me. That and the lack of more interesting color options. If it was green I could see it as a worth companion to my black Omega PO. Oh, and the power reserve indicator is really nice! Seiko, don't listen to the others, I like it, should stay on the dial.
The hands provide great readability, particularly in combination with the luminance. They made every effort to combine form and function in this watch and it shows. Agree on the power reserve,…it is really nice and adds a lot to a beautiful dial.
Snowflake, because no matter how many watches I own, it is my favorite.
Love to hear that! Thank you for sharing!
SBGH295 Sowa today
Awesome! One of the best pieces still IMO!
Casio square because I am a contractor buy week Rolex sub buy weekend
Wearing an Apple Watch Ultra. I know it won’t be well received here. That’s OK. I wear it because the time is always perfect, it has every complication imaginable, and the combinations of complications can be customized to my liking. It can even function as a dive watch to 131’’. And a dive computer app can be downloaded. Most importantly, the health functions watch for A-fib, tachycardia, and a low blood oxygen level. It’s just perfect for me.
you do you man. i wear a smart watch too. but I will not go to a mechanical watch video and tell the world that I wear an Apple watch.
It's like leaving a comment "I drive a Tesla, it has better horsepower, better technologies, better fuel consumption....etc" in a vintage car video. You're missing the point entirely
@@neoroxx I only mentioned it because he told us to say what watch we were wearing and why….
@@jefferyneu3915 fair enough, my apologies. he did asked what we were wearing
That Apple watch has so much history and character,.enjoy it
4:40 good lord. all that dust on the minute hand. fail for grand seiko. especially at that price.
