I was Recce Tp, 4RTR driving one of the scorpions. I was on the right hand end of the line of Scorp's, about the 4th one in I think. I do remember we snuck out one evening before the parade and painted 'Chinese Eyes' on the WW1 tank, LOL!
I was driving A40 of A Sqn 4 RTR and my commander was 2nd Lt Yori Griffiths on loan from the AAC and this was his last day with 4 RTR so his beret was burned in a wee ceremony at the side of the tank. My loader was Rab Corder and my gunner Pete Feguson This was a great day for all 4 Tank Regiments with a large hoolie that night headlined by Chas n Dave. Great memories Fear Naught..slainte.
I was driving 10 of 9tp Csqn 3RTR, it was a great day, wasn't so keen on scraping the moss out from between all the cobble stones at Barker Barracks with a spoon a few days before though and the terrible hangover the day after ;)
My old man had left 3RTR some 11 years before this before a terminal posting in Hong Kong with the RHKR.. I was there in Sennelager in 1967 (IIRC) when the Queen visited all the five regiments. I recall the first chieftain I ever saw came past at what appeared at a very high rate of knots at the end of all the Cents etc.
if anyone is looking for me, I'm a mile down the road, my job was to open the Queens car door, open the "official" car door, so that she could change cars and "arrive". Job done, said good by to the SAS in the trees, and legged it with my "Royal Pass" to get onto one of the top rows the review stand, while the peasants looked on below me.
Hi Pete, a cracking memory, I was not down the road, I was next to the Queen herself :)) but I was serving her Lunch, I was nabbed to do it, as had just completed my Mess supervisors course in Aldershot, and I am in the video, when they are interviewing the Serving staff, I was the quiet Cpl, next to the loud JOCK :))
