- This video explores upgrading the stock tires on my 2004 4th Gen Toyota 4Runner to 33 inch "pizza cutters". Pizza cutters are simply tires with a somewhat narrower width and are a bit out of fashion with the current popularity of wide all-terrain or mud tires.

I put this same size on my 06 4runner and had heard of no one else running this size. 👊🏼👏 I chose that size because I wanted a true 33 and wanted them to be better in the ice and snow.
Do you guys have a lift to fit this size? Have an 03 SR5 with a front level kit and plan on getting 0mm offset 17x8.5 inch wheels. Really would like to avoid trimming. Thanks

Great video. I'm doing 33 inch pizzas on my 5th generation now.
I got 35 x12.5x17 km2 on my jk. I would not recommend wide tires or mud tires to anyone.
I'm resorting my 89 full size bronco i have owned since i was a teenager in the early 90s and will be getting 35x9.5 ko this time mud tire wears way to fast. And wide tires just suck on so many levels.
1 noise
2 bouncy
3 wear
4. Major loss in horse power
5. Bad shifting (on automatic transmission not mine)
6. Major lose in fuel economy.
7. Unsprung weight
You made the right choices for your vehicle in my very experienced opinion.

I was running 255/85/16 on my Nissan frontier. I really liked that set up. Unfortunately my truck burned to the ground on a fire I was fighting this summer. I upgraded to a Chevy Colorado ZR2 and I just ordered the Wildpeaks in 255/80/17. Thanks for the video, good looking rig!

@@LiftKitCoffee I was bummed, but it was a minor loss compared to the 965,000 acres of forest that burned (Dixie fire). The ZR2 is definitely an upgrade and I'm looking forward to trying the AT3s.

@brianaggson1074 lol well if you keep looking you'll see a bunch more on that damned ZR2 being in the shop for 5 months. The tires were awesome while it ran. The baby Duramax derated coming home from Labor Day weekend. It's still in the shop Jan 10.
Nice, I'm doing an OME install with some leftover spacers from a 5th gen toytec lift. JBA uca's, extended brake lines and new bushings all around. 03 V8 SE it should look very similar.

Nice to see someone else running freedom offroad lift kit! I just installed one on my GX 460. I did a 3 inch lift on both front and rear and it seems like the front sits a little higher.

That looks like a pretty close fit up front, but should be easy to fix. Do a search on fender liner mod. If you need to cut, dremel tool works great.

I haven’t watched you lift install yet, but one of your camera shots here looked like you don’t have a diff drop installed. With around 3” lift, you should consider doing that. Not expensive and easy install. It will help your CV angles and all connected down there in the long run.

I don't have a diff drop. It seems folks are on both sides of the fence about it's benefits to axles and boots but it definitely lowers your front clearance by about an inch. I supposed it comes down to how the vehicle will be used. "Alfred" is for weekend off road fun and not my daily driver so clearance seems more important. But I'm still learning a ton with all of this so I'm holding my opinions loosely.

I like the stance of skinny and tall setup. At least good for gas mileage and has plenty of floatation for sand and beach when deflated.

Getting those Wildpeak 255/80/17 for a 2021 ford ranger with 2.5" leveling kit. There the lightest narrow 33" I can put on my stock 17x8 rim with no spacers or other mods. I like the speed rating too s or r for me everything off road is always Q.
I love mine, and it's nice to look a little different than most rigs.
Ya I like the look too. I don't really like 2" of tire out the sides of trucks. And only 10lb more vs my stock tires. Good on gas for daily and air down for soft beach and dunes 😎👍🏼 15-10psi you can go pretty much anywhere on the beach
Just did this to my 4th gen 4 runner. It’s leveled with Bilstein 5100. I wanted Nokian outpost but they don’t make this size. I just put Nokian on my other big truck. Well,… the Falkens look better and are much quieter than the Nokian. Totally shocked. I removed the front mud flaps and had to adjust the front wheel liner forward which is easy to do. The 4runner looks totally badass now and I look to park next to trucks with those little tires . Haha 😂
Trimming some plastic is much easier than chopping metal IMHO. And I like how the skinnies make it look taller. Welcome to the pizza cutter club. 😄🍕⚙️

Awesome video Chris. I got a the same rig except v6. Planning on getting the same tires on stock rims. How have they held up and did you have to trim the front panel?
Thank you. I think that they have held up quite well in the 4000 miles that I have driven on them and they look great! Of course, where and how your drive will make a difference. And about trimming, I didn’t have to, but I do get a little rubbing at full lock. It doesn’t bother me enough to do something about it. Depending on your alignment and caster angle, you may need to trim a bit but it should be fairly easy to do. Good luck!

Excited to hear how you like the Wildpeaks in 255/80. Seriously considering the pizza cutters for my 5th gen with 3" Ironman lift - the ONLY reasonI am a little hesitant about going that route is the on-road handling with a taller, skinnier tire - particularly if I (or my wife) had to do a high-speed emergency maneuver or something - would that taller sidewall and narrower (but probably a little longer) contact patch make any difference? Mine's still a daily driver, and going to be for a while at least, so I have to take that into consideration when deciding between 285/70's and 255/80's. I do like the weight savings of the 255/80's over comparable 285's too!
Hi Mark. I am liking the Wildpeak pizza cutters but to be honest it's my first lifted vehicle and oversize tire experience. The side view looks great! The front/back view is a little less ominous with the skinnier tire but totally worth it for the ease of install on factory rims and basically no cutting. Though I do have a tiny bit of rubbing at full lock as the video shows. I still haven't bothered to fix that.
If you're going to run a 33" tire the sidewall height will be similar between 255/80 (204mm) and 285/70 (200mm). But you're right the contact patch is less. In straight-line braking it will make a difference to stopping distance. But I think the higher center of mass because of the lift is the most significant factor that you need to account for. Regardless of your tire choice the handling dynamics are going to require a change in driving method. The vehicle is going to be more prone to rollover with sudden inputs at higher speeds. I imagine a rim with offset that creates a wider track stance could help compensate for the higher center of mass. For the 4th Gen that's almost a given if you're going to 285's. Personally, I'm driving more defensively. Other drivers are still going to cut in front of me or hit the brakes suddenly. All I can do is adjust my speed and distance for their shenanigans.
If I'm ever in a position to have a set of aftermarket rims I would set them up with an offset and mud treads and however wide I can go. That way I could keep the pizza cutters for most stuff and swap on the mudders for those "special occasions" :)

Mark, I have this exact tire and size on my Tacoma. I haven't found maneuverability to be an issue in months of on/off road driving. The side wall is pretty stiff as this size tire is only available in an E rating. I run the tire between 30 and 32 psi (street) and it feels/handles very well.
I installed 255/80/17 on my T4R5 as well. Went from 265/70/17 KO2 to this size and model tire. So far it’s been great. Slight rubbing on the driver side front wheel at full lock but it’s barely rubbing. Easily fixed by either trimming the mud flap or if you want a cleaner solution, you can get some rokblokz mudflaps. I have a set of these on order. They’re slightly wider and longer so adds some protection against flying rocks and such into your rocker panels.
Setup specs in my truck for reference:
2” rear lift / 2.25”-2.5” front lift (there’s a slight rake which I want for when I load the back with gear)
Tire pressure @ 39 psi all around
Stock TRD OR rims (didn’t bother changing rims as I actually like these rims but trying to keep it as near stock as I can)
Observations: these tires are very quiet. The KO2’s were as well but these are quieter. I’ve had Cooper AT3’s, KO2, Duratracs and Cooper ST Maxx and these are definitely the quietest. Going from a 31” to a 33”, I haven’t really noticed any power drag on engine performance. Feels about the same and the truck seems to roll quite easily. You feel the height difference but mine are LT and the truck doesn’t feel very tippy at all which I’m guessing the LT stiffness is helping.
Mine is a daily driver as well but if you’re building an overland rig but also using it as a daily driver, I think the 255’s is probably the best compromise. 285’s are quite heavy and you have to cut fenders and possibly do BMC as well which I wasn’t interested in doing plus most 285’s aren’t a true 33” tire.

So, how are you liking the Freedom Off Road lift now that you have driven it for a while? I have a 2007 Sport V6 and I am considering that lift. The height that you said it gave is about what I want for mine. Does it handle well and what about stiffness, especially in the front end?

Hi Sam. I like the FOR lift for the budget-friendly option that it is. The parts are solid and the ride is a bit stiff. But not more than I would expect with my limited experience. Riding on 10-ply 33's with ~2.5" lift in the front is going to transmit quite a bit up to the chassis. Playing with tire pressure can mitigate some of the stiffness. I've been running 40 psi around town, but air down to 25 psi when going off road.
As to handling, I would highly recommend a 4x4 expert alignment after the install. My first alignment at a tire shop made the front wander at the slightest puff of wind. I polled the local forums to find a shop that was everyone's go-to place and was happy with the end result. I've made a couple 500+ mile trips with the tires and lift and was pleased with the ride.

What’s the mpg with the 33” tires?

I've been getting 16-17 according to the onboard computer, but I really need to figure it manually from fill-up to fill-up. I don't think the onboard computer is that accurate and my speedometer is off by ~5 mph now with the 33's. I'd be thrilled if I was still getting 16 since the tires are 52.5 lbs each now.
Beach wheeler here w/ a 1st gen prerunner tacoma looking to go to 285/7017s, I'm wondering if I can avoid 10 ply to save weight, thoughts?
Good question. My understanding is that 10-ply's real application is in situations where you might catch a stick or rock on the sidewall. If you're hanging out on the sand I'd think you'll be fine with C or even SL to save some weight. Heck, you'd probably be fine on 70% of the inland trails as well. You're biggest enemy is sea salt! haha.
Was your rear leveled? I jist installed this same kit with the 2" springs and the passenger side sits about an inch higher. Rear axle is also shifted to the diver side. I do have a pck installed as well.
I think your issue is because of the panhard bar. You can see it running laterally across the rear axle from the top of the passenger side to the bottom of the driver. At just the 2" lift I think your right at the edge of when it starts to affect the things you describe. There's a couple approaches to resolving and (disclaimer) I haven't done either. One is to replace the driver side mounting bracket with an aftermarket that raises the bolt-on position 2 inches. The other is an adjustable panhard bar. You can search around for videos addressing both solutions. If you pull the trigger on one, maybe you'll report back with your experience for anyone else reading here. Hope that is helpful.

Josh, I would recommend getting on the Tacoma forums and checking out what others have done there. A 2" lift would probably be the minimum, but I have no experience there so don't go by that. Maybe someone else reading here would have some recommends for you. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Pizza cutters are great, but it looks too tall IMO Chris. I think 2" would have been better, outside of that it looks good, nice job. Yes, I would like to try your coffee for sure. As an off roader how can I turn down lift kit coffee? Where can I buy it? Your link isn't working.
@Billveder1071, thanks for the input. I don't completely disagree on the total vehicle height. Being a first-timer, I made an educated guess based on forums and videos and went with the 3/2 lift to level it out. On the flip side, if I ever decide to go to 35's I should be ready, except for the BMC and some fender liner trimming. Hopefully the 2UZ V8 will keep me from needing to regear.

I'm probably not the best person to make that judgement since this is my very first set of off-road tires. That said, with the 3/2 lift and these being 10-ply I think the ride is good. I've made a couple 900 mile trips on them and have no complaints.

@Wartable, sorry, nothing to offer there. I'm over by about 4 mph so I just tend to drive around the speed limit. On the interstate I'll use Waze for their speedo feature.

This is a very popular Tacoma upgrade, but I have no experience do it. I can recommend you call a local tire or 4x4 shop, or check out the numerous 4x4 groups on Facebook. These conversations are always being discussed there and on Toyota forums. Hope that helps.
How much power loss?
John, that's a good question. These tires weigh 52.5 lb each which is 17.5 lb more than, say, an average OEM spec all-season tire. So you're adding 70 lbs (possibly 87-ish with a spare) which would naturally translate into some power loss. But honestly the 4.7L has so much torque it's imperceptible to me. The 4.0L specs are not grossly different, but maybe the power loss is more noticeable. If anyone reading this has that setup, jump on with a comment.

Hope your wildpeaks last longer than mine. I bought them because they are supposed to be good in snow. They didn't work nearly as well as the Bfg KO2's I usually run, and wore out in half the amount of time. Never again will I buy tires based on social media hype.

255 pizza cutters better ride better traction better mpg all pros no cons, wider than 255/75 or 80 is just bro factor 😅, its been proven, these tire size footprints actually elongate more than they do wider instead of wider tires which just get wider and don’t cut through as much, longer footprint tracks better like than wider ones😊
Dremel the inside part of the front mudflats that rub, and use a heat gun to “remold” that front fender liner…no need to lose the flaps or cut the liner.
How are your CV angles with the 3” in the front? That would be my only concern. By the way, 255’s will be totally fine on sand as long as you air down to the conditions (soft vs firm sand).
Better in the winter as they cut thru instead of floating
