Ellen White says competitive sports is not from God. Just like the disciples were in competition for which one was going to be greatest in the kingdom of heaven was rebuked by Christ. Competitive sports is not of God. Don't whitewash the subject just because you are guilty of participation in sports competition. The kingdom of God is: he who is least will be greatest; he who saves himself will be lost and he who dies to self will be saved. Many ministers fail to be honest about the subject of competitive sports because they idolize their favorite athlete and themselves and they are guilty of sin because they compromise the truth for selfish pride.

The riches in sport drag many young people away. Not everyone will make it into the top tiers but even in the lower rungs, how many people can earn say £20 or £30, £40, £50k a week? I heard one church accountant say once he would change careers for premier league footballer’s salary for a few years and he would be set for life! Don’t really know how many would disagree when faced with the monetary logic, but isn’t it always better to refer to what Jesus said : better to lose everything and gain heaven, and to the rich young ruler who went away sad when admonished by the Master?

Your right,Sports go right to the bowels of the Roman collision.EGWhite said we are to have nothing to do with this conditioning tool of Satan.Just this week Usain Bolt attended the World Pathfinder jamboree and over 10,000 SDA Pathfinders succumbed to this competitive spirit and were dancing in the streets.

It is important to know the history of sport and infact it started with pagan worship to divert people's mind from God. There are many things that we can do to exercise our body like tilting the land which God himself instructed Adam to do. I would encourage people to listen to Peofessor Walter Veith on sports we will understand it never come from God indeed it is an idolatry.

Praying now for our church and all the people we come in contact with. We need a reform of Sabbath, dress, food, time, before heaven. We do not love eachother and have close relationships as we should. The military have more love for eachother than we do as a church and they do not know Jesus as we claim we do as a church. It is very sad, I pray that God will open the hearts of all of our local and overseas churches, that we can grown in knowing eachother through the word. Amen

Bro. Murry is incorrect with his sport answer, he did not use any bible reference’s, only his own logic. His example that you should not focus so much on religious matters, is not an excuse to play. We all know that things would get competitive on the court. All the people he mentioned like John Lomakain and doctors etc. should not be an example. PAC man and ping ball, it’s all bad and in the wrong environment. It’s a slippery slope. If we have extra time to play games, we have time to go out and help people and express the love of Jesus. Death to self not entertain thyself.

I agree with you. We need to distinguish between recreational & competitive activities. If it’s anything competitive we should be careful because it tends to lead to selfishness and self glory. Galatians 5:20 mentions “selfish ambitions” as something we should not practice if we want to inherit the kingdom of God. Some translations say “rivalries” and one translation calls it “competitive opposition.”

I am flabbergasted became I have always defended my love of sports by saying they are real compared to soaps, etc. Today I am confronted by the uncompromising truth of God- not to watch so much sport, engage in so much discussions about sports….. idolising people ! Temperance in everything! Thank you pastors

What is the counsel of the Word? Love not the world, neither the things of the world, if any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 2 Timothy
Sis.White offers much counsel concerning what our attitude should be regarding competitive sports. She counsels away from it. It has always been a battle for schools, however and for individuals. For schools the questions were: Shall be play competition in school? Shall we play competitive sports with other SDA schools and today: shall we play competitive sports with worldly schools?
Well, as the world of sports has become so glamorized through TV and other media; so lucrative and so popular, it is even more of a question.
We can enjoy hours and hours of watching sports, the same sport or multiple kinds at a time and no one else has to know. The question is: Is this a good use of time? Could I be doing something better with that time?
How is this activity affecting my character development? Is it helping me heavenward or in the opposite direction? How is it affecting my health and peace of mind? A simple game of ball done moderately and in the right spirit may be o.k. but competitive sports have the tendency to be overdone and for many of our youth takes away the desire for useful labor.
How about an hour or two in nature just walking and enjoying sights? Or a picnic in the country? Or time in the garden beautifying it? This certainly is recreation! After such activity, one may feel tired but rejuvenated, and ready to go on with life after a sound period of sleep.
The spirit of worldliness is leavening the Church and is diminishing the love of truth and a desire for spiritual growth and for holiness without which no man shall seel God. Hebrews 12:14..

Congratulations on the message for sports that you have represented. Thank you pastor Stephen Bohr.
I requested you to pray for me in south Sudan
My question is, if you playing in six days and obey God's day. So, is there anything wrong in that?

The Basketball leagues and other sports leagues that we have/had throughout the various churches and institutions are not of God. Friendly ball playing and sports for recreation are different than competitive sports. I used to participate in those leagues in NYC and I saw the really bad results of the competitive sports leagues. It is very difficult to be Christlike while trying to dominate another team or person.

I believe also that you can tell when a pastor is not spending time with the LORD; so the blame of others playing with entertainment and not paying attention in church is not 💯 percent true, the pastors are at the pulpit preaching without the HolySpirit and the church can tell where there is no life.

Its very amazing that a simple question as this is so difficult for us, and why is it so? Cause of our lack of understanding the everlasting gospel, God sees the end from the begining isa46;8,9.with 1jn4:8,18. Perfect love casteth out fear.

When I was growing up, our schools did not participate in competitive sports. Now they do, from elementary level to university level. Some of our universities even went so far as to recruit soccer players from South America, who were not even Adventist, to fluff out their soccer team. Not good.

All this is happening because as a church we have wondered far from God, so now we are even competing with the world. The enemy is real and the church is asleep.

Even in the "allotted" time to exercise in the form of sport in a "competitive" way, still, I believe not right because it encourages pride in the winning team and despondency and helplessness on the losing team thus it challenges them to spend more time in training to win the next time thus taking away time to study the Word of God to be trained by Him to Win souls for the Kingdom.

How much time is spent by intelligent human beings in horse racing, cricket matches, and ball playing! But will indulgence in these sports give men a desire to know truth and righteousness? Will it keep God in their thoughts? Will it lead them to inquire, How is it with my soul? CT 456.1

This one concerning sport you ll have to answer it again but forget about polical correctness because in time like this we as Christians cannot be busy with sports? don't you realize that sport is now a religion, let's live in the world but not to be of the world, tell us to have some exercises yes because we are going to benefit

Satan has devised a multitude of ways in which to keep men from serving God. He has invented sports and games, into which men enter with such intensity that one would suppose a crown of life was to reward the winner. RH September 10, 1901, par. 5
