@@KaveManAquatics thank u I’ll check it out keep up the Great work I love that you teach in detail so people can understand what to do that’s what I aim for on my channel teaching in detail God bless
I would put the filter into a empty Home Depot orange bucket. It helps with the transport of the filter from under a tank to your cleaning area. The use of the orange and not blue bucket is because it’s easy to see if you have a leak on the filter. Plus you should notice a low tank water before the bucket overflows.
I have a similar set up only difference being a course, medium and fine sponge in the bottom tray. The way that your course sponges quickly found their shape after cleaning indicates that they were quite clean anyway. The other sponges (blue and clear ones) were exceptionally clean for the time that you left them. Definitely another 2 weeks left in those before a clean. Without doubt crystal clean instructions and advice Kev. You are an exceptional ambassador for the hobby for those new to the hobby and those with a little bit of experience. You smash it on all your uploads.💪
First of all, Semper Fi KaveMan. Thank you for your sevice! (I'm assuming that's you on the wall in the background.) Love your vids, especially on the Fluval 07 series canister filter. Great job explaining exactly how and why you do things, and a bit about how water circulates through the system. Knowing how water passes through a 07 adds clarity to the reason you stack your trays the way you do.
Wow!! Thank you!! I have to do this for the first time and it’s stressing me out, hopefully Saturday. Question, can I add something in the baskets to deal with brown algae?
That’s what I like about him and his channel so much. Most channels just talk about what you should do, etc. Kev goes into demonstrations which is good for me, because I am a very visual learner. Plus, sometimes the directions that come with some of these canisters are like trying to decode a language you’ve never seen before. 🤣
Just got my first 07 series filter for tank # 2 and boom, ended up looking to KaveMan for advice once again! Haha The only suggestion I might have to a newbie would be to always prime the filter with the plunger with tank water as opposed to filling it with tap water & products. Because this way you have LESS chance of having bio dieoff (say 25% chlorinated water if you did a 25% water change) versus putting 100% chlorinated water in the filter with products that hopefully work quick enough. Once again, you da man! *fist bump*
Excellent videos! Love the tip on getting the top off. Have an 07 for about a year now and kept using a butter knife to pry the top off. Never would of thought of pushing down on the handles, walla, works like a charm , thank you, kave man!
Kevin...the plastic ball stuff for bio is really highly inefficient and takes up space better served with ceramic or sintered glass. Even the ceramic rings are superior or the scrubbies due to surface area. I use Marine Pure spheres I purchased 3 years ago and they have very little ware. I discovered that using finer sponge covers the fine particle filtering, is durable, saves waste and ultimately money. Having to throw out any filter material waste puts a load on our environment. Thank you for reminding me how good ChemiPure Blue is. I just maintenance my 407 and added the ChemiBlue with outstanding results in my 120g visible overnight.
Very good instructional video on cleaning 407, one thing I added which you probably use is a pre-filter sponge, which I clean weekly. Amazing how much crap it stops from going into my filter, and extending the time between canister cleanings.
I really dont ever clean my hoses. Even when they do get gunked up and spit debris out, the filter quickly sucks it back up again. if you have excess gunk build up you may be overfeeding. Try reducing your feeding and/or closing your filter intake during feedings 😁
Aye yo KaveMan, just wanted to say thank you for your service and thanks for the videos. I can tell you put a lot of effort into them. I have a couple red eared sliders and I upgraded to the 407 but I've been intimidated by the canister and haven't cleaned their tank in an amount of time that's embarrassing to say! At any rate, thanks for making it look easy and showing us the way!
Thanks Kev! You are really excellent at explaining and demonstrating anything. My preference would be to put tank water back into the filter and replace the missing tank water with the dechlorinated water.
Have you had any leaks with your 407? Btw love your vids and tanks my kid got me into the hobby (and bailed on me) would love some cichlids in the future, not yet though.
kev, in one of the vids , for the canister , u have the trays set up differently starting with bottom tray of sponges, bio , bio matrix & then last with purigen & polyfil , but this one u have poly fil on the 2nd from the bottom tray ,,, which is better ?
Grat question! In the older video I added purigen to the top tray. Its a good idea to wrap the purigen in poly fil so that water is forced to go through the purigen and not around it. In this video, since I didnt add any chemical media I only used the poly fil in second tray from the bottom as thats the best spot to mechanically filter the water just before it hits your bio media. If you wanted to add purigen in top tray you could still wrap it in polyfil as well.
Great vids! I’ve learnt a lot from you. I have the 307 which only has the 3 chambers for media. Where would you put the poly fil in a 307? The top chemical tray has the most space, where as the other two trays are already full?
Thanks for the reply Kev. I have less than an inch space in bottom tray as there are poly pads on top of black sponge. Could I pack some around purigen in top tray as an alternative?
Love the videos by the way. My 407 is about a year old. When do I or do I need change the filters? I do know that you can only change one section at a time. Fluval says change every 6 months.
Love these videos really helped me out a lot ur my go to guy when I need help just wanted to say thanks a lot U may have it on another video I just wish u showed how to turn the filter back on cause I just did a big job on cleaning the substrate and just was adding new polyfil to my canister 407 and idk which is the right to start it back up but all the gunk just blew right back in the tank from the hoses as I was pumping it to start the filter 😏😩
Gunk blowing back in could be caused by over feeding. Food is getting sucked into your intake and then it gets stuck in your hoses. You didnt start it up wrong, thats just what happens if hoses are clogged. Check out this playlist with a few great videos on your filter - ua-cam.com/play/PLP5OXTIIDO8PRpx-RbKsLopU54H_0JImN.html
@@KaveManAquatics just now seeing rhis lol thank u so much i probably am overfeedin their big fish so i worry i dont feed them enough but lately been feedimg around 3 times a day
Hi! Thanks for the video is very useful for me. I see in the first minute at 0:54 water spilling from the union of the motor head and the body. That's happening to me as week in my 207. I was worried the oring was not sealing... Is this normal???? Thanks again for all of your time and help.
Very good video. I can see you are good at what you do. Also the way you explain is perfect.I’ve watched so many in last few weeks and by far yours are the best keep up good work. the more I watch the more I want to get in to it like you said in past vids get the biggest tank as you will want bigger. So I’m going fore the juwel rio 450. And upgrade the filter to fluval canister filter 407. Would you say this is the best way.
I appreciate that! Glad you're finding the channel helpful. Yea that combo sounds great! Just remember your filtration always depends on the type, size, and amount of fish 😊
Honestly, hardly ever! But I know the 407 series tends to clog up more than my FX series filters. If you're finding they spit out a lot of gunk try closing your valves before feedings. You may be getting a lot of food sucked up into them....JUST DONT FORGET TO OPEN THEM BACK UP AFTER FEEDING 😊
thanks bro for the video! I have a 407 model for a 40 gallon aquarium! tell me when you need to clean the filter for the first time? in 3 months or maybe in 8?
Boricua thank you brother love watching your videos. I have a 407 also thank you for the tips. I have a 55 gallon tank. Looking to upgrade to a 90 gallon tank.
On my 75 I was running an FX4, and two AC110s HOB filters. Decided to ditch the HOB filters and replace with a 407. Well took the media out of the HOBs and put in 407, but couldn’t do nothing with the big sponges that were in the HOBs… ammonia spike today.. guessing that’s what caused it.
Very possible, those sponges were carrying a lot of beneficial bacteria. Dose with prime and stability for the next few days and you'll get that spike under control while keeping the water safe.
@@KaveManAquatics yea buddy, I’m on it. Changed about 50% of the water out and started the dosing of those two.. thought I could slide by just with the media and not be affected by the sponges.. WRONG. Anyway, those Seachem alert things you hang in the tank is what saved me. Got one for ammonia and PH.
Hi, cool video! I'm pretty new in the hobby and need some advices! I recently bought a 307 for my 65g tank, tho I'm keeping only 3 fishes, i feel the area for the bio media is not quite big enough. I just installed a pre filter sponge on the intake strainer, my qns is can i skip the blue and white pre filter sponge in the cannister and remove them all together to make more space for more bio media? As all debris and poops are stuck in the pre filter sponge on the strainer, i feel that the 2 large pre filter in the cannister is not that necessary anymore. I might just throw 3 bags of 1kg each of bio media into the pre filter area in the cannister. What do you think or suggest? Thank and regards!
Do you know if the 407 hose brackets/clamps will fit on the back of a 180 gallon tank? Or are the brackets too small? I would be using it as a supplemental filter.....not the primary.
I know this is a older video. But I am starting a new 125 gallon african peacock cichlids tank. Question is I know your supposed to start with overstockingthe fish if I put I'm 20 new cichlids how will I combat the spike in the system after adding the fish
Prime and stability will keep the increased bio-load in check until your Beneficial Bacteria catch up. This video is on ammonia spike but its the same tactic - ua-cam.com/video/gt6bP4_p7iA/v-deo.html
Great video! One question, when rinsing out the sponge filter and media, can you use tap water that was treated with prime instead of tank water? I think tap water would be cleaner.
Theoretically you can, because you're using dechlorinated tap water, I get it. But you have to keep in mind. If that tap water's PH or temperature is too far off from the tank's water, you may still shock and kill off some beneficial bacteria. On the other hand, if your tank is mature and established, the small amount you may kill off will be insignificant 😊
I am awaiting for my fuval to arrive. I currently have a HOB running at the moment. Should I run them both at the same time to get bacteria within the fuval filter. I also have a sponge filter running as well. Am I thinking correctly? Any suggestions?
hey Kevin could u tell me where u order your fish from please lost all my african cichlids in my 75 and would like to order some peacock and hats gotta star over
Sure, you can always add more media. I dont recommend the bio-balls in a canister though. It's just what I had available at the time. Go with Seachem Matrix or if you wanted to save you could also use Pot Scrubbers! Watch this - ua-cam.com/video/WlKVa0qzjwg/v-deo.html
Awesome video, thanks! How do you make your fish food cocktail for the week? I want to meal prep for my fish for a week when I am going out of town. Do you keep it in the fridge?

@@KaveManAquatics i’ll be sure to watch ;) Is there a specific reason u decided to use canisters instead of sumps for your tanks though?
Your the man..😊
Thank you bro! 😁💪
I do not have bio balls. What can I put on top Of canister.
How often do you clean hoses and connector of hoses that attatch to rim of tank ??
Honestly, hardly ever! But I know the 407 series tends to clog up more than my FX series filters. If you're finding they spit out a lot of gunk try closing your valves before feedings. You may be getting a lot of food sucked up into them....JUST DONT FORGET TO OPEN THEM BACK UP AFTER FEEDING 😊
Hey just binging all your videos; the poly fills in the other videos you put on the top any reason?
Different filters push water in different directions. The order of your media, including poly-fil depends on the direction of the water flow.
Do I have to put like lubricant like Vaseline on the orings?. I though I saw someone had mentioned the awhile ago. TIA
Some people do, but I've never done it and never had a problem.
thanks bro for the video! I have a 407 model for a 40 gallon aquarium! tell me when you need to clean the filter for the first time? in 3 months or maybe in 8?
Depends on your bio-load and other maintenance practices. Watch this video, it'll be very helpful! - ua-cam.com/video/Mz6CL14xGu0/v-deo.html
Boricua thank you brother love watching your videos. I have a 407 also thank you for the tips. I have a 55 gallon tank. Looking to upgrade to a 90 gallon tank.
That's awesome! Glad you're enjoying the channel! 😊💪
Can you run two 407's on a 120 gallon tank or would it better to run one FX 6 ? I plan on making it a big tiger barb tank.
2 407's would be fine with tiger barbs, but yes 1 fx6 would be better 😊
@@KaveManAquatics Bro thank you for your service and thank you for the advice, I greatly appreciate it !
Is the 407 ok for a 180 litre aquarium?
If I put chemi pure blue in the last one how often should I replace it?
Do you know if the 407 hose brackets/clamps will fit on the back of a 180 gallon tank? Or are the brackets too small? I would be using it as a supplemental filter.....not the primary.
Not at all. It will definitely fit, no problem.
Very informative video, thank you.
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
I have a question 407 canister filter for 55 gallón tank is to big?
Haha hey fam let that guy know when he comes back over he did a great job on the video im always learning something new
Thank you bro! I'll def let him know! 🤣
Just found you today. Love your videos.
Welcome!! Glad you're enjoying the channel!
Wow I have the same filter and mine never looks that clean after 2 weeks of using it :)
Does the polishing pad and poly-fil essentially do the same function?
Essentially, yes.
I'm using my 405 as a polisher
Nice!
Yes sir! You are thinking absolutely correct! 😊 Give it about 1-2 weeks and you can remove the HOB...if you want to.
Just got mine for black fri. ❤️
Nice!! 😁
Hey Kev! Awesome video man! I just wanted to ask. Does the polyfil get swapped out with each cleaning or just until it gets really dirty?
hey Kevin could u tell me where u order your fish from please lost all my african cichlids in my 75 and would like to order some peacock and hats gotta star over

"What did you do today?"
"I watched a guy, on the internet, wash his balls in used poop-filled fish tank water."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can Bio balls be added after the filter has been running for 2 week? Note this is a new setup 75 G with 6 medium Peacocks .
Can you do a top 10 fish for beginners salt water.. I have a 75 gallon tank everything set up
Don’t keep salt water, sorry bro
Awesome video, thanks! How do you make your fish food cocktail for the week? I want to meal prep for my fish for a week when I am going out of town. Do you keep it in the fridge?
If I make it for the whole week yes, I keep it in the fridge. No more than 1 week in the fridge though or the supplements lose their nutrients.
So will poly fill take out the nutrients I feed my plants? I'm getting conflicting answers. I'm about to upgrade to a canister and I'm curious.
No It wont. Poly fil is mechanical media that will trap physical particles of detritus.
@@KaveManAquatics thank you for the quick response 🤙That's what I thought but saw so much conflicting info.
