  • in todays video I anted to give you an update on how it has been since I quit striving for extreme minimalism. I still very much plan to be intentional when it comes to purchasing and bringing new things into my life but now I am looking for a balance with minimalism and accepting the changing nature of life.

"Having control is an illusion in general" This is SO TRUE. I think more than minimalism, mindfulness and intentionalism is the best way. With mindfulness we wont acquire clutter.

This is definitely what I am trying to do with my decluttering. I’ve found using the physical space I have is a good limit, using rule of if I love it, I use it and the number isn’t causing me stress.

I went through this transition in the last two years, I went from extreme minimalism to having two babies and being a stay at home mom. For me to be my happiest I require more things and that’s okay, I still follow my principle of having only what we need and use and that’s just a lot more these days. But I don’t obsess over having less all the time anymore and that is a relief for me! Love the outlook!

I think if we are not careful we can treat minimalism like a religion. we can worship it. I have to say each method i have tried over the years have had there pro.s and con,s, so it is a learning curve. I can relate to the obsessive nature of minimalism but life it just too short, contentment is a wonderful thing i want to embrace, and things are here for us to enjoy and bless us, not control us either too little or too much, and constantly assessing is too much. I think of my mum, she would deep spring clean and winter clean maybe twice a year, that enabled her to pass things on, and use up what she needed and to keep the mess under control, from now on i will be doing the same. Ithank you for sharing.

Perfect words! I am not a minimalist and for now, I don’t feel like becoming one. However, everything you said should be in peoples mind. As long as we make use of everything we have, buy with responsibility and it doesn’t become a “weight” in our life’s, that is perfectly ok. We just can’t become “slaves” of our things.

To me, minimalism isn’t just about owning very little, but it’s about owning only what you use and need and what makes you happy. That could be 20 things or 100 things. It’s different for everyone. Minimalism isn’t a static state of being, it’s conditional based on each person's needs and is constantly evolving.

I believe that the idea of extreme minimalism is very seductive for some people. The urge to test oneself, to see just how few possessions one really needs, is at once a physical, mental and emotional exercise in self-knowledge. It’s fun to challenge ourselves, to question everything. However, as a lifestyle, extreme minimalism may only be practical if you happen to be a monk in a Zen monastery where your life is reduced to prayer, meditation, and simple chores. For those of us who are householders with homes, jobs, families and the need to go out in the world, our lives require many, many more possessions than a Zen monk requires.
For me, my level of minimalism is like the swing of a pendulum. I go toward “extreme,” get bored with it, acquire a few more things and try it out. At some level, if I start to feel overwhelmed, I cut back until I feel bored again. The pendulum then is always swinging between boredom and overwhelm. Some say Essentialism is the word to describe the balance. Some call it a Mindful Lifestyle. Whatever your level of minimalism it is soooo much better than the mindless consumerism I see in so many homes.
Good content video. Thanks for your words of wisdom.

I think this is great, I understand what you’re saying. I think it’s all about what we’re trying to achieve with minimalism - not just for its own sake, but to create space for the things we want to do, free time, financial or eco goals, or the freedom to pick up and move at any time. Ideally I think we stop counting/organizing/worrying about the stuff because we too busy living the good life we are making space for.

I love how intentional and self aware you are, and how you accept that change is inevitable and are fluid with your needs for what ever season you are in. Much love from Canada.

I think there is a huge difference in having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear vs pairing down to essentials then adding things to enhance your life and enjoying them. The big difference there is mindfulness. My husband has a lot of clothes and i have just a few basic items. I finally realized i dont have any nice occasion shirts. It would be nice to have a bit more elevated wardrobe as i have only your basic tshirts, long sleeve, tank tops. But it would be nice to have a few options or something nice to wear for family dinners. It is okay to make mistakes if we make an effort to notice patterns and do our best to correct things. For example i will do so good on not buying anything then i will get in a shopping mood and buy multiple things. I see that my purchases were not always necessary nor do they necesarily add as much value or happiness as i thought they would.

A lovely summary... I definitely think that minimalism and extreme minimalism can become obsessive and you wind up thinking about stuff just as much as consumers - only it’s about what can I reduce? Rather than what can I buy? So finding that balance is important (and one I’m still trying to find)

I moved out of my childhood home a year ago. I almost never bought stuff for myself when I lived there bc I felt I was being "judged" for spending money on things I just want and dont need. So the last year I went ging between trying to declutter everything and being a minimalist and buying EVERYTHING I wanted. (So bad I Know, I am glad At least I bought almost everything second hand)
Now I want to stop buying things and start decluttering but in a sustainable way... has anyone ever experienced this? Has anyone advice?

    • @avp6730
      @avp6730 Рік тому

I know what you mean! I grew up in a home without very defined bounderies so having things that were my own and nobody could take them was superimportant. Also we didn’t have much money for things so when I got my own money I wanted to buy stuff - sometimes just to feel that I can (as in if I want something I can get it without that weird feeling of « wanting what you can’t have ») Unfortunately, I don’t have any good advice because I haven’t managed to find a balance between these impulses and the desire to have a neat home and be flexible and mobile.

I believe that we need to make decisions, focus on what decision was made and follow through with it, even if it is for just a little while. It doesn't mean that it will be forever. But it means that we have figured out things about ourselves and learn from it. You have done this and now you are taking another look at your needs, priorities and wants. This means growth. Good job.

What a lovely video, Lia! I totally got what you were saying and agree. This transition into "intentional" from "extreme" minimalism approach is a very cool one. It's more of an open approach to yourself and life, where the extreme approach was more of a challenge, "work," and practice, which was also cool because you could investigate your parameters, wellbeing, and personal attachments around stuff. It's been a similar experience and journey that I've been on for awhile and so have enjoyed seeing your way through it. :) Greetings from California, USA!

I came across your channel because I've been interested in the tiny home movement for some time and minimalism definitely goes hand-n-hand with living tiny...I most definitely am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination 🤣 because I enjoy a cozy home surrounded by warm textures and textiles; and all things that bring me joy. However, over the past few years, I have become more mindful of what I actually purchase...I like just using and taking the best care of the things I currently own...I purchase consumables, of course, and do replace well loved items that I use but they've worn out or stopped working all together...I no longer enjoy adding things just to say that I own it because it only adds to my overall collection of possessions, and will most likely rarely get used...So, while I am not a minimalist, I do appreciate the sentiments of this video.

I can totally understand to own more sweaters. I had a minimalist winter wardrobe by "accident" this year: I don't like shopping for winter clothes, so I only had one chunky sweater, one light sweater and a cardigan that I wore most of the time and I could not stand them anymore in the end. I bought two sweaters a few weeks ago, to finally spice up my wardrobe again. It worked, but it was not enjoyable.

I agree with your position on minimalism. I now like the word Essentialism!
I come from Ireland but have had alot of contact with Europeans. I have found that they like to challenge themselves aggressively to need less, use less, ear less... I wondered if it came from the privations of WW2?
The over-strictness regarding "stuff" is a type of legalism...
I try to move items on to others if I have spares. Apart from that... it's Essentoalism for me... and the warmth of Chrustianity.

I am originally from Switzerland so I grew up speaking Swiss German (which is considered a German dialect but it sounds very different in my opinion and has a lot of different words and Germans often don't understand it right away without practicing). So I think my accent isn't the typical German accent... Apart from German (and Swiss German) and English I also learned French, Swedish, and a bit of various other languages but I am only fluent in speaking (Swiss)German and English and I can read books in Swedish ☺ But I hope I'll be at least somewhat fluent in many more languages in the future because I love understanding how people express, see and feel different in different languages (apart from being able to communicate with more people while traveling)
