Just an fyi and Im not trying to troll you. Those wind braces are actually called collar ties and they and an important part of the roof framing structure. Nice job on the install. Ive been enjoying your videos for quite a while and learn a bunch from you. Thanks for posting.
Not in your trade. I'm a carpenter -remodeler. I'm really taken in by the HVAC vids, problem solving and getting a reasonable fix. What do you do with all the old units you get during the year ?
I save it for when scrap prices go up. Then I give it to my helper for Christmas bonus. Believe me, it adds up fast, hot water tanks, boilers, even old cast poop pipe ( I do plumbing as well), separate the dissimilar metals, and you get more
Out here on the West Coast, I don't think they even sell 80% Furnaces? Also, Furnaces here are almost always in the garage. Never seen one in an attic. Funny, the 92% Furnace we had installed in 2003, the Tech set it up and then came back with automotive wax and waxed the new Furnace's cabinet. It still looks good today. Hopefully it will keep running. It's a Comfort-Aire, made in the midewest with dual stainless steel heat exchangers. It's the 34" stubby cabinet, downflow. Geez, it's about 18 years old now. Ted, the install looks great. Must be a bitch to get the equipment moved into and out of the Attic.
Great videos. I have a question. I run my ac 74 degrees no problem. Turn it down to like 73 or 72 and it freezes. The condensate drain pipe is clear. Ac company only puts tablets in never actually cleaned the condenser inside.
(I came up framing) Those braces are collar ties, they’re there on purpose. Keep the roof from spreading, I wouldn’t cut any of them out. Edit: I thought this video was new, 2 years later this comment is worthless
those must be good systems. someone in my neighborhood in a really big house has one of those little round condensers and it looks really really old! still works fine though and they never seem to get any service.
I worked in HVAC back in the 80’s and most furnaces were horizontal in the attic. I never saw a vertical furnace in the attic in Texas until I bought a new house in the 90’s. Most of my neighbors have vertical furnaces in the attic. For some reason, my furnace is mounted vertically in a tiny closet.
At 0:18 I really hope something like that was documented and taken care of. Faced one to many customers where something like that was never documented and mentioned to the customer. Also, isn't that filter dryer supposed to be closer to the evaporator?
@@TedCookHVAC Its the missing floorboards around that vent. Some of my coworkers have had there toolbags fall straight through ceiling because there was nothing there to stop it. If it wasn't documented, someone was paying for it.
I'm new to the field, fresh out of college, love watching your videos. But is there a reason why you call them comfortakers? I have one myself and have worked great for the last 10yrs.
I have a 23 year old comfortmaker like in this video and have never had to do any service. Very reliable. Idk about the new ones though. These were made by ICP in Tennessee .
They are a subsidiary of Carrier and virtually identical units minus a few bells and whistles. Very good units. Not to say Trane is not better, but the margin is not near as great as most would have you believe.
@@TransDerwinOverdrive $1000 vs. 5 grand for a new system? (And that "expensive" compressor is another function of the screwing we're getting from the EPA and its "ozone depletion" quackery.)
It does not have to be at the evap. I have never heard that before. I have seen it done on some larger commercial installs, but almost always is at the condenser. Remember, some manufacturers put the drier in the condenser.
@@TedCookHVAC Your video was great, but this comment really wasn't necessary was it? I get you're a Trane dealer, but there is nothing wrong with ComfortMaker for those on a tighter budget. No need to bad mouth the competition when Trane speaks for itself. :)
I would've run a whole new copper lineset with a brand new system. All those years of R22 running through the old lineset isn't good for a brand new unit, no matter much you try to purge it and vaccum it. And lets not forget the filter dryer placement on the liquid line. I've done some research and I think the filter dryer should be closer to the evaporator coil rather than outside with the condenser.
I am really impressed by your work ethics, deep insight and commitment to seeing the work completely through!
Look at you shining the unit up 👌. This man cares about his units.

Good info, thank you !!
Those older Arcoaire units that style with the 2 blade condenser fan motor were very quiet while running. IMO. Thanks for the video.
Those people need to insulate attic. Nice installation ,Ted.
That attic is over the garage.... that is why you see no insulation.
A man who cares about his work. Love it.

I give all the scrap away... no use for it or time to process it.

I think when you cussed the tennis racket stringer it was the first time I heard you cuss on all your videos lol
Why is the humidity so high? I try to go for 45% humidity, 350 cfm per ton in the Houston area due to it being so humid much of the year.
The air had been off all day for the install to be done. It had not been running long when the video was made.

Hey Ted I watch a lot of your videos and I was wondering how many Nordyne/Nortek systems have you ended up changing out

27 years and counting with my 2.5 ton Comfortmaker. Still running a 20 degree delta T. Has not needed even a cap changed on it since install in 1993.
I have a 1987 Comfortmaker heat pump that's till doing well.

Looking for a new set of gauges, temp probes, and air temp probes, any suggestions. Must have a good warranty and service rep?
I like Fieldpiece SMAN360 and SMAN460.
I literally have the exact same unit. Same year and everything. I’m sure it’s on borrowed time.
Why is it assumed that the whole unit has to be changed?
Can't the failed parts just be replaced?
hg2 certain parts would make it cost prohibitive to fix, like the compressor.

Indeed, I haven't.
Filter drier should be right before the evap, not right after the condenser..
They are fine with me mounted outside.
I've never seen drier by the evap, it is always right by the condenser, but then again I'm new to the field.

Who told you that?
Were able to change the line set or did just flush them?
We always solvent flush the lines from attic jobs... we replace the ones in crawl spaces.
The condenser unit appears to be directly in front of the disconnect. Any inspector worth his salt would call that.
?
What's wrong with that?
What was wrong with the old system that it needed a total change out?
It was junk.

@sman7290 Nothing wrong with reusing a line set if it is in good condition. We do it all the time. Professionals know when to replace and when not to.
