Angel was clearly aware of his unjust rejection, as he said ‘You were more sinned against than sinning, that I admit.’ But this kind of rejections happen across culture, even still happening nowadays. Angel is merely an unlucky guy who is put on the spot
FFMC was my first Hardy back in 2014 and it made me completely fall in love with his writing and it does end happier than Tess so I very highly recommend it! I just finished Tess for the first time but I had seen the miniseries beforehand which I think made the depressing stuff easier to deal with and I loved it. My next Hardy will probably be Return of the Native which has a fantastic audio narration by the wonderful Alan Rickman (RIP :_().

I enjoyed Tess, and also the Mayor of Casterbridge. Tess's tragedy is brought about by others, while the Mayor actively destroys himself.
Buzz Selous I still haven't read Mayor of Casterbridge but I've been meaning to for absolutely years! I really look forward to reading more Hardy
